I'm playing homm3 for the first time. It's my first time playing any homm for that matter. I installed the HD mod so I could play full screen on a 1600x1200 monitor. The menu and battle map are really small but the world map is full screen and looks good. Is this the only way it will work? Is there no way to have the battle map in full screen at 1600x1200?

Kinda think the lvl 7 could be an elephant who is immune to moats, can smash walls in melee, and can move through units on the battlefield and damage them while doing so, but it'd be just an elephant; I can't think of a proper mythological creature that fits.

That was an OK map. Starting in the corner where you have to cross half a map's worth of rough would've been bad if the witch hut next to my town hadn't taught pathfinding. That wasn't guaranteed but a pure random occurrence in my favor.
A shame all the border guard stuff and the grail were more trouble than they were worth. There was some good stuff hidden in there, and the grail is always fun. I never even found an entrance to the underground, which is where the grail is in this map.

1) What are the balance changes in Rise of the Elves? is there even a complete changelog? I kinda hoped they fixed the Undead Hordes balance. This ties into my second question:

AFAIK, in Rise of the Elves Wraiths, Deaths and Wights have their initiative lowered to 30 or 40, which means they're much more prone to being nuked before killing whoever can injure them.

Only in sagas, because you can gain much more EXP which scales their damage output exponentially. In regular single-map scenarios, Warrior or Guildmaster heroes are as good or better than the mage.

But you have to get to the point where you manage to level up Initiates into Warlocks (both weak AOE damage dealers) and then into single-target Wraiths which you can then put in melee row. Also, they don't vibe well with Warrior or Nosferatu heroes for different reasons, so the process of leveling them up is laborious.

Pretty much, but the process of leveling all 5 Initiates into Deaths is annoying to say the least. Since in the sagas you usually start with an upgraded Warlock, you can get to a Wraith a bit faster, but then you have to level up 2 pairs of Initiates one after another which is boring and risky if you're dealing with harder parties.

I've also been thinking about a replacement for battles in HOMM, since that seems to be the weakest aspect in the game's formula. Using card mechanics for the fights seems like an obvious an improvement, though I'm not very familiar with card games so I can't say much. I'm sort of drawn to the idea of the battles being in real-time to complement the turn-based movement in the overworld. Something like an RTS with fixed troop amounts.

I'm not against an Egypt faction, Anubis are one of the MM6 monsters like the sea serpent that really should be in HoMM, I just wanted to suggest a different idea. Though I don't see how yet another neutral faction, or putting unalligned units into a faction is an inherently good thing.

As for what a Nordheim faction would add, better Snow themed monsters. The only Tower unit that feels Snowish even slightly is the Gargoyle.

Tower honestly should've been a Desert faction.

cove is all water/move themed, so my bastion would be another neutral misc faction, but desert/move themed

2) When it comes to Disciples, there are basically only two active mods - a Russian one and a Polish one
The Russian one is Hopвeжcкaя Cёмгa mod and is a continuiation of DOM's mod, it focuses on rebalancing the game and adding new items, hero skills and upgrade paths. Lots of immunities were remade into wards, while keeping the spirit of the original (for example Inquisitor still has immunity to paralysis specifically, but only a ward towards general Mind source), all heroes now have double attack (with damage lowered to compensate) so you can attack and then use a potion on the same turn, there are new item class (Relics, uses the same slot as Magic Books), pretty much all items have been reworked, often to include both upsides and downsides instead of just straight upsides. While I disagree with some of the author's choices it's still a pleasant breath of fresh air. Keep in mind though, the mod is managed by 1 guy, so most of the new units are just palette swaps of existing sprites.
You can get it at https://norvezskayasemga.wixsite.com/d2bfwmod - there is an english version, but the translation is a bit shitty, manageable though. This download also includes opengl wrapper that makes the game run much better nadn more stable on newer windows and allolws to adjust game speed, making it look super smooth.

As for the Polish one - it's called "dzieje nevendaar disciples 2", and that's all I know, never tried it myself.

Which is an interesting idea. While mapmaking I've been experimenting with that too when giving each starting different extra dwellings (e.g. two Tier 2 dwellings and one Tier 4 dwelling vs. one Tier 3 dwelling and one Tier 5 dwelling).

In larger maps this choice will become obsolete since you eventually gather enough resources to build both paths. I'm not sure how I feel about this. It could make the town insanely OP in any map above L.

I also suspect that when the town is released, the player community will take less 24 hours to determine which of the two paths is the objectively better one.

I'm pretty suck at this game, but what do people think about Fortress? I see a lot of people think it's bad, while others claim it's good and that everyone else needs to "learn how to play them" but never elaborates on how exactly you do. To me, they seem to have a couple really neat units (like the gorgons and dragonflies) but the rest of their units seem kind of weak or rely on weird effects that never really pay off like petrification or poison (I'm still not sure what this does, 30% of a stack's total health over 3 turns? Or is it 30% of the first unit?), or maybe I'm just unlucky since they rarely seem to activate for me. I guess Oblivion's Edge could slow down a bit without Dimensional Mirror, but it always felt weird.
What's your favourite campaign? (Kind of) recently played through all of the campaigns, starting with SOD (which probably wasn't the best decision, especially picking Hack and Slash). Dragon's Blood, Festival of Life and Dragon Slayer are probably my top 3. Dragon Slayer is a bit repetitive with the map clear (Rust Dragons particularly), but last mission peak ascending was great. Ordwald in Blood of the Dragon Father was a surprising challenge, and Festival is nice mix of time-based solo and fights with AI.
I'm trying to remember if there's any campaign that couldn't qualify as a "power trip" (once you get your uberhero), but the closest are probably ROE small campaigns, which aren't that interesting.

