Hey guys, I'm looking for nice 4 player games to play with children;
I work in a daycare, and with the covid craze, most board games, and our usual activities are out of the question, so I thought a videogame tournament would be a neat activity. And since all I have is a piece of shit old laptop and crappy usb snes controllers, I've been looking for retro games.
So far I'm thinking about :
-Bomberman (they're loving bomberman world on mame, but I think I'll try one of the more advanced versions, with the bomb kicking and stuff)
-Re-Volt (RC-junior mode works fine for them)
-Micro-Machines 64 (only n64 game that emulates fine on my shitty laptop it seems)

So I'm looking for games that do not contain violent imagery, are easy to pick up and play and play fine with 6 button controllers (not counting select/start)
Is there something akin to "combat" on atari 2600 I could check out ? With 4 player support. I'm thinking some rudimentary deathmatch game would be fun. Or maybe something like scorched earth/death tank ?
Anything fun you recommend ? thanks in advance

On the SNES, I recommend Bomberman 5, since it's the most advanced one and has an english translation patch on the romhacking website.

You can also try Top Gear 3000 and Micro Machines 2.

Here's a list of games for the SNES: https://nintendo.fandom.com/wiki/Super_Multitap

The only retro games kids play at my house are arcade (mame)
Checkmate, Snow Bros 2, and Trog support 4 players, also several fighters but maybe they're more violent than you want -
Crime Fighters, D. D. Crew, Bucky O'Hare, Spider-Man, The Simpsons, Vendetta, X-Men, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Turtles in Time

Thanks I'll check out Super Bomberman 5

Checkmate looks real interesting, but I'm afraid the graphics are a little too rudimentary. Any other light cycle style game you might recommend ?
Might check out Trog and Snow Bros. As for fighting games, they already played through both TMNT games as well as the simpsons and they loved them so I'll keep your recs in mind.

There's several co-op Bomberman games you could try. There's the earlier Bomberman arcade game (4 players) that came out a year before World (from Irem). There's also Neo Bomberman on Neo Geo (2 players), Staturn Bomberman on Sega Saturn (2 players), and Super Bomberman 1, 3, 4, and 5 (2 players too). You said 4 players, so perhaps the children can take turns with that, but the battle modes are 4 player.

Co-op games are fine. But to be honest, for the little tournament I have in mind, I'd like to find a few competitive games. Cutthroat but lighthearted, like bomberman or micro machines.

Here are some lists of 4-player games for SNES and Genesis:

Could help maybe? I dunno. I guess it's mainly sports games? Surely at least a few of those could be appropriate.

Job doesnt pay that well, and if I had a better job, I wouldnt even need to get a console to play with them, wouldnt I ?
>>6517828
I'm not sure about sports games, I want games that are fast to play. Kids get bored easy, and I dont want to keep them waiting around, but thanks for the links.

Sunset Riders, very fun and only about as violent as a western cartoon.

Mayhap some variety could introduce a time trial test on something like Mega Man.
Mega Man is fairly simple, and people could take turns trying to get through a stage under a certain time limit.
For that, I would recommend Mega Man 1 or 3, as 1 is the simplest of all the games and 3 has a small bit of complexity to go with it, if the kids aren't absolutely retarded

How about Super Mario Kart (snes), is it not 4 player?

>> No.6518805

>>6518286
Nope, two players.
>>6518045
That's an interesting idea, but that would mean 1 kid playing while 11 others are sitting twiddling their thumbs, even if the runs are short, having 12 of them go through is going to take some time. Not to mention I'll have to sanitize the controller between every run.
>>6517867
Heh, yeah, sunset riders is pretty fun. Might add that to the games they can play outside of the tournament.

The issue is that I'd have to sanitize the keyboard and mouse between every turn. It'd be a nightmare.

Tank Force (arcade) has a 4 player version
Escape Kids (Asia, 4 Players), seems to be all English, although I can't see young kids being able to enter their initials before time runs out, not that it's necessary (each player is a different color) or buy a power up, but might be fun anyway - change difficulty to "Most Easy" in BIOS

These look super neat, I'll check em out.

I'm a bit surprised I can't find a 4 player version of atari 2600 combat/Tank.
Seems like a classic that should've been remade/emulated countless times !
