What are your favorite 80s arcade games?

>> No.6487216

Typical answer, but it's always been Galaga. I played that game to death when I was a kid. Never could get very far without using a credit though

Have you ever played Gaplus? I like that one. It's like Galaga but you can tractor beam enemies to your side for extra firepower

No, I haven't. Truth be told I haven't even heard of it until now! I'll have to try that out one of these days while the stay at home order is still in place. Does the-eye have arcade roms? I can't get my hands on a copy of it obviously, so I'm going to have to opt for piracy.

Now that you mention it though the tractor beam mechanic does sound familiar, so maybe I played it as a kid? Can't say I remember. Is it harder than Galaga?

here's a MAME full set: https://archive.org/download/mame0221_rom
I don't think it's harder per se, the enemies are faster and more frantic but the enemy capturing balances it out

>> No.6487247

>>6487152
Probably galega or araknoid

>> No.6487323

Good thread topic. Probably Mario Bros for me. A fair and forgiving game that's pretty dope with 2 players.

>> No.6487529

Early 80s probably wizard of wor

Wizard of Wor is a fantastic little title, played the shit out of this compilation (and the second one) back in the naughties.
>>6487323
I had M. Bros on the Atari 7800 and was a favourite of mine

Might load up MAME right now and have a go

Pic related is probably my favorite but Joust, Ms. Pac, and Frogger are right up there

>> No.6487714

Early 80s or 80s in general? That's a tough one. It could be Shinobi or R-Type.

Somewhat off the top of my head…

Alien Syndrome
Black Tiger
Crystal Castles
Forgotten Worlds
Gain Ground
Hyperdyne Sidearms
Moon Cresta
Power Drift
R-Type
Strider
Xenophobe

There’s one more game that’s in my head, but I can’t remember the name of. Early 80s space shooter in the vein (and period) of Space Invaders and Galaxian. You faced maybe a half dozen waves of different kinds of enemies (not Gorf,) one stood out in particular because they (looked like) TIE Fighters from Star Wars.

Zoo Keeper is way fucking underrated
1. It's fun as fuck
2. It's like the first game ever to have modern jumping controls where you can move your guy around in the air despite the game being like barely a platformer
3. Made by Taito but everything about it just screams Williams, from the graphics to the sound to the twitchy frantic gameplay
It's just a really fun game

Either Outrun or Space Harrier, SEGA really kicked ass mid 80s-90s in the arcades

>> No.6489876

>>6489816
The game also has pretty explicit unexplicit sex after the bonus rounds
A curtain drops and some hearts appear, pretty standard for 80s arcade sex, except it's an EXCESSIVE number of hearts, like they really wanted you to know they were fuckin

>3. Made by Taito but everything about it just screams Williams, from the graphics to the sound to the twitchy frantic gameplay
It was made by Taito America. It's not a japanese game, so It might had people from Williams in its development.

Super Off Road

Local hockey rink had it, Galaga, and a pinball machine in the lobby. We would get in a 3-player race before every practice.