Dragonflies let you have max speed scouts that ignore the swamp terrain penalty very early on.
The town is built of little more than gold, wood, and ore so it's quick to build.
You can build the wyvern dwelling on day 1 or day 2 depending on what you start with to get tier 6 units earlier than any other town.

Probably solo minotaur. If you mean full team then some combination of Minotaurs and Vampires. Neither class scales at all and the Vampire promotion is a pain to finish. Trolls are pretty weak too because of how slow their recovery time is, but they eventually get body building, mace paralyze, and regeneration. Clerics, Necromancers, Knights, and Dragons will make things too easy and Dark Elves have too many utility skills for a harder run.

For alliances the Cleric is much harder than the Necromancer, and the dragon/dragon hunter is the exact same quest. I would go dragon just because then you get the Great Wyrm promotion to murder every single dragon slayer in the zone and the fort.

The bees don't even have a quest in that dungeon, just some items you can turn in for cash. The hive in MM8 was horribly designed.

Merges 6-8 on 8's engine where you can travel between continents and do their respective quests. Carry your party and items over. So it's basically one game with 3 different campaigns.

Some skills can be fixed with a bit of a more "creative" approach to the whole thing I guess; this is what I had in mind for example for "Eagle Eye" - instead of just copying the spell that your opponent casts it would actually *snatch* the spell from their spellbook - like an eagle would snatch it's prey - making the enemy hero no longer have access to it for the remainder of the battle and beyond, until they re-learn it from a Shrine or a Mage's Guild. I just got an idea for a map, but I'm terrible at actually making maps so I'll just drop it here since I feel like sharing it in some way.
It's divided into four equal quarters that are separated from each other by mountains. The first quarter is grass with a rampart player in it. 2nd is swamp with fortress, 3rd snow with tower, 4th rough with stronghold. Each quarter has the basic starting stuff in it: mines, piles of resources, some chests, low level artifacts, neutrals to beat, some dwellings, windmill, water wheel, what have you.
At the center of the map, as far away of the towns as possible, there's an underground entrance. That takes each player to "their own"
small underground place that has a gold mine, some stronger neutral stacks, and a better artifact or two in it. All in their native terrain.
Each of these underground "antechambers" is then connected to the same central room that's the underground terrain type and hosts a neutral dungeon town.
I got as far as creating the terrain, placing the towns, and starting to place mines when I realized I don't have what it takes to make a map like that. Maybe I'll try again some day.

Interference is a flat (magic resistance) bonus instead of a dice roll (spell counter). I assume that by your logic any skill that does that is retarded? also, another thing that I really like is that all of the creatures seem to be quite a bit more "beefy" and ranged units are practically turned into damage support - rarely do you get the chance to simply one shot your opponent (neutral or AI/player) before his army can close the gap on the battlefield and close into melee. Availability of certain "game-breaking" spells, like Slow or Haste is noticeably lower and they are quite harder to obtain and that also helps greatly imo. Leadership and Luck thus play a far greater role and are pretty much a must have and a certain pick if you want to have your army decimate the opponent and not suffer any substantial loses. Moving in a really good direction and I can't wait for it to hit 1.0; the biggest hurdle is the graphics, since it is really hard to replicate that H2 style and for new artwork to fit in without standing out.

Make the exp bonus actually meaningful into something like 50/75/100 or even 100/150/200; at basic it would give you the option to choose between three skills instead of the standard two, advanced would give four choices and expert would give five

In essence, it would work as a form of "delayed necromancy"; it would recover a number of living units after the battle BUT they would be available in your Garrison (free or for recruitment?) after a number of days equal to their level (or something like that), thus in that way representing the actual time that the battlefield medics took to do the triage and give the units time to heal. Depending on your skill level would depend how many units would you be able to save this way. Healing would be entirely related to the First Aid tent, giving it more significance and it could also be useful if depending on the skill level B/A/E it would heal status effects like poison, paralyze, petrify, disease etc. in a way being a spell-free Dispel for certain status effects.
>Ballistics and Artillery
Remove the limit for heroes of ONE single piece of siege equipment; if you want multiple balistas or catapults - go for it. Catapult should also get an aimed shot at units too, not just fortifications - with a splash damage hit field, not much unlike death cloud, while keeping the chance to overshoot the target and hit somewhere near instead - push effect would also be interesting. Adding on above skill, taking multiple First Aid tents would greatly improve the skill and the number of units saved. Also, more War Machines would be neat.

On top of exchanging spells it gives you the option to sequence spells, similarly to how Armor of the Damned or Angelic Alliance cast spells before combat. On Basic you can sequence one, Advanced two and Expert three spells total; but the spells ain't free and you still have to fully pay the SP cost.

Ability to see through above concealment as well, making the skill actually useful. Both concealment and seeing through existed in games like Age of Wonders and would be a good addition to heroes as well imo.
