how do I git gud at virtual on? these controls are balls

>> No.6537489

play Bulk Slash instead. Virtual On was meant to be played with two joy sticks in the arcade.

You just have to get into the movement rhythm. I played it religiously on a DC pad and it felt great

You don't need the twin sticks, and nobody played with them anyways.

How the fuck did you manage?

Lol, right? My hands would've been mad at me.

This. Bulk Slash is way better with controls and gameplay. But whenever I'm playing that game, I hate picking up the anime chicks that tell you in Japanese what direction that the enemies are shooting you from. They'll scream at you in multiple different emotions. Other than that, gameplay is pretty badass and 3d cel-shaded graphics.

>> No.6538734

Jumping and dashing is the key to everything. Attacking is secondary. I know that sounds counter-intuitive for an arena fighter like this, but once you get into the flow of combat, it makes a lot more sense. Even though twin sticks are ideal, it can still be done with a D-pad if you're patient enough.
>>6537489
Bulk Slash is legit, especially if you're into waifus.

>> No.6538737

Megatudo 2096 was better.

This. Best played in the arcade.

I won't remember most of the terms, so here it goes.
If you're playing the console versions, don't go with default controls (I forgot what they're called). Go with "Original" or "Arcade". Even if you don't like the twin sticks, it's important to at least have control of what attacks you're doing. With the default console controls, you don't have any control of what attack comes out - it all depends on positioning and if you're dashing or neutral. The original and arcade controls have two triggers for attacks. For the third attack, push both together. You should at least configure the controls like this.

About movement, it's not really important to keep the enemy locked-on at all times, just that you know where they are. To lock-on quickly, do a neutral jump and then push the jump button again, in quick succession. This isn't really a "pro strat", because even the CPU does this reacquire lock-on. Don't try to turn the camera around to reacquire lock-on, it takes ages.

I think lastly... even if there are three "attacks" (right trigger, left trigger and both trigger), what attack comes out depends on what you're doing at the moment. If you're neutral, an attack comes out. If you're dashing forward, another attack comes out. Dashing to the sides, etc. For example, Temjin's strongest normal is dashing forward and using the rifle (I think it's right trigger?). It'll let of two pretty big shots.

Also don't practice against the CPU. You'll inevitable run into Jaguarandi or Z-Gradt, and think the game is busted. They're supposed to be unfair opponents.

Has anyone else played Steeldom? It's like a lower budget, jank version of Virtual On. It's not great, or even good, but I enjoy it for what it is.

>> No.6538913

Isn't the version on Yakuza Kiwami 2 busted in some way? It doesn't feel right at all.

I get a black screen and the game won't start. The romset is OK. I want to play it nao!! I'm using the supermodel 3 emulator with a nifty frontend.

Not from what I could tell, personally.

If it matters, I was talking about the PC version.

>> No.6539121

The arcade version needed them. Console and pc versions don't because the controls were modified for home controllers of the time.

Wasn't the Dreamcast version sold together with the controllers?

>> No.6539724

I was only talking about the first game. Never played the dreamcast sequel so I wouldn't know.

Except you're not playing the arcade version now are you?

>> No.6540076

>>6539652
No, it wasn't. None of the home releases were bundled with twin sticks. Always an optional purchase

>> No.6540185

>>6540068
I play the arcade version through emulation... or used to before version 1.0 of the model 2 emulator dropped a decade or so ago and fucked up twin analog controls. Jumping, turning, ducking/guarding, and even just plain moving all became a pain in the ass, and I haven't bothered to figure out if there was any way to fix this other than try to downgrade to version 0.9. I'd play the pc version, but that is software rendered and likely has some compatibility issues with todays stuff. The powervr version would be nice, if the guy working on the wrapper released it. I don't even want to bother with the Saturn version or the PS2 version.

You've been playing a game too long if you got gud. Winners are always failing something new.

Where the fuck did all these arcade twin stick warriors come from? All the videos of anyone ever good at playing Virtual On games use 360 pads with the single button push layouts because it is more direct to guard cancel, jump, etc. with a single button. In all my years playing the game in the arcade only 1 person ever was able to compete with me, and all others play the arcade twin sticks as a novelty. The best players are amused at best with the arcade setup and bitch about not being able to use Xbox controllers.

>> No.6540995

>>6540992
The best Japanese players use nothing but the twin stick controls. Even the super play DVDs show that.
