Aside from on actual/modded hardware, what's everyone's favourite way to play gameboy games? I beat Link's Awakening recently through retroarch on my couch and had a fun time but am I missing the appeal of the handheld experience? I know a lot of people like the 3DS for its gameboy lineup but I can't really get around the weak dpad

Modded original hardware with a flash cart is the best way in my opinion.

This IPS screen took me about 20 minutes to install, and I am an absolute novice with a soldering iron.

Running GB Interface on a Gamecube is good enough for me atm, but I definitely wanna get a Super Famicom with the Super Gameboy 2 someday (I don't want to mod my SNES for Famicom-shaped carts because the fact that they don't fill the entire slot and leave gaps on the sides triggers me).

Maybe someday, but I'd rather just get a SGB2 instead of modding an original. I wouldn't have to cut the shell, and I want a Super Famicom anyways for Japanese games. Also I think the SGB2 looks cooler, that transparent blue broooooo

>the handheld experience
Unless you plan on spending the money on getting a backlit screen, the majority of the experience is shifting the handheld around trying to find the perfect viewing angle. The rest of the experience is playing a game with controls designed for the hands of little children, only to have to quit when the batteries run dry.

The most enjoyable way to play GB games is on the SNES with a Super Gameboy. Large and easy to see screen, some games have enhancements, and the SNES controller is far more comfortable than a handheld.

>> No.6499294

>>6498443
You have a point about the IPS screens, but the newer kits are so inexpensive and easy to install it's not even a big deal to do it yourself to a gameboy you already own.
DMG and Color are both comfy as fuck and I have man sized hands. Pocket is where it starts getting cramped.
>The most enjoyable way to play GB games is on the SNES with a Super Gameboy. Large and easy to see screen
Oh yeah cause Gameboy games look great stretched across a tv or monitor.
I keep several pairs of batteries charged so I can swap out if I run out during playing, which rarely happens because I don't spend 8 hours consecutively playing gameboy games.

Classic GBA has the best ergonomics of any handheld, and i despite what it seems, the battery life is actually doubled with the backlit screen compared to the original.

Technology is so far advanced from what it used to be that a backlit screen today uses less battery than a nonbacklit screen 20 years ago, theyre a lot more efficient.

I personally play them on the PSP, which I find has very decent GB/GBC emulation. I also have a Game Boy Player for the GameCube, but haven't used it in a while. I would say that's a pretty comfy way to play if you can get your hands on one.

>>6499508
>>6500007
I never liked my GBA, and that was mostly due to the lack of a backlit screen. I found it much harder to see what was on the screen compared to the monochrome screen on my original Gameboy, which I actually went back to. But I did always find the GBA really comfy, so I'm tempted to do one of these mods. I just need to retrieve the console from the friend I "lent" it to 4 years ago.

IMO the best way to play these on an actual TV is the MISTER. Sure you can play through almost anything with these games. I used to do the super gameboy, emulating on a wii, gameboy player etc. All work fine, but the MISTER seems to play them damn well without going through the work of consolizing a system or fucking with weird borders etc.

For on the go, I simply have the original systems with everdrives for them. If I'm playing on the go, it's at lunch break at work, in a very well lit area so backlighting isn't needed in any way. If I want backlight, I just play the gameboy games on a gba sp.
