It wasnt until over 10 years later when I finally was able to use the s-video ports to play n64 and sega and i realized i wasnt missing much.

I don't know whether this is bait but plasmas have built-in protection against burn-in. They dim the screen after 10 minutes if it's static, and fully switch off after a few hours. You practically have to force a screen to suffer burn-in.

The reason why they stopped manufacturing them is because they realised they were lasting many years without failing, and that's a big no-no in capitalism.

Still rocking my 10yo 60" LG Plasma, got it cheap 5 years ago - no pedestal and only dropped once. Sometimes it gets a blue vertical line but people online said they go away on their own and they do otherwise perfect (except one torn out hdmi)

Very happy with the intensity and color depth. The basement battle bridge display is a much older much shittier plasma and it's good for gaming too.

Not him, but I still have my plasma, after replacing the main board once and opening it up to clean the contacts on everything to eliminate the fucking electric hum.

I can say from experience that burn in is definitely an issue, even on later models like my 2012 Panasonic that had lots of protection, including slightly moving the images a line or two every so often.

The big problem with burn in isn't on paused screens so much as it is for items that remain static in the screen for a long time. For TV, this would be the channel logos that would remain in a fixed position on the corner of the screen, or similar channels with tickers, and for games, you'd have to worry about things like life bars, status bars, and maps.

Most modern games do away with that stuff these days, so it's an issue, but around the end of the PS3 era it was still common practice to just leave a bright white huge bar up on the screen for hours at a time (one of the many issues of Assassin's Creed 3), and let me tell you, that shit will stick with you screen for a little bit, but thankfully it can get cleared up if you're lucky. Worst case scenario is that it's stuck there forever, which I've definitely seen in some hotels that still have these Plasmas.

Point is: it's real, and like anytjing you gotta take care of it. It's worth it for the picture, a very small price to pay ultimately.

My projection TV is stilly pretty serviceable, but it's a DLP projector from 2006ish. The original bulb went out in like 2011. The replacement was ~130 dollars. When that went out in 2018, I just bought two cheap ass Chinese knockoff bulbs for $20 a pop. They're pretty dark, but the screen is 70 inches, so it covers most of the entire bedroom wall directly opposite my bed; which is pretty close, and the corners are as bright as the center, so viewing angle doesn't seem to be a problem even with the shit bulbs.
If anything, watching at night it just feels like I'm watching a movie in the theater. Supposedly, decades and decades ago, movie projectors used to have professionals manning them and the image was much better in theaters, but maybe that's my boomer dad blowing smoke up my ass due to his nostalgia.
Can't use that beast in the dog days of summer, though, or the AC can't even keep up. Also, N64 looks like complete ass beyond the lowest expectations on it for some reason.
