How do you sell a game like quake to someone who's never played a FPS before?

The castles you traverse have a very OOT Dungeon feel to them with its clever design. Lots of cool bonus secrets where you shoot a button on a ceiling or use teleporters. Its early low poly 3D but its made by a bunch of talented FPS designers in their prime. The Expansions packs are pretty based as well.

It's from the makers of Doom and this is their first 3D shooter but it's gothic and cthulhu and shit? And the NIN guy worked on this.

I think the game does a good enough job of it itself. With the opening demo and that music

If that doesnt make ya wanna play I dunno what to say.

Why would you play Quake before Doom? Doom is like the perfect beginner FPS.

What about wolfenstein?

It's fun.

Actually much harder to get into due to control limitations. Getting good at mouse control in Wolf3D goes completely against getting good at mouse control in a game that supports standalone strafe keys. They're two entirely independent skill sets, and skills developed on high speed mouse movement in Wolf3D will be useless in later first person shooters, even detrimental if relied upon.

I honestly think Quake is the better starter fps because Doom sometimes has confusing level design and Quake plays more like a modern fps

I think it's a harder sell because the gameplay is so very simple and barebones. I love it for what it is, but it really doesn't offer very much beyond the shareware episode, if you were to only play one part of old Wolf3D, I'd suggest to only play Spear Of Destiny, it's 20+1 levels, but at least it uses much more of the enemies really soon, and the bosses offer a bit more variety.
Ep2 and Ep3 of the original game I think are very samey, and really doesn't do much to change things up after Ep1. It would be best to not play more than 1 level per day, as to avoid fatigue.
I would outright advise against, playing The Nocturnal Missions, they really drag, and the FormGen expansions to Spear Of Destiny are plain garbage.

Meanwhile, Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, and Rise Of The Triad, they all offer so much more, and you can easily sit down and plow through an episode in one sitting without feeling bored or fatigued.

I don't think I'd use Quake as an introduction for FPS games. Maybe Half-Life or even Deus Ex would be better suited for the task, hell, Titanfall 2 has an amazing SP campaign but that's not retro so I won't discuss it any further.
If I absolutely HAD to use Quake though, I'd call it an all killer no filler genre-defining masterpiece that would be used as a template for every 3D FPS after its launch.

Fine. Deus Ex is janky as shit but the gripping story and immersive world makes up for it, which is why I recommended it over HL which to me wasn't as special as everyone made it out to be. But for a beginner, HL would be better.

HL is so important because it takes the premise of both Doom and Quake (another dimension invades ours) and then turns it on its head halfway through when the fucking Doomguys show up to kill your scientist ass.

>> No.6562125

No, what I mean is that Deus Ex is hardly an FPS. That it is a masterpiece is beyond doubt.

The real question is how to sell Quake to someone who's used to modern FPS.

Quake is arguably the first "modern" FPS since it's the first where people used WASD/mouselook (after release, but still) in full 3D

Don't force it.

Instead make memes of it and post them on imgur and instagram and your friend will be genuinely curious about it and try it out in no time.
