Sonic 1 is the actual best Sonic.
The complaints about Marble Zone are nonsensical when you have stuff like Metropolis in Sonic 2, Carnival Night in Sonic 3, and Sandopolis Act 2 in Sonic & Knuckles. In comparison to those, Marble Zone is a fucking precision-platforming masterpiece, and it is

not gonna say Marble and Labyrinth are flawless, but they serve the purpose of immersing you in the other side of the spectrum after the freedom and lack of consequences in Green Hill. They may not be "fast" but there is a flow to them and mastering involves getting a handle on Sonic that Green Hill doesn't train you for. They are important steps to mastering the flow and momentum of Sonic's controls.

As someone who has played every classic Sonic game for hundreds of hours I have to say that 2 has become my least favorite. There is almost too much open ground and speedy sections to the point that it becomes boring. If you've mastered how to make a few major jumps on most stages you can stay on the upper route and end them within 30 seconds. It's not challenging.

Marble Zone is more linear and gives you always opportunities to use momentum, you can bypass a lot of the waiting if you know what you're doing. The 3 Marble acts combined are a lot more fun to play through than Sandopolis Act 1, and Act 2 directly makes Marble Zone look like absolute 10/10 level design in comparison.

I know this is an ancient shitpost but it's interesting to see the level design differences between Mario and Sonic and consider that both have always been critically acclaimed. Mario always has way more levels that are shorter and flatter and Sonic has much fewer levels that typically have three tiers of height with the bottom one basically being a punishment. You'd think that such different designs would lead to one being seen by most as superior and overtaking the other but they both coexisted just fine.

This is true. People who complain about Sonic 1 "not being fast" have two issues: 1) they don't get it 2) they suck

1) Sonic 1 was never about going fast all the time. It's about going fast when you need to, and figure out how to go fast and what the level design expects you to do; in order to reach more rewarding parts of the levels that can only be reached by going fast.
Of course, you can very well play it all slow, and never reach the areas that require you to go fast, generally sticking to the lower areas of the levels. But those areas are generally less rewarding, and reaching the "speed required" areas is a reward by itself as well.
2) These players never paid attention to the level design, and if they did, didn't have the skill to pull off what was required with the speed and the controls.
