Pretty much all my life I've kept hearing how genesis has the best shmups, however, how good are genesis shmups really? I mean, SNES has axelay, un squadron, R-rype 3 and super aleste; what does the genesis have of shmups?

>> No.6498936

It has some arcade ports like Darius, but you're better off just emulating the arcade version for those. (although I'm not sure if they ever got Darius running right on emulation)

There's more quantity on the Genesis/Mega Drive than the SNES for sure, and to its credit its technically got two Compile shmups instead of the one SNES has (Musha Aleste and Robo Aleste).
Also recommend Thunder Force 3 and 4/Lightning Force, Trouble Shooter and Trouble Shooter Vintage, Gleylancer, Bari-Arm, Lords of Thunder (both Sega CD), Gaiares, best console port of Air Buster, etc.

All of those suck though. Axelay has nice graphics going for it and nothing else, UN Squadron is poorly designed casual bullshit, R-type 3 is the worst in the series by far and Super Aleste is the worst Shmup Compile ever did, it's like Blazing Lazers brutally retarded cousin they keep locked up in the attic.

Yes that's why I used Blazing Lazers as an example of a good Shmup. I find Bullet Hell style Shmups really nice to look at but not play. They seem more concerned with filling the screen with as many bullets as possible instead of giving unique battles with enemy types that play well off of each other and the only difference I feel between the stage and boss section is that the screen stopped scrolling, there's no sense of pacing so even when they try their hardest, boss encounters just come off as very underwhelming and blend in wit the rest of the game. I also do not like how they give you back all your powerups after dying, it makes collecting them in the first place seem pointless, might as well just have the player powered up from the start. Respawning where you die trivializes the difficulty and removes the tension that is there in more Classic style Shmups though it is true that some of those games are guilty of checkpoints that made it near impossible to recover.

>> No.6499280

>>6498915
The SNES shmups couldn't handle very many objects (ships, bullets) on the screen at one time - kind of the whole point of the genre. The Genesis was almost twice as powerful as the SNES, think of it like an overclocked SNES. Genesis shmups were a better experience overall.

All SNES games had performance/responsiveness problems due to the fact that Nintendo for whatever reason did not allow direct access to the hardware unlike Sega, this is why the Genesis versions of games always play better and are faster. PC games also do not allow direct access to the hardware but they are powerful enough that it doesn't make a difference, for an early 90s console though it is definitely significant.

Not really, have you seen the huge difference in games released in the afterlife of these two consoles? SNES doesn't even compare due to how uptight Nintendo are about their systems being modified and explored. Enhancement chips for the cartridges because a system released two years later has half the CPU power than the Genesis. You can't make this up. Lol, SNES can't do this neither https://youtu.be/_vB_COFuYPU

Super SWIV (Firepower 2000 in burgerland) is a great shooter that can sometimes throw a lot of shit at you with no slowdown. It also has two vehicles that play differently.

Mega Drive got a PAL-only Mega SwIV but despite having an extra level it's inferior in my opinion.
