Yes we can. You get a character and what do you do if you want a new skill on most of them? You grind away to get new spells or "psi-powers". The customization came down to equipping items to your characters and giving them restorative items. You never got the feeling you are crafting your characters, they were just pre-set.

What a dull game.

>> No.656437

Well this thread was made to be a troll thread but ok.

I have no problems with the combat/leveling. Sure, compared to other rpgs its kinda bland, but what other rpg lets you whack a new age retro hippie with a frying pan?

Plus there is way more to this game than combat. The colorful soundtrack, engaging story, etc.

Its a great game. The people who bash it probably didnt make it past twosome or never played it in the first place

>> No.656439

What's with Earthbound and having 3 or 4 threads open at a single time every day?
It's even worse than Final Fantasy threads. I like the game, but is it that hard to only have one at a time?

It's definitely the best written and most original rpg of the 16-bit era as well.

But almost none of its game mechanics are original and interesting. You have rolling HP which doesn't have too much of an impact until late mid game and enemies running away from you, and that is very negligible.

I don't know how anyone could be this delusional. It's not original in terms of battle mechanics because it is a straight up copy of Dragon Quest. The rolling HP counter is a minor innovation at best, and it actually makes the game easy mode because characters can heal themselves before they even die.

It's not even original in terms of setting because it's a sequel to Mother, but nobody seems to care about that. I mean, even the main characters look nearly identical. I don't know how you can say that's original.

What makes a game a game is the sum of all its parts.
If I like it, I like it. I'm not going to deny my own opinion just because it's apparently not as much of a game as others. If it was just gameplay, I would be bored with it, and hell, most JRPGs in general. But it has a story, setting, characters, sound, and style that really entice me.

I'm not talking about gameplay originality...although it's all kind of the same turn based shit back in the 16-bit era. Earthbound's battle mechanics are similar enough to final fantasy or chrono triggers that it's such a trifling point that there's no reason to even discuss it.

It's not better than secret of evermore, mana, breath of fire, or any of that.

It's one of the few 16-bit games that made the case for games as art and can be discussed on a deeper level than any other 16-bit rpg. Granted, not by much, but it still can. That's why it has a leg up.

I'm off to bed, so you guys can keep arguing and telling me I'm wrong because your cliche jap-rpg BoF, CT, FFIV/FFVI, Tales of fagtasisa, etc. are better. They're not bad games, but earthbound has clearly made the most artistic and literary of them.

>> No.656647

Where does the 3 is better than the 6? It didn't have any story, it's almost only based on grinding and finding dungeon. 4 is where the DQ are beginning to be interesting, but except for the chapter system it doesn't have any interesting features... 6 had a story, cool character, a big overworld... 7 and 8 doesn't count there are not the same generation (though i agree they're a lot better than the 6)

What exactly isn't comprehended? Perhaps you didn't understand me: Picking at a possible incorrect minority (the three in question still being about as good as EB if not better) as an effort to dodge a substantial argument against you (or in the case you aren't that poster, him) is a shallow tactic in debate. Perhaps you (or he) would have been better served in actually debating rather than trying to steer the topic onto a tangent.

Can we talk about how resellers (and idiot 'collectors' who bow to their prices) can go die?

>> No.661739

So way back when I was around 8 years old we walked into BESTBUY to shop around and work off dinner. I ran to the game section to look at CHRONO TRIGGER AND SUPER MARIO RPG. Man was I pumped about them when I saw them in Nintendo power the past few months getting rave reviews. Well I never got games except for holidays and since we just got outta school for the summer I really wanted something to just sit and play all day! I begged and pleaded to get either of these games and to no success they declined my every wish and beg. I don't blame em they were about 60 70 bucks, but hey! after getting defeated I saw at least 40 copies of Earthbound sitting on display for 5 dollars each. I asked if I could get this game since hey, 5 dollars, that's even cheaper than used Blockbuster games. They said yes. I was very interested in why the box was so big! Then when I opened it up in the car, I saw it had the strategy guide in it! I quickly flipped through it to see what the game was and saw all the different zones and monsters, I found the scratch and sniffs in the back and thought man how weird!

By the time I got home I was pumped as hell. I ran downstairs and quickly put the game in and was blown away from what was actually pretty creepy. Aliens invading earth?? But I'm a boy in a robot! I don't think I even realized you never actually get into a Starman, but after talking with the cops and going back home to my mom and then being woken up again to head back to the meteorite, finding buzzbuzz! holy crapz.

It was a fantastic opening to what would be one of the greatest summers of my life.
