just shitty map design and 3d effect really butchering the game leaving large empty space since everything is so tall now because its 3d and we cant put things too close together or the visibility will be bad

here are 2 randomly generated maps, dunno why the h5's textures went to shit but go play a game and you will see how barren everything is, large gaps between everything leave the map feel like a wasteland and the small maps are jokes, isometric games seem just better at this i do not know, perhaps its a prespective thing and 3d games are supposed to represent a smaller scale?

I wish they went for fully automaton renaissance style or at least cash it all in on wild west art deco instead of dipping partially in high fantasy. Hobbits, Armadillos and Couatls kinda seem as a bad fit; the flamethrower guy too, should've went for something different.

>> No.6557097

imho bland Armadillos act as a counterbalance to the more extravagant designs. Their color palette reinforces this by hammering down the town's main color, in a way it ties the lineup together similar to Castle's Pikeman.

Couatl is the one that confuses me. There's already an abundance of diverse creatures in the lineup, why add dragons? Especially since Heroes 3 is already full of dragons.

eh, it's hit and miss and quite buggy, but the guys working on it have their hearts in the right place I think. They mainly focused on bringing the alternative creature concept from homm 4 into heroes 3 - choose one creature on a specific tier depending on the town you're playing from a selection of two - and once chosen, for that town the selected creature is "locked in" and the other one becomes unavailable; you can of course capture another town of the same type and build the alternative dwelling there. They also added some other stuff, like new spells, artifacts, skills etc. Here is the link:
http://heroes3wog.net/the-tides-of-war-download-vcmi/

The new creatures are:
Castle - T7 Templars/Paladins (cool and a throwback to heroes 2)
Rampart - T4 Dryads/Oak Dryads (meh)
Tower - T7 Drake Golem/Dragon Golem (cool and throwback to h4)
Stronghold - T6 Couatls/Quetzalcoutals (meh but at least they are proper feathery serpent kind)
Conflux - T3 Tritons/Abyssal Tritons (autism)
Fortress - T5 Troll Witches/Troll Hags (meh turboautism)
Dungeon - T5 Illithids/Alhoons (cool but wtf dnd in homm)
Necropolis - T4 Werewolves/Dire Werewolves (cool but not undead??)
Inferno - T4 Succubi/Lilins (cool and patrician choice)

I agree, Death town in h4 was awkward af. For Factory, if they already wanted to have the frontier/wild west and steampunk vibe, I think they should've went all in either on a hopeful renaissance art deco style - clockworks, automatons, guns (like Vinci faction from Rise of Legends for example) - or a dark mad scientist design like Zaun from leauge of legends (frankenstein monsters, tesla coils, weird technology etc); with a bit of Iron Kingdoms/Warmachine influence here and there - I think one of the original homm devs from 3DO/NWC suggested this as well, when hota team approached him for consultation. Stretching it all over through high fantasy with seemingly random roster, kinda breaks it. Might be that it will all work well however, once we get to play the new town and get a bit used to it.

The problem with dragon golems in factory is that they are both a Dragon and mechanical unit. There are Dreadnoughts in line up so the only difference would be that one is dragon and other isn't. If they were both in the castle, that would be 2 T7 nearly identical units.

With Couatl it's at least very different from dreadnought while being more like phoniex-dragon hybrid rather than just a dragon.

I agree, but Dragon Golem could've been a T6 or even T5, not necessarily the second T7 they were planning for. I mean, if the theme of the town is steampunk, it is expected for it to have various mechanical units, right? I like the way they did the Couatl unupgraded, but I think it would serve better as a neutral unit. The Crimson Couatl upgrade though kinda doesn't make sense to me - creature goes from flamboyant and vivid to the "drab" palette of the town. Kinda feels like a downgrade, since every other upgraded creature in the game looks more magnificent than it's regular variant and here this doesn't seem to be the case. Maybe the upgraded version of the creature would make more sense if it was a Mech Couatl or something, seeing how the philosophy of the town is science/engineering subjugating and "upgrading" nature and this is where a concept like Dragon Golem could come in. Of all the units so far shown, I think that only Gunslinger, Worm, Juggernaut and maybe Armadillo are a good fit, the rest is crap.

