Could we get a retro sports game thread? There is little to no talk about sports games on this board. I find that surprising considering the fact that one of Sega's biggest advantages and marketing strategies came from the fact that they had much better sports games than Nintendo. There are so many good games too

Arch Rivals
NBA Jam
Mutant League football/hockey
Tecmo Super Bowl
Wayne Gretzky hockey
Joe Montana football

What are some of your favorites?

My favorite retro sports game was the first (I think) FIFA for Nintendo. I had one of those 100-games-in-one Super Joy things and I played FIFA and the sliding penguin game for ages. When the game finally broke it literally popped and smoked a little, lol Chinese engineering at its finest

Besides the ones that you've named on Genesis, I also like NBA Hangtime, and most of the sport games on Neo Geo that I've been playing lately. Street Hoop, Windjammers, Super Dodge Ball, Baseball Stars 2, Super Baseball 2020 (also on the Genesis, great game), Tecmo World Soccer 96, Neo Drift Out, Neo Turf Masters, League Bowling, and a few more Soccer games.

When i was a kid the other kids would make me "referee" instead of letting me play. I didnt know the rules so i just watched them from the side. When i went home i studied basketball rules really hard because i wanted to be good. When we all played basketball again i knew the rules. I ran in and fouled the guy for travelling and he said what am i gonna do about it. Then all the kids gathered around and called me a fag. I got shoved into the dirt. When i told the teacher she said i should go read Harry potter or play tag with the girls. I did neither. I just ended up playing gameboy on the floor while sweating in the sun because i wore too many layers of clothes because i was uncomfortable with my body. My teacher would give me poor grades because of this saying i "failed pe". I was also bad at math but not the worst. I was the only kid held back in the 4th grade because of low overall grades in 2 of my 4 """classes"". When i went to middle school the black kids would bully me and call me a shooter. I would eat my lunches in the bathrooms and it smelled like shit and piss. I dropped out of highschool at 16. I was born with no talents or skills and no ability to learn.

NBA jam has never been topped and i religiously played the home release.

Tecmo Bowl. I strangled 3 people because of the unstoppable pass play.
Double Dribble. This game was so glorious the high school jocks would end up over at my place on the weekends and we'd all play.
Then Tecmo Super Bowl came along and changed life as we knew it. It's my favorite game ever. So much time and fun with my best friend playing this game. I beat someone with the Patriots and they were the 49ers.
NHL 94. I got so good I would beat people without a goalie.
Madden came along and ruined football games for us. When my QB throws a football my WR better jump up and catch the ball. I only played it once and it sucked. Every maddenfag I see I want to exterminate for being retarded.
Pro Wrestling and Tecmo World Wrestling were more we had a lot of fun with.

NFL Blitz is the first and last word in football games. One of very few games in general that has it's definitive version on the Dreamcast, as well.

I love Base Wars, and I would recommend it even to people who aren't particularly into baseball. You get to customize your own team of cyborgs with interchangable parts and weapons. When a runner is tagged by the ball, instead of being immediately out, you get to fight for it in combat. It's like if you crossed Bases Loaded with Armored Core. It's baseball's answer to Mutant League Football, although that should be the other way around because this came out first.

This game common as dirt or something?

I bought a bunch of NES games off Facebook the other week and it was among them. I didn't think anything of it at the time, but now I see it everywhere I go. If someone is selling games, it's among them. If I see a single game at a thrift store, it's that face staring back at me.

Outside Mario Tennis and Mario Golf theres 1080 Snowboarding, Wave Race 64, Ready 2 Rumble and the Tony Hawk Pro Skater games.

What's funny is the football and basketball games took a major nose dive once 3D came out. Even the newest Madden or NBA 2k are not nearly as bad as people make them. In the early days they figured out how to make it fun through more arcade style gameplay. But I challenge you to find a single good basketball or football game made during the N64 and PS1 era.

Funny story for this thread

One fo the creators of NBA Jam came out recently and said that he put special programming in where if you are playing the Bulls vs the Pistons, when the Bulls take a shot just before the buzzer it will almost always miss. He is a Pistons fan and at the time the Pistons had a huge rivalry going on between the Bulls.

Well if you decide to check it out I would recommend looking at the actual good ones people still talk about. Some mentioned in this thread.

If you go back to play Mike Ditka's Power Football on Sega Genesis you will not have a fun time. The strategy games were garbage. The best we're the ones that had more arcade style(NBA Jam) or a gimmick (Mutant League Football)
