Loops are dumb as hell (and don't most Cave games have loops anyway?), why would you want to play a 40 minute long game 4 times in a row in one sitting to get to a particular difficulty level? I get why they exist but I can't imagine spending that much time.

Loops are smart in the context of the arcades and often genuinely beneficial for both the players and developers, you can't look at them from the home console/PC perspective because they were not originally made for them. Your runs cost you coins, getting more time with your favorite games is beneficial for you, it gives you a reason to come back after you've mastered early loops so you can work on scoring and compete with others, which means more profit for developers. Console/pc games lack this dynamic, so console shmups rarely have loops as a result.