They did literally place every single mythological creature known to man into the monster manuals, but I never said dnd had no inventions of it's own - beholder being one of them too. Somehow though, beholder kinda feels more domesticated in homm in comparison to outright Illithid/Alhoon, the second one being a very specific variant of the creature and the first a less commonly known real name of the race. Beholders fit a bit easier, since the upgrade is named "Evil Eye" and further disassociates the connection, thus I suggested mind-flayer + another general name for pretty much the same reason, if they are already set on having them in their mod. Mind Flayer/Brain Slayer or something like that

Since Castle's aesthetic seems mostly based on medieval Central/Eastern Europe, how about a human-centric faction inspired by Renaissance Southern/Western Europe, e.g. Venice, Rome, Spanish Armada and French monarchy. Kind of like the Cathedral concept that was floating around some time ago but with a more distinct style

fucking inconsiderate from you since those are some of the best rape faces in the game. Just look at Tyro or Antoine. Rape for days without breaking a sweat. Btw, now that you mentioned supremacists, I remember in homm lore there being an ultraxenophobic faction or a cult-like organization that was not racist, but speciest, called "Humanists". Their sole goal was utter annihilation and eradication of any and all non-human lifeforms from the face of Enroth. Wonder how that would ring a bell with the modern sensibilities lol

>>6559079
but that is silly desu, out of 9 original factions, three are "fully human" or commandeered by humans, four if you count Cove. Castle is humans + the town's heraldic animal, Tower is human mages + their conjured constructs/servants/creatures, Cove is human pirates + sea monsters and arguably Necropolis is also "fully human" although all of them (un)dead. And nothing is wrong with that.

just occurred to me that a faction that would allow for some weird cryptids and monsters like these would be a faction of mages not that much unlike what we had in GeneForge series; Shapers for a magic class that are crossing and experimenting on beings, churning out a whole lot of abominable shit and Mutants for a Might class, perfected specimens that have proven themselves capable enough to be allowed to commandeer monstrous armies of the unscrupulous mages. Could be fun.

Hmm I think the vertical border is brush and the rest isn't. There's too much "logic" with the placement of trees and plateaus (e.g. more trees around the river than elsewhere). A telltale sign of brush is that there is no logic or consistent theme whatsoever. My best guess is that anon split the map into zones with brush but crafts each zone's interior design by hand.

The grass/swamp separator is pure brush in this pic since I haven't touched either zone yet, others were created by the brush, then touched up and fixed by me.

Excess of free time. It literally wasted couple dozen hours of my life just to make that 50x26 grid as pretty as possible. The majority of the time was spend trying out how decorations overlap with each other. The rest is just placing what worked on an appropriate place on the map. it's okay when you do a "reboot" like Ubisoft did and then you can do whatever it is that you want to, in respect to the previous games and lore. But homm is a generic European medieval fantasy setting (plus SF stuff but lets not go into that right now) and just transplanting mythologies that are well removed from those themes, always makes for a harder fit and feels dislodged - unless done in such a way that a certain "alien" aesthetic is properly adapted, like in case of Rampart where some of the Japanese architecture style was used (and it did great) with the overall sylvan theme. I personally liked the design idea behind Sanctuary - focus on a single unit that when supported with the rest of the roster turns into a veritable champion that roflstomps anything in it's path - it was never before done in heroes and it felt great to "pull of a combo" and defeat your opponent with masterfully executed combination of buffs, spells and targeted attacks. But having samurais, shoguns, kenshis, mizu-kamis, kappa shoyas, wanizamis and kirins kinda felt weird in a heroes game. I'm not saying it can't be done, but an approach similar to for example what was done in Avatar the Last Airbender would work better for a fantasy deeply rooted in European fables and stereotypes. Aquatic is good, yes.

yeah, and another thing that caught my eye - the new Couatl unit that HotA team did for Factory. At first I was dismissive a bit due to the fact that it didn't look at all like a plumed serpent, more like a feathered dino/dragon of all things; but then it dawned on me that it was the right way to do it - it brought the creature more in line with what was already present in the game, without disrupting it too much, while at the same time keeping the connection with the original "source material" from which the inspiration was taken. Good move, at least in my opinion.

>> No.6563064

>>6563034
I agree, it doesn't fit with the whole steampunk/frontier theme they are going for and it would work better as a neutral imo. New terrain and new units with unique abilities of their own are to be expected for a whole new town, but I honestly don't know why they went for two T7s. It won't be too much of an issue though I think, since building both would probably require you to be obscenely rich and have access to multiple magical resources, which you will need in abundance for town development as well. While it sounds OP in theory, in practice I believe that most of the time you would have to choose between one or the other. I liked the concept from H4 where every tier had two options and then you had to commit to one or the other, depending on the situation in the game and your preferred playstyle and this is somewhat reminiscent of that. So I hope it will all be well balanced out for the benefits that you would get; HotA is aiming for competitive heroes play so that should be a given. I bet it will all be fine once we get to take the Factory for a spin and get used to the way it works.

