So what's the consensus on the Sega Master System?

Seems like 90% of the library was also on Genesis with much better controls and graphics. Outside a few key titles I don't really see the point. Don't get me wrong I'm a Sega guy, but at least there was a huge variety between NES and SNES to separate the two.

to add to my last post, I am also a huge fan of you being able to just hop into a dungeon and if you're not supposed to be there you can get your shit pushed in. I went into the dungeon south of Scion just after getting Odin and was trying to just do some looting and was getting smoked. So I did some 80's montage tier grinding and was able to come back into the joint and just take everything to pound town. Also, found iron claw and that shit makes myau a fuckin pimp.

The Master System was popular but not the most popular.
I think one key factor is that it was cheaper more often than the NES was. It went on sale more frequently. I think this meant a lot of poorer (or more miserly) families had it. They were probably more like to swap and share games so it played into your favor to have one if a lot of other kids you knew did.
I had a Master System and I noticed for certain that a lot of my fellow owners were of a more musty caliber than the high-rolling NES kids. The NES gained an aura of prestige. It's games had a seal of quality and everything.

This, though on one hand I find it really fucking funny. Tonka was the one to distribute in america, and Tonka called it the "Sega system" in some SKUs, which is where the attempt to force the meme even comes from. Why it's funny to me is that so many things are arbitrarily referred to by branding names based on where the person is from, or by what it was called in that market, that it actually makes a little sense for this guy to go on and on about why this system isn't called what it was called in some models of release in one given country. What I'm saying is, so many games or systems get called shit that was just one market's name for it, what's really the difference? Like when birdo gets called a tranny just because the US manual for Mario 2 said "a boy who thinks he is a girl" to avoid accusations of video games promoting or condoning domestic violence. Similarly, Poison got the exact same treatment, and even though Final Fight directors have since said they never made her a man or imagined her being a guy, we somehow have this reality pushed that because a US market thing said it, it MUST be true. Most 25+ years old frenchies have fond memories of Sega platforms, that's why the two latest Wonder Boy games and the Streets of Rage sequel were all developed by french studios.

The Master System version of Sonic 1 isn't even acknowledged by Yuzo, he only ever mentions the GG version (which is better as it has more graphical details/colours, a proper splash screen, and better designed screen layout despite the smaller resolution).

Not a consensus but I feel it's pretty lackluster. There are a handful of good games on it, sonic 1 is the best sonic. Shmups are pretty good on it, it has it's charm, but it's not really that great overall. It's not shit, but it's not great, just decent.

Nah, he's just trying to trigger European Master System fans, but it's not really working because Sonic 1 is only superficially better on GG but also got its game design dumbed down in several ways in the process so as to be playable on the handheld.

It's sort of like Bangai-O N64 vs. DC, if you want an enhanced audio/visual experience, play it on DC; if you want it to be less easy, play it on N64.

I bought 3 of them for like ten bucks. Two originals and a version 2. I never had one as a kid but my friend did (Australia) who was a fag who'd invite me to play then hog it.

I like Alex Kidd and Fantasy Zone a lot.
Everything else is garbage.
I also played California Games a bunch (too much) purely in order to monopolise the high score table when my friend in university brought his in.

Years later Chinese Adidas paid me to make a crappy Flash ripoff of the hacky sack minigame. Angelababy was involved but nobody invited me to the photoshoot day because they were all fucking assholes.
