I expected an interesting game with 2 world which have neat interactions for puzzles with some fun combat in addition.

I got a buggy block pushing simulator with awful button mashing combat with bland environments & a ridiculous plot which takes its self far too seriously.

Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver is utter trash.

So why didn't you play Blood Omen

What is with this boards boner for this game? Not hating or anything. I've seen it mentioned once or twice before, but on here it's as if it's Zelda/Donkey Kong/Final Fantasy/Etc with how much it's brought up.

>>6533761
Hear that game is suppose to awesome and underrated.

It's underrated and awesome, but still not a great game. The Legacy of Kain franchise got popular because of its insane stories and top tier voice acting*, not because the gameplay was genuinely great.

*ironically the voice acting is so good it makes me lol at how pretentious many of the lines sound, as in: there's a serious disconnect between the quality of the voice acting and the quality of the dialogue.

The dialogue is good and even better when read out loud. Calling something "pretentious" is a faux criticism

>> No.6533985

>>6533845
It's not that the dialogue is bad, but that the writers thought that the dialogue was better than it actually was. It's been years since I last played Defiance (played all minus BO2), but I remember, quite often, thinking "who thought this didn't sound stupid?".

I disagree. Blood Omen has its issues but I think the core of the game is rock solid. The level design is consistently pretty interesting and fun to explore, and the combat -- though clunky -- keeps things interesting with the amount of enemy variety and all the weird spells and items you can use.

I think SR1 is mechanically solid, but the level design is a lot more barren and as a result it's a lot less interesting. It's better than SR2 and Defiance, though.

Yes
that's why i love the franchise
The pretentious dialogue coupled with probably the greatest voice acting in a retro game ever is just the cherry on top
>>6533772
I believe most of it comes from the writing and the voice acting
The voice acting is just incredible
And the writing is basically a bunch of writers pretending to be Shakespeare and trying to ram in as many long words as possible
its cheesy and sounds ridiculous at times
But it has great charm to it
As for bo1
Replace link from Zelda 1 with an edgy vampire
And you got the game

>awful button mashing combat
It involves a lot of timing the combat. Brute force your way will only make you hate the game.
>bland environments
gotta disagree on that chief, the environments are really nice very well presented.
>a ridiculous plot which takes its self far too seriously.
Yeah, this is bait and you are small brain. Fuck you OP.

the dialogue being pretentious is the point of the storytelling, every single character is a celestial being.

Cheese, truly a remarkable thing.

I'm happy I'm not the only person who feels this way. After playing Blood Omen, and having played Ocarina of Time too, Sould Reaver confused and disappointed me on so many levels.

Everyone at Crystal Dynamics should have been fired after that and told to go learn an honest trade like carpentry or glass making or dog walking.

Would've saved us from a bunch of terrible Tomb Raider games too.

It's unironically underrated.
Doesn't make it a great game or series, 8/10 at best.
However it's a lot better than you're saying.
You know how few series would go this far to make a story that takes multiple games to complete? (didn't even complete) or say such utter bullshit lines with such emphasis and passion?

They tried to make a masterpiece with all their heart, that in itself is what art is. Passion.

Defiance is all pretty dull to me. The gameplay and level design are almost as boring as SR2's if not more so, and the story is nothing remarkable. Tony Jay was always worth something, though. There's that.

>> No.6542031

>>6541889
I though the combat in Defiance was the closest the series came to have good combat, but it still didn't quite hit the spot. The level design is the worst in that game though, the spirit forges and Vorador's mansion were horrendous.