I mean there is no way around it - HotA is speed-centric and magic-centric. It's like someone played a lot of HoMM4 as Academy, decided they want that in HoMM3, but without specific faction and... HotA meta came out of it.

For all intents and purposes
>migth >>>> magic
>health/defense >>>> speed
there isn't a single spellcasting hero or spell that can match the high att and def of might heroes and dmg consistently dealt by the armies they lead, unless you are referring to armageddon or implosion/surrender shenanigans - and they too are not that hard to manage or counter with loads of options. Spells are good for the utility and support they provide, not as a primary damage output. Going first is great and speed is always crucial in combat, yes, but if your opponent can't put a dent into your numbers in the first round of his attack, he's not going to have a good time regardless of how fast his units can run.

>> No.6564847

Friendly reminder that currently it's firmly upper-mid-tier.
>>6564664
SoD was speed-centric and might-centric due to magic being relatively easily counterable with two different artifacts inb4 Thorgrim, no he was never popular. High initiative is a boon and speed is great, yet Stronghold and Fortress with their top speed of 13 (not the best) and low magic are still extremely popular while Inferno with a level 5 mage guild and top speed of 17 is still dumpster tier. I hate that this could be a good discussion but it's literally always segwaying to that one shitposter who genuinely thinks HoMM3 is about who casts Mass Slow first when any cursory look at high level endgame fights in either SoD or HotA shows that people often don't even initiate the fight with any spell.

>there isn't a single spellcasting hero or spell that can match the high att and def of might heroes and dmg consistently dealt by the armies they lead, unless you are referring to armageddon or implosion/surrender shenanigans
HotA banned Orb of Inhibition / Recanter's Cloak and allowed players to keep paying fees to the mage guild to "fish" for spells that used to be a pure lottery, which leads to occasional mage mains relying on attrition warfare with summon elemental / resurrection / implosion spam. That said, there are still woefully few actually good mage heroes compared to might heroes; it's Grindan/Labetha, Luna, Ciele (notably all Conflux), Thant, Solmyr, Jeddite/Alamar.

It's like the 11th faction. As long as it doesn't make it OP I feel they should be doing as much as possible to make any new faction unique.

I'm fact I would support going back to vanilla faction and giving them a few new tools, though aside from letting Tower have access to all Golems I'm not sure what they could add.

>> No.6565007

>>6564856
>HotA banned Orb of Inhibition / Recanter's Cloak
but they can be enabled, they are not deleted from the game; just edit the template and you're good. This move was done due to the competitive scene and the "current meta" of heroes from what I was able to gather, might change in the future.
>keep paying fees to the mage guild to "fish" for spells that used to be a pure lottery
dunno, this feature is cool and fair as far as I'm concerned; it's not as if the "pure lottery" was fair, you could get fucked over easily by rng and end up with a host of useless spells just because. And it is not as if you are getting this reroll for free, you still have to pay the full price as if you were building the mage guild of appropriate spell level all over again - for a single spell.
>there are still woefully few actually good mage heroes
true, since it turns out that even a good spell specialization is hard to offset the lack of Attack and Defense that would instead get poured into Knowledge and Spellpower. Not sure what would be a good way to balance this out, apart from making more spells that would either directly influence hero stats or provide creatures with additional abilities and reworking existing spells so that they don't suck but remain within manageable power levels.
>>6564847
Slow is an OP spell not because it can devastate your opponent but because it allows you to clear mobs in the first two weeks with impunity and reap the rewards without loosing any troops. The first player to cast a spell in a late game would pretty much define how the "magic battle" between the two will be played out, so it is a very important tactical decision to make and one not made lightly.

>> No.6565019

>>6565003
>In fact I would support going back to vanilla faction and giving them a few new tools
This idea ain't half bad, actually it is pretty sound. Toying around with stats, abilities and upgrades to further balance out the towns is the way to go imo, much easier to "fix the game" if it is flexible as a whole, not set in stone where you have to rigidly dance around already established stuff. The Tribes of the East expansion for H5 also had the concept of "alternate upgrades" where you had two possible upgrade paths for each unit; something to revisit maybe. It would both give a multitude of additional features to each of the factions and expand the unit limit without adding artificial new tiers that make no sense (T8+).

