It’s better than SCIV

>> No.6482037

True. However SCIV has more SOUL

>> No.6482036

I like how experimental it is. SC4 feels very been-there-done-that except now with weird looking mode 7 effects which make it look like some levels take place inside a roll of toilet paper. Also it's very easy.

I like both, but I would say I prefer IV overall. Bloodlines is great but the level design can be a little heavy-handed with gimmicks.

This, Bloodlines has great music (as always with the series), and a cool concept of traveling through Europe, but the level design is hit or miss.
It's usually very easy on the platforming, and has very little of it. The last level is pure gimmicks. People love to complain about the rotating room on IV, but Bloodlines is loaded with gimmick shit.
Not a big fan of the boss fights either.

Not really.
Yes, you can't control your jump mid-air BUT you can still change your position mid-air (you can whip left or right), so there you have the first difference.
Then another major change, which was already in Rondo, is that you can jump on stairs.
The jump also has its share of weirdness, such as being able to clip through platforms and not needing to calculate the jump arc, most noticeable on the tower of pisa part with the Medusa heads. You don't need to make jump arcs, because you can just clip through the platforms and land on the upper ones by just jumping. Not sure if this was intentional or an oversight.

Yeah, it's very silly. I don't hate the idea (even though it looks goofy), but what I hate about it the most is that the fight is very boring. The boss has a large amount of i-frames you have to sit through.
Generally, I was not a fan of the boss fights in this game. Too many mid-bosses that aren't even fun to fight, halting the pace of the game. Some of them look cool (like the weird 2-faces guy on Versailles, and the Moth, also on Versailles), but then the majority of them are boring knights and stuff like that, not memorable, and boring to fight.

>> No.6482229

>The boss has a large amount of i-frames you have to sit through.

The only i-frame he has is during his intro when he shows up and wen he flashes at some point. It's really not that much.

The rest aren't i-frames, you have to aim though, depending on how high/low his heart ball is.

There are several animations like that, not sure which one you're referring to

If you're referring to the jump, that's only because his arms may be hit you during that animation, but it's not a i-frame, you can use subweapons for instance

If you're referring to how at some points he gets mad and rolls on the ground, hitting it during that animation is actually your safest way to dodge that if you're playing with Morris

The only boss with lot's of i-frames really is the flying one at Pisa, since he can't be hit when he's flying in front of the tower

I don't know if this is an australian bait, but both games are different. Bloodlines is a short and intense arcade game while SCIV is a slow-paced, amotspheric action adventure. Different tastes depending of your mood.

Agree. I was a Sega kid, but Bloodlines looks very bad for a 1994 game. Revenge of Shinobi looks miles better and it was released in 1989, and Gunstar Heroes and Shinobi III are from 1993.
Konami made good games on the Genesis but they never cared much about the art.

Then another major change, which was already in Rondo, is that you can jump on stairs.
All of what you mentioned is also present in the other 4th gen castlevanias. As I said, overall even if its still naturally different than the original games, compared to the other 4th genvanias it is the one that introduces the least new mechanics, as Rondo/4 have all the new things of Bloodlines and a couple share of their own added mehanics. Therefore I can not agree with the comment of how "experimental" it is when it is the least experimental of the 4th gen Castlevania games, specially if you consider how it is structured, with 6 linear levels.

>> No.6482836

I'm not fond of Bloodlines. I know it's the hipster choice now that Rondo and X68k are not cool anymore on /vr/, but I don't like the focus on set pieces and the visual tricks are distracting

Both IV and Bloodlines are good games, but it's interesting to scrutiny them. Only IV gets the scrutiny, probably because of its popularity, but when it comes to mechanic changes and difficulty, there's a lot to be said about Bloodlines too.
>>6482680
>badly designed gimmicks
I found the gimmick parts of Bloodlines to be worse. The whole final level of BL is a gimmick (mundane, non-difficulty platforming with wacky screen tearing effects or inverted gravity). At least IV's last level is pure CV platforming-action
>boring enemy design and enemy placement that doesn't care if the player can trivialize most of it with basic moves
This is overblown, and there's many enemies in the game placed specifically to use the diagonal whip. Also, at least IV doesn't let you trivialize gameplay by jumping on stairs, or OP powerups that fill the whole screen.

Here

Also note that by default Lecarde's spear deals about 40% less dmg to Medusa so it's supposed to last that much longer; except that Medusa is weak to the axe, if you use it on the last hit it deals as much dmg as Morris would, as Medusa is weak to the axe

You could also just stand them and do jump+axe at the right timing, every time, without needing to move; but that uses too many gems for my liking

I know this thread is meant to be a console war one and that we are supposed to pick a camp. I prefer IV, but also like Bloodlines. What's wrong with the 2nd loop of IV? It adds a bunch of more enemies in every level. Enemies from level 6 appear already on level 1 on the 2nd loop.
The shit 2nd loop was the one in Castlevania 1. I don't even remember if it added any actual significant number of extra enemies, and levels 5 and 6 are exactly the same as the first run.
