Age of wonders 2. Starting your budding elven empire, hiding and defending against waves of orcs and fire wizards, while investigating your own spells and growing your economy and armies. Crafting items for whatever random heroes join your cause, exploring the map, taking out bandits.

Second is arguably the best of the series and has the preetiest graphics but the thirf went further with the development of class/race system they had in mind. It's worth trying at the very least, even thouugh some of the unit options are retarded as fuck.