Not him but a Terracotta Soldier is from the Terracotta Army. A couple thousand years ago an emperor in China had a fuckload of statues made out of terracotta to depict his army. They've excavated individual statues in the amount of around 8000 soldiers, 500 horses, and 100 chariots. I assume he means the terracotta soldier would be a moving statue and not the actual soldiers they depict. Basically it'd be a swordsman/stone golem hybrid. As for ninja being a shooter, I assume he's thinking like throwing stars?
Either way, pretty unimaginative lineup.

Remembered this one post a few months back where an anon was spitting some asian themed ideas, found it in archive and stitched the posts together. I like it because it doesn't rely on the stereotypical shit and leans more on the more terrifying and inhuman side of things.

I had an idea on how to make the poor peasant a bit more interesting and valuable; add the H5 ability
>Taxpayer - +1 gold per day for each peasant in your army
and raise it to +10 to be at least somewgat meaningful. And another one that came to mind
>Levy - upgrade the peasant into any basic human unit by paying the full unit cost in the appropriate castle
So, if Necromancers can get skellingtons out of the Transformer, why not give peasants some added flexibility that would make you want to take them on as sort of a "multitool population"? Units I had in mind were Pikeman, Archers, Swordsman, Mages and Rogues - in their encampment on the map - neatly covers the basic archetypes (Fighter/Mage/Thief). Wouldn't go beyond lvl. 4 to keep things "lowly" lel. Thoughts?

>> No.6568431

or keep it up to level 2 only, to keep things low, "balanced" and "uniform" - that would still give you Pikemen, Archers and Rogues - and once the Dervish town from H3SW is introduced in HotA as well, Acolytes will become an option as well, as will Rogues in the town itself. Upgade should work in the external dwellings as it would in towns, for some additional flexibility - but not in hill forts.

In case of Tower, both are bonded magic servants; we know that a Christmas town is already in the works while they are still ironing out the Factory and hopefully they will realize the H3SW Dervish town or reimagine the Oasis town that was already done for a different mod. The theme is sound and lineups not that hard to think of, we only need to wait.
>>6568467
>very balanced idea
if you had three Hovels that gave you +25 x 3 peasants a week, at +1 gold, that is +75g per stack per day in the first week. If you keep stocking them for that purpose only and we take the ideal scenario that you don't lose any or the ownership of the dwellings, you would get something like this:
>1st week total 525g
>2nd week total 1575g
>3rd week total 3725g
>4th week total 4875g
With 300 peasants at the end of the first month after you started recruiting them, under ideal conditions, you would get some 4875 gold...which would turn into 48750 with +10 bonus. So yeah, I think you are correct, +10 would be too much. Maybe tweak it to give a range of +1-3 for good measure and a bit of randomness.

Turning peasants into swordsmen or mages would be very OP. Balance wise, they could be promotable into any T1 unit in the appropriate town. I know it doesn't make much sense if they turn into trogdolytes, but that's the only way it wouldn't be broken.

Yeah, that's why I changed it in the next post to only be limited to T1 and T2 - but I would still keep it human only. It would limit what you can do with them and it is a bit "retarded" for them to become sprites or imps or gnolls. Getting their exact neutral dwelling on the map is already a happenstance, so I don't think additions like this would upset the game balance at all, just give a useless unit that might as well not be in the game at all a bit of utility and spotlight.

So, I'm banning diplomacy because it would be especially OP on my map. Also banning learning because I'm capping levels at 21. Ballistics and artillery are better than I thought (though still not great). The one I'm struggling with is first aid; it's crap, right? I can see it being useful in keeping your lvl 6s and 7s alive in the early game or later when fighting much weaker enemies, but is that worth a skill? I'm leaning towards "no".

>> No.6568747

>>6568734
First aid has a couple of uses in the early game as you say, but it's extremely unlikely that you'd see it in action, ever. You need the skill, the tent, a high-level creature to tank with, and a fight where it makes a difference. All of that coming together happens once in a blue moon.
I'd just say ban it.

Not many other options for potential terrain outside of marsh (essentially swamp) and salt flats (essentially wasteland), but I’ve thought of something fairly unique. Elevated terrain. Made an example of what I’m sort of thinking.

