Look, I played Valkyrie Profile on my PSX in like 2000 when it came out. I loved it then, but I knew it ran likes hit. The visuals are great, but they pushed the PSX too far. It gets really choppy at times. I distinctly remember discussing that with my friends in 2000. It honestly plays a lot better at 60 fps.

vp is honestly the most based jrpg I've played to date, no idea how it gets less hype than most other ps1 jrpgs (i know its because it was a late-era title that competed directly with ff9 and is an uncommon/expensive title to buy etc)

I wish I could appreciate VP but I always end my playthroughs relatively early in the game.
I love the combat, the art, the music, the story, the difficulty... but having to sacrifice items and, most importantly, characters I've grown attached to is way too much for me to enjoy the game.

I guess it's just not for me.

No advertising when it was new, and in later years it seemed to make it to most of the hidden gems lists but with few people actually picking it to play. I'm glad I had some megadorks in my friend circle back then that showed it to me, otherwise I never would have known about it. Anecdotally I don't think I ever saw it in a rental store, and didn't last long on the shelves to buy either, so it ran pretty cold in traditional fanbase making time from what I could see.
