I don't know the context of that tweet, but everyone should know by now that the biggest mainstream media companies are owned by a handful of people who quite literally control what the public sees. If people see pointing that out as some kind of dog whistle, then they have already been brainwashed and are just mindlessly protecting the "puppet masters".

That's also part of the Deus Ex worldbuilding. Just one big loop feeding itself. Page Industries paying money for lobbyists, lobbyists influence politics, politicians make the laws that benefit Bob Page. One of the many reasons why Deus Ex is so great. Playing it too much like an FPS is out the question anyway. Denton's aim is just too shitty before you upgrade his augs. And that's probably my biggest pet peeve about the game. Without his upgrades, he has the aim of a granny who's being shown how to shoot for the first time. I know they couldn't make it too good from the start, so you'd be incentivized to get upgrades, but they just overdid it.

>> No.6487325

I can expect some sorta consistency or realism. Denton should not have the sort of shitty aim before upgrades and that just fucks with my immersion. There are other ways you can force the player to play less like in a classical FPS if you really have to. Also, I thought the game was famous for offering the player various equally viable tactical approaches, so which is it?

And like I said, that's not a good excuse. The different tactical approaches should stand on their own without making one less viable than the other. A true realistic shooter shouldn't even have a crosshair located at the middle of the screen making bullets hit the same spot like a machine every time you shoot. But that's what games do and at least they added a time for that to happen and upgrades to make the game half realistic and even less fun in your case

>> No.6487481

>>6487468
You have to be trolling at this point, right? Someone who knows how to shoot shouldn't take the amount of time Denton does to aim when standing still, or need augmentations to improve on that. That should be taken care of by basic training.

I'm not saying he should be perfectly accurate or anything. Just maybe have his default level be like the first level upgrade for it to be realistic.

The crosshair part is not a valid contention either. I know it's superficially not realistic to have a visual cue like that, but there is something called kinesthesia that is impossible to model in games. In real life, even if you're aiming from the hip, you have a general - and far better than in a game, crosshair or not - idea of where your barrel is pointing. A crosshair is not a bad approximation of that.

There's no basic training for the player. What makes the game more realistic is the fact that the player can learn with the character as he goes. It is better this way. Pic related, but here goes anyway.

>Having an experienced character from the start would be like cheating.

If having a character with ANY sort of experience is cheating then you should start as a civilian or peasant. If you use a weapon, it should be like your character is shooting or swinging for the literal first time in his life, because "[t]here's no basic training for the player".

Why stop there? Why isn't it cheating if the character already knows how to walk or speak when you start playing?

It's obvious from the setting that Denton wasn't some rube they picked off the street and prepped for nano-augmentation and deployed him without further preparation. He obviously had some sort of training that should have resulted in him knowing how to use a weapon better than he does.

Do you have any idea how fucking ridiculous that is? I've never read anyone argue starting as a level 1 fighter or wizard, as opposed to a level 0 peasant, is cheating in an RPG.

It's not like Denton is a peasant. This is you talking through your ass. The basic training he had shouldn't give him necessary abilities to start the game in a way that no upgrade would be required. This is the same for other abilities not just shooting.

Did you ever played RPGs? The idea is to gain points as you progress getting more abilities and improving your skill. Every RPG starts their character like shit, sometimes without weapons or magic, till you get the hang of it. But you also get easier enemies at first so it's not a problem. If you don't have the patience for this I recommend you to play Doom or Quake, and even on those games you might get shit weapons at first but not as bad as Deus Ex because these games are not RPG

If you start as a wizard in an RPG, you already know some spells. If you start as a fighter, you are already PROFICIENT in some or most weapons. Denton is sort of like a wizard when it comes to using weapons, but without the magic and other shit one gets in return, until he's heavily augmented.

Also, don't tell me what games to play and not play. When the game starts Denton aims like he's handicapped and there is no realistic, nor even a compelling gameplay reason, to justify that. You will realise the same once you take those nostalgia goggles off.

Well, does he? The skill level is very literal. If he is "trained" that means he isn't very good. He picked up a gun and fired it a bit at a range for maybe a day or two. If you invest until Master then you got pinpoint accuracy.

>That should be taken care of by basic training.

In universe, the "basic training" is what you choose on the intro screen. JC could choose to be an explosives and hacking expert, or a fire arms expert, or whatever. His job is infiltration and suppression through any means. You choose how. You can pour all your skillpoints into Advanced pistol or rifles if you want to, but you'll be lacking in everything else.

>> No.6488146

>>6488116
>He picked up a gun and fired it a bit at a range for maybe a day or two.

That's only being "trained" by a deliberately loose interpretation of the word. You have to show more aptitude than he has without augmentations if you wanna get a CCW license. And this guy is a fucking cop, so if anything he should reasonably be expected to know more as part of his job.

>> No.6488329

>>6488146

He's an expert at whatever you want him to be. So whatever you pick on the intro screen to put your starting skills in is exactly what JC was doing during his academy days. You can roll a JC who's an advanced marksman from the get-go but you're going to be less skilled in everything else. That's a sacrifice. Alternatively you can make a JC who is an expert at hacking and picking locks and swimming, but not anything else. Is that realistic? No way. That's pure Role Playing Game logic. And Deus Ex at its core is an RPG.

You can in DnD and other table top games roll a thief who is god awful at combat, but he's an expert at infiltration. He can pick locks, he can scale walls, he can disarm traps, he can sweet talk his way out of getting caught.

I think the problem is you're thinking of Deus Ex as a shooter when it's really an RPG that just happens to be in first person with guns. It's not a shooter with some dialogue trees and skills, it's an RPG in first person. If the game was in Ye Old Fantasy setting it might be more clear, since we associate the RPG genre with fantasy rather than futuristic sci-fi.

You're using hyper realistic thinking on a game that clearly operates on video game and rpg logic. JC doesn't have to be a wizard at all, a JC who can't shoot is a thief or something else. JC can be a support unit to heavy hitters like Anna or Gunther. In the Castle Clinton mission, you could be the sneaky thief who goes around through the back, and fires not a single shot while it's Anna who takes the front.

You don't have to fire a single bullet in the entire game to beat it. Talking, sneaking, explosives, and other means are all you need. I believe the game only forces you to kill Anna Navara and Gunther. And all the bosses are real damn weak to planted LAMs.