It would look like less steep mountains, and it would be "climbable".
The terrain would only cover 2 tiles as a border before transitioning to existing terrain.
Since it’s just 2 tiles and it’s a steep incline, it would need a huge penalty. Perhaps 800%? As native terrain the penalty could be half that.

>you know what a "quilin" (foo lion) is, but not a terracotta soldier?
If an image of a creature isn't immediately recognizable in mass consciousness as a fantasy creature it's probably a poor fit for Heroes. This is why all the non-descriptive bullshit in Ubisoft heroes like "Blazing Glory" or "juggernaut" feels so out of place. Dog lions and Chinese dragons show up all over the place in modern fantasy games by those names, Chinese golem army though... It's not a completely terrible concept but you'd have to name them something else and in any case they'd clash with already existing golems of other type and allegiance. Personally I don't think an asian-themed faction is impossible to fit in Heroes considering how much of an eclectic soup it already is but it would need just as much though and finesse as a concept of a high-tech/steampunk faction. Just making it another panasian Pandaria-like is low effort.

>>6568028

The jobbuko would just be a cooler dendroid.

Absolute majority of them are fantasy staples, but even those that aren't are simple enough. Like, everybody knows what an orc or a skeleton or a cerberus or naga is. Basically, for the love of god, keep it simple, because it's in the DNA of the game to be simple and accessible without drowning into some specific lore.

Learning, as it is currently, is dogshit so there is no use in banning it for the "benefits" it will give - ban it for how useless it is. Essentially it is a dead slot that literally does nothing at all for your hero; here is a quote from the guy that actually did the math:
>Using information found on the level advancement page, you can calculate that if non-learned hero gains 55000 experience, hero's level will be 18. Say you've learned basic Learning at level 3, advanced at level 5 and expert at level 8, this would have turned 55000 experience into 62475 experience, making that hero level ... 18. Basically, you've wasted 3 level ups, and barely got 1 extra level up by the time you're level 20. So, unless you plan to develop this hero towards level 30, avoid this skill. I must admit I was deceived by it until I did the calculations and won't choose it again unless I'm playing a large map and building a superhero. But even in that case I'll think hard - an extra useful skill could do more good than a few primary skill points. So, avoid Learning complete, be stupid, and you'll be smart :)
that bonus would have to be pumped up significantly for it to have any effect, probably to something like 50/100/150 or even 100/150/200

>half the units in homm3 aren't instantly recognizable
except that they are; H3SW dev put it nicely:
>The dominant factors are "simplicity", which means that the creature must be well-known in popular culture and its name must be available to guess just while looking at its exterior, "mythological origin", which means that the creature is likely to come from mythology or old-age religious images, and "fairy-taleness" which means that the creature cannot be a grimdark D&D concept, it should look like a creature from a child game, when even the skeletons are smiling and zombies are clumsy. This is what pretty much defines the Heroes 2 creature pool.

Complex philosophy concepts are pretty much not required, because Heroes 2 is a simple game. I don't want to see any kind of Lamassu or Naga or other concepts from modern games where the designers had to think their brains out for a newer image so they had to dig deep in not-so-well-known mythologies of the East. Heroes 2 is a Western game, and all creatures portrayed there are Western in origin, and even the Genies/Nomads are so generic because that's how they look in the eyes of Western people. Disney's Aladdin included.
similar way of thinking - with just a bit more leniency - goes for heroes 3 too imo.

It is not very good because Golems just aren't ever a powerstack - it's hard to amass them, they don't have the initiative to deliver a deft first strike either way, and Tower's development plan to Titans is carried by Master Gremlins (buffed by Master Genies) and early Nagas. Mysticism is worse than Scholar (Neela can at least save some time on visiting every trash shrine out there) and Sorcery isn't a good skill.

You pick Neela if you want a guaranteed decently scaling hero (due to Armorer specialty), otherwise Aine or Solmyr for early game while fishing for a better hero in tavern (any generic Barbarian will do, Orrin is the pipe dream, could hire an Elementalist too I guess). That's about it. I'd even take Torosar over Josephine to bait the AI into taking useless hits at my ballista, and for starting Tactics.

I decided to try HOMM3 a few months ago, but man does it feel hard. The game is always pretty easy up until around what feels like mid game when it feels like everyone but me is pumping out hardcore units constantly and managing to take every single castle I leave for a moment, annihilating my best armies, leaving me to rebuild for weeks while their deathstacks start rolling through all of my land.

