What are the most ambient and tranquil locations in retro games?

The home worlds in Spyro 2, along with all of the Artisan worlds in Spyro 1 take the cake for me. The music, the colors of the skies, the cascading water and the sense of otherwordly emptiness (aside from frogs and sheep) make me feel totally at peace. I've never seen anything to rival such ambiance.

Another favorite is this little secret beach where you get the soft sand item in Pokemon GSC. I owned the game for a long time before I discovered the area...maybe that's why I like it so much. I also just enjoy the idea of stumbling onto a hidden beach with hot sand on a sunny day, amidst the hustle and bustle of Johto where three girls are just chilling.

Its the little fenced in area with trees at the bottom of the picture :D

The End of Time in Chrono Trigger is also up there for me.

Something about paved stones and wrought iron fencing under the light of a single, elegant street lamp -- floating between time and space -- has a beautiful contrast of nothingness and order. Also the fantastic music makes you feel outside of time...like there is no rush to do anything.

This place and fishermans horizon.

In fact FFVIII was full of great locations which carried a halcyon atmosphere. The BGM which accompanied each place also added to the ambient atmosphere.

Here's another -- those secret holes in Zelda OoT. Be they under a rock or revealed by rain, something about the snugness and the "musty" sense they give always made me feel safe. The music was like a low hum, that made it feel separate and hidden from the outside world.

With the monster pens and orchard, golem shop and foundry and musical room, it would be even greater.

It might not be exactly what you mean but I'd have to go with Rainbow Road or whatever it's called in Mario Kart 64. I always loved that feeling of ending the cup there. The tracks before are all really competitive, you always need to concentrate not to make a mistake but on Rainbow Road everything becomes peaceful, you can't fall down, the race becomes less important, you just drive as if you where alone. And the colours!

Auria, City of Gold in Breath of Fire
Underwater levels in DKC
Vine and Bramble levels in DKC2

The whole game is a realm of comfort and wonder.
I have yet to see a game match it.

Especially not Dawn of Mana.

Acually, you know what? Fuck all the games after Legend. A repeditive as fuck dungeon crawler, a physics engine test, and an unintuitive RTS game. What a sad attempt at a series revival.

Oh well. Bravery Default looks like it could fit in that hole in my heart.
