get a translated version of the original. The music is leagues better in it. The US version sounds like shit in comparison

PS1; The new re-translation seems pretty good and with the halved encounters and double exp it's a more enjoyable experience.

PS2; Play it emulated, there are some hacks that fix bugs and balance some of the issues with the original in a way that isn't overpowered. Phantasy Star II Modernization is a good one from what I've heard.

PS3; Use a bugfix mod

PS4; The original is fine

Thoughts on PS Generations 1 and 2? Is there any translation patch available?

Haven't played them but patches exist. Check RHDN. Currently they don't work on real hardware but there should be new versions soonTM that fix that.

They are good if you can tolerate some unfortunate design choices. But they are best played after original games, because Generations are very different.

Sega ages is my jam right now, just using automap

Honestly, I like them more than the originals.

>> No.6522928

Switch Ages version had I think automapping if you feel you need it and the ability to play FM synth that was cut out of the US version. Localization is still weird like healing items are cola. But it isn't that bad personally.

The rest emulate the Genesis version.

Gameplay wise it is fine but I couldn't stand the art design.

Switch Sega Ages version is definitely the best version of the original, non-remaster. Carry on, anon.

>PS1
The newest retranslation patch bollocksed up the translation big time. Use the previous one, I've slapped it on Mega in case they took it down.

This is without a doubt the best way to experience PS1.
>PS2
There's a half arsed retranslation that fixes some names and adds back some lost NPC dialogue but it's based on the official translation. A very mild improvement, worth going for if you're emulating but fails to run on real hardware. Choosing the original translation over it is not a big deal

>PS3 and 4
Unsure, I've heard only horrible things about the PS4 retranslation and the screenshots back the horror stories up. I don't know if there is anything for 3.

Don't play any gameplay changing hacks, be a man.

Apparently Phantasy Star IV wasn't as well received back in the day as you'd think.