Are there any ways of actually getting good at this?

Coyot and Jolly Joker’s guides are good places to start, just google them. They aren’t RUSSIAN PRO PLAY tier but its solid info to get your feet wet and doing the campaigns and scenarios even at the highest difficulties.

Otherwise, watching good players on youtube is the best way to learn. Mekick has a lot of good beginner info and a ton of content. If anything, I was maining Fafner for... dunno... 5 years? 6? Literally my first 5 years of HoMM3, if not longer, was nothing more than Tower with Fafner, simply because he gives nagas +1 to Speed. He's also the reason why I learned to appriciate Resistance and generally not hating Tower, even if stat-wise, hero-wise, unit-wise and price-wise it's 2nd worst faction, aside Inferno being probably the only faction which I can pin-point and say "this is worse than rest of them". they fixed Mysticism in HotA so it now gives 5/10/15 instead of 2/3/4 which is not only a substantial increase but helps you go clearing for days while still having enough mana for every combat and the skill becomes entirely ridiculous with the spell discount Mages give. And I wouldn't say (Iron) Golems aren't a powerstack - at 200g for def 10 hp 35 and taking only 25% dmg from spells, they rule T3 as unrivaled cost-effective tanks, with enough speed and attack to jump into melee when someone closes in on your shooters. They are not designed as a primary offensive tool but as a defensive tank, both to protect your squishier ranged units and defend your towns. If only they could be upgraded further to Steel/Gold/Diamond in their respective dwellings on the map, they would be valid all the way into the late game.

>>6571682
funny enough, Fafner was the first hero I've ever stuck with when I first found out about the game some 20 years ago, when I didn't understand anything about how stuff actually worked and thought Good to Go was the best map in the game lel. I wouldn't say that Tower is 2nd worst faction, far from it. The lineup is solid, creature specials great, support buildings too, some good heroes there to boost your army even further, the only problem - they cost an arm and a leg. On the maps where you would be hard pressed for resources or starved for them, you will have a hard time, in any other occasion most of your creatures will outclass the opponent, especially when amply supplied with buffs.

>They made Magic even stronger
Not that anon, but doesn't sound like fun to me

I still insist that it's 2nd worst faction, simply because due to costs, you are very easily behind everyone else and your actual units are for the most part lackluster. In fact, there isn't a single "wow" unit in the entire faction.
>Gremlins
Absurdly weak, the fact they are a shooter means shit, when they do mosquito bite damage and have abysmal stats
>Gargoyles
Meh. Not bad, not good, just there
>Golems
Only good when iron, otherwise worse than nothing
>Mages
Too slow and squishy af (I mean mages, I get it, but still), too little growth, even if otherwise solid unit
>Genies
Utterly useless in combat, absurd costs, your fastest unit with just 11 speed (they always go before titans)
>Nagas
The closest this faction gets to solid unit
>Titans
Unupgaded version is a joke, upgrade costs obscene amount of money

So your lineup is "meh", but costs a lot and requires a whole lot of various resources to build. Add to that heroes and native hero classes and you have a faction that might not be utterly terrible, but is distinctively inferior to everything else. I'd rather conceive defeat than bother playing with Tower at random pick - and I used to main this faction.

>> No.6572294

>>6572291
Also, I'd argue that gremlins weakness comes from the fact they ARE a shooter, rather than being their strong side. They can be easily neutered and recieve melee penalty when engaging in combat, so not only their range is a joke, when facing anyone upfront, they get trashed.

>> No.6572309

>Magic
it's not OP, magic never was, it just sucks less with support skills actually doing what they were supposed to do; otherwise you would have yet another "dead slot" like Eagle Eye or Learning that no one wants, might as well not be in the game at all
>Tower lineup bad
well I beg to differ and here is why, I'm not sure how you "mained" this faction and used it so poorly
>Gremlins
You do understand that the only reason why after you buy two heroes in your Tavern or retreat from combat, your hero comes with a single T1 unit and not with a full troop compliment like the rest are Gremlins? There was something before called "Gremlin rush" where you could amass some good 400+ gremlins on the first day and proceed to charge through neutrals and roflstomp all opposition. Only T1 shooter, OP in early game, just bless them for that maxed damage and shoot away.
>Gargoyles
their prime purpose is tactical - taking away retaliations from enemy stacks that you wish to strike, blocking your shooters and if you're playing Solmyr (or just using chain lightning), serving as "chain lightning nods" as to avoid your more valuable units being hit.
>Golems
as I said before, best T3 tank/defender and when amped-up with spells, a veritable juggernaut
>Mages
good shooter, -2 mp spell discount; just keep'em blocked and fire away
>Genies
the whole point of this unit is multiple spellcasting per round; split them into 3-4 slots and cast five spells per round with ease. This will buff your army to ludicrous levels and using them as a beating stick is simply the wrong way to go.
>Naga
solid overall
>Titans
This is your beating stick. Giants are one of the cheapest T7 dwellings to build IIRC, only Hydra is cheaper. And you can easily get them early enough, att/def/hp are great, buff them with genies and murder everything. Titans speak for themselves.

