It's not exactly extremely "rare", but when it was released in the U.S., it was a huge flop commercially. Years later, it was "rediscovered" and developed a cult following, and is considered to be one of those "lost gems."

I'm guessing Smash Bros. and people bitching about Mother 3 not getting translated on every forum and comment section on the Internet drove the price up. Back before GameStop stopped carrying older used games, every time I went in the same copy of Earthbound would still be sitting there for $30 or $40.

SNES prices in general seem to have bloated more than any other system over the past decade (though if Amazon is any measure to go by, GCN is getting there). Meanwhile, there are only a handful of Genesis/Mega Drive games that command more than $20 for loose copies.

Mother 2 isn't a rare or valuable game. It sold well and was popular in Japan. Nearly everyone who has a Super Famicom collection has one.
