6477907 No.6477907 [Reply] [Original]

So I dug out all of my own consoles and found all of my old PSX games, but the only thing I have to play them on is my old PS2. I've heard a lot of negative feedback about playing PS1 games on a PS2 so should I buy a new PS1 to get the best possible experience or is the PS2 good enough?

>> No.6477920

>>6477907
I never had any issues but if you have a first gen PS3 even better

>> No.6477923

It's fine.
Later PS2 Slim models have worse compatibility with some games due to altered hardware.

>>6477907
If you have a fat PS2 from 3XXXX to 5XXXX series and you play from CDs (not from USB/HDD/SMB) you are good to go. There are only about 20 games which glitch or don't work with this setup, neither of which is a major hit or hidden gem.

okay, was mostly going to be playing jrpgs on it, bof3/4, ff9, the chrono trigger port i have

>> No.6477978

>>6477967
Early PS2 models had problems with one of FF compilations (4 or 5, don't remember), the graphics would corrupt on save screen. Original PSX jrpgs don't have issues on late fat models.

should be fine. i think the other anon is referring to final fantasy V on ps1. ff4 and ct should be fine. you can also increase the disc speed for ps1 games, making the loading a bit more bearable.

>>6477907
The only drastic issue I ever ran across was my PS2 fat not reading certain discs, even though they're in perfect condition. Everything else is a whiny nitpick.

>> No.6478035

The one serious issue I did encounter on PS2 is that Metal Gear Solid could freeze at the end of credits before epilogue phone call. It can be fixed bizarrely by inserting a second controller.

load the disc up normally on your fat ps2, then play with your ps2 system upside down (same with some ps1 units) and it might work.

PS1 games run identically on PS2. Its not emulation, its real, physical hardware. If you run PS1 games on PS3 its emulation, and its an emulator from over a decade ago. I'd recommend just using a PC emulator if you want to go that route.

>>6478002
This is the same for me. I have completely scratched to shit copies of Shikigami II and Ridge Racer V that only play (and play well) on my fat.

It has real hardware, but when it comes to certain games, there are still a few issues that didn't exist on the original PlayStation. It's not a very large amount of them, though.

Sure, it wasn't an official term, but people did use PSX all the time.

PSX is an official term though. Problem is, PSX isn't a PS1. It's a PS2 integrated into a video recorder. This was actually the first instance of the Playstation console UI you would see used in the PSP, PS3, Vita, and PS4 but that's besides the point. PSX simply is not PS1, it's a different product that can play PS1 games.

The issue stems from the fact that the PS2's emotion engine (the GPU) is generating the graphics, ostensibly through emulation of the PS1 GPU. Only the CPU from the PS1 exists in the PS2. this results in a small number of games exhibiting minor graphical glitches, such as symphony of the night.

It's a text thing. Nobody has ever said it out loud. If you do it appears behind you in the mirror, with a blood soaked dualshock and it leans forward, its lid trembling. ta-ta-ta-ta. ta-ta-ta-ta-ta. The laser pick up whirrs and slides down the rail "vrrrrt-" As the lights flicker on, it lets out a noise. The grey monster beckons to you It's PS1 you fuck. Then it disappears.

Or so they say, that's the legend after all.

it's the codename for the system, it was used absolutely everywhere except official marketing materials (post-release)
it was the working name before release, it's seen literally everywhere in development tools and many game sources, and even past release it was used by damn near everyone as an abbreviation for the system
note that while it's use was commonly written, it was not common to say it out loud ("playstation" was more common)
"PS" and "PS1" serve the same purpose, but are less common, and seem to be made up out of confusion over why PSX has an X in it (it stood for experimental)

>> No.6481846

>but are less common
The opposite has been true for over 10 years now. PS1 is much more commonly used over PSX, and PSX in time will fall to the wayside as a bit of trivia and a janky DVR in a few decades time.

Magazines in Europe often had "PSX" on the top of the cover where the list of systems covered was. I also read it often in articles.
PS-X was the codename of the PlayStation, that's where it comes from.