So your lineup is costly but it isn't "meh", it only requires a bit more thought and strategy then your average Rampart bullshit.

>> No.6572421

>>6572412
... so shit units that cost a tonne and are situational at best, terrible on average?
Yeah, exactly my issue with that lineup

Also, tell me how you are going to have in the same time:
1) Functional army
2) Anti-retaliation stacks of gargoyles (who are too slow to pull it reliably anyway)
3) Buffing stacks of genies
Because as far as I know, you have 7 slots in your army and dragging around any of those "situational tactical" stacsk means you aren't lugging around actual unit stack at all.

No, Tower has ok units stat-wise with great specials that are bad or average on their own under certain circumstances but work wonders and are great when used together. And you adapt your strategy depending on how far you are into the game, what approach you wish to use depending on the tools that you have available and what are you attacking and by not sticking to a single hero like a noob. It is a faction that has a steeper learning curve, but when you understand how to use it, becomes quite enjoyable. Same with Fortress, Stronghold or Inferno (still sucks the most though).

It just occurred to me that the best faction to fill this niche, lore and theme-wise, and for it to work well with homm would be Vori Snow elves or "True-elves" (pureblood) as they call themselves. They are:
>an insular nation
>extremely isolationist and xenophobic
>arrogant and elitist
>glorious past and supreme warriors
>Rampart elves of AvLee (wood/grand) that are descended from them ("renegades") already have some Japanese influence in their architecture - it is only natural to assume Vori are the same or better
Inspiration can be further taken from Warhammer Fantasy High Elves and Lowryn Elves of mtg since both are aristocratic, ruthless, and predatory. Transpose it through Asian mythology and medieval Japan to give them a character and flair of their own et voila - a new town is born! It would also be a snow-based faction, since their island is frozen in ice and that would kinda be in concert with the "Christmas town" that should be released after Factory.

It's mostly hints and bits of info HotA devs divulged intentionally or by error in vc over at their discord or on Heroes Community forums, but the current "rumor" has it that the "christmas town" was in development the moment they started working on Factory or even earlier, but had only one dev assigned to this project because Factory/global HotA had the priority and once v.1.7.0 is released, they will fully commit to it. Pic related is heavily outdated atm, but stuff like that was planned from the very beginning as you can see. Forge became Factory, Kronverk is the infamous "christmas town" and Cathedral will probably be abandoned in favor of Oasis/Dervish.

It offers some really nice maps outside of the fun campaigns it has, and the gameplay is different enough from 3 that you might appreciate some of the things it does differently (instead of the Wait button, you just SKIP a turn; all flyers can always fly to any point on the map even if their speed is low, unless Slow is cast on them). It's a good game.

I guess the only redeeming factor here is that you won't be able to use the spell until you have at least Knowledge 3 and even then it will be a one off until you get some more levels/Intelligence. Still, ridiculously OP, I don't even want to know what a specialized DD gives; longer range? More uses per day? Lower cost? Hell, any one of these can easily break the game in half.

What is it that makes HOMM3 so fast at playing?
I swear, it's the fastest game I've ever played, in terms of how much shit I can get done in so little time.
For instance in modern strategy games like XCOM2, it takes like 15 minutes at the very least to do a mission, and a mission is just moving a few units.
In HOMM3 the maps are huge but every thing is happening with no downtime ever
Why couldn't they do the same for 3D heroes games? It feels sluggish as fuck to play a map in comparison, and the maps themselves are 10x smaller so it's even worse if you'd rescale them to the size of HOMM3

comparing squad-based TBS games like X-Com and "pure" TBSs like heroes is not all that grateful, but the answer to your question is easy - Heroes are a very simple game at it's core. There is a lot of things to do but none of them require you to go through more than two or three steps tops to complete them and all of them build on the familiarity of one another. Only four primary skills (five for creatures), one structure built per turn, one skill choice of two given per level up, no ability or spell that relies on some overly complicated formula or calculations, straightforward and fast-paced combat, one confirmation screen for every adventure map location you visit etc. The emerging complexity that comes from these many simple basic premises still gives for a very fast game, especially once you get the gist of it and actually know what you are doing. 3D mostly has an issue with perspective, animation and presentation that all take more time and are not as easy to familiarize with as is a 2D environment. Keep it simple, keep it fun.

