Pic related is a good starting point but there are hundreds, maybe thousands of quality DOS games out there.

Depends also in which timeframe you're interested, DOS had a pretty long lifespan from the early 80's to 1994, while games for DOS were released well into 1997. There are very lightweight games that are also very rudimentary such as Paratrooper, Pacman, Tetris, Castle Wolfenstein etc. to heavier full 3D games such as Quake, Tomb Raider, MechWarrior 2 etc. Check out the other DOS thread too: >>6541856

>using DOSbox
Literally why. Nowadays you actually have a choice with games like Blood. People only used it because they had no other choice before.

Crime Wave is the most important DOS game.

Because it Just Works™ for the vast majority of DOS games if you want to be able to just play games without either tweaking your compatibility settings or installing dozens of bloated source ports for everything.

I could never get into dos games other than HoMM games and FPS, something about the aesthetic ruins it for me. The games lacked the polish of gen 4-5 consoles.

I highly recommend Crusader: No Remorse, and its sequel No Regret. Both are isometric action shooters with destructible environments and a variety of different weapons that have some really unique effects, like a Nitrogen gun that freezes enemies into shatterable statues of ice, or an Ultraviolet plasma cannon that skeletonizes anything it hits. On top of that, it has full motion videos with actors to move the story along, and it plays like good late 80's action sci-fi cheese. The controls take some getting used to, and some of the stages are overlong, but you'll find a solid entertainment package here if you're willing to stick it out.