I'm not justifying that cringe.png version of the Arabian nights/Nomad theme, I'm only gay for how they did that thing in Heroes 3 Succession Wars mod with the Dervish town, where it turned out fucking fantastic and I love it. I would transplant it directly into HotA if it were possible. What you posted is a VCMI revamped abandoned project for the Oasis town so of course it will look atrocious lol. And Courtyard is nothing better; Cupids (?!?), Salamanders, Musketeers, Dodos, Mandrakes, Homunculi and Jabberwocks...?! I love the next schizo trip as any other autist does but seriously wtf? Shit is bonkers, I'll give him that, and the palette for the town screen looks nice, but overall it's garbo and doesn't fit anywhere near homm. based retard, what fucking drugs are you on? I'm not sure if you are just being an asshole since you don't like the idea of a desert town or actually an idiot. With the level of mental gymnastics that you are using, no lineup ever makes sense and it can be presented as random shit thrown together. But to say that a desert/arabian theme has less thought put in it than the Crapyard is plain moronic.
>fucking anubises
fucking Anubites, yes, because Egypt was the most prominent desert civilization, ever, maybe you've heard of it? Literally defined the theme
>medusas+bows+desert
you know where medusas lived according to greek mythology? In western fucking Anatolia in Asia Minor, which is an arid place and a desert in part. And only upgraded version has bows, I don't see what is the issue with the weapon here?
>imams
the faction is not muslim-themed but arabic themed, learn the difference. The Acolyte might very well be a desert hermit or a mystic or a wise old man from some fable. Stop projecting your shit when it isn't there.
>gypsy wagon camp
or I don't know, a caravan maybe?
>nomads are from steppe
except when they are not, for example when they are from a DESERT, like Bedouins. Which is plainly the case here and can be seen by their arsenal and garments which are totally arabic
>rogues are universal
just these rogues upgrade to bandits and are also designed to look as if taken from "One Thousand and One Nights"; "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves", rings a bell?
>gold golems
not present in either Oasis or Dervish roster, take your meds schizo
>mummies
you're just seeing things that aren't there TAKE YOUR MEDS; even if they were there, it doesn't matter that they are undead, since EGYPTIAN mummies are the most famous ones and usually the ones to which such units are referring to (unless clearly Aztec or some other obscure shit). So, you know, Pyramids, Sarcophagi, DESERTS and SAND and all that.

>> No.6576306

>>6576293
(cont.)
The last two of the Dervish roster are a Manticore, which is a creature originally from Persian myths and Lamp Genie is self-explanatory. So in total, the town has a well established theme, drawing from the desert civilizations and related mythologies with a strong nod to Arabian Night fables. As solid as it gets. Oasis I won't comment, since as I said it is an unfinished project brought to life via VCMI, but even then the lineup there is clearly Egyptian/Sumer inspired. And what does Crapyard roster have for a theme?
>Cupid are gargoyles cousins
a god of erotic attraction represented usually as a baby angel with a bow and arrow for some reason is now a construct with a heavy hitting hammer?? And somehow them being "related" to creatures from another castle is relevant?
>Homunculi
I guess as constructs they have a connection with a totally wrong representation of a cupid and that would be it
>Salamanders, mandrakes and jabberwock summons
amphibians that are from the elemental plane of fire, screaming humanoid (??) plants and that one creature from Alice in Wonderland have a distinct unifying theme? In what? In being unrelated?
>dodos are fucking awesome
dumb extinct bird = awesome; ok, whatever you say. Also entirely unrelated to the above.
>Musketeers
on top of all this disconnected imbecile shit, renaissance human gunman is there to top the cake with a cherry on top, because why the hell not
And you now look at the two lists and somehow, your mental faculties arrive at the conclusion that Dervish lineup is random shit smacked together and Crapyard has a totally logical and sound roster? Honestly now? Think twice before you post your next brain fart pls.
