I'd say try the 10th Anniversary version of 2. The quality of life additions make it much more enjoyable. 2's original messaging system is easy to miss because it doesn't make sound when something happens, it just increments a number at the bottom of the screen that's easy to miss.

Actually I used my Amiga 1200 way into the 2000s. After too years of saving money I finally went from my unaccelerated 14 MHz Amiga to a Mac Book Pro in 2008. But now after two MacBooks it's time to leave Apple behind too, since their hardware, software and treatment of customers has become shit (fuck Apple and fuck Microsoft too). Currently I'm in the planning stages for some Business laptop (I still haven't decided which one), but it certainly needs a removable battery and easy access to the other components too. Also once more no Windows (bad enough that I have to work with that garbage), but rather some Linux distro (again I still haven't decides which one).

Because the whole "Clash of Civilisations" by Huntington is one of the most retarded theories in modern sociology. The boundaries he set, along with "civilizations", are utterly arbitrary, too, and show barely a glancing knowledge about various regions of the world. Kazakstan being former USSR? Totally Orthodox! Japanese on the economic bubble rise? Totally separate sivilisation, utterly dislodged from Confucianism or Buddhism. Buddism being a thing? Let's lump three different flavours of it together (that's akin of throwing Jews, Catholics and Muslims together, because they are following Abrahamic religions)! And everything is strict and according to national borders... unless Africa, because who cares!
Generally speaking, that whole bullshit theory got discredited by academia within months after being published... but the super-simplified landscape it created was oh so catchy for Anglosaxon politicians that it entered political discourse for almost 15 years, fucking up diplomatic relations like you wouldn't believe.

Also, what this map is missing is so-called "lonely places". Huntington got 2: Ethiopia, which in his actual theory isn't African (and obviously isn't Islamic, he at least knew that much) and... Turkey. That's right. Since the whole theory was crafted in '93, Turkey was a (relatively) secular state that happend to have Muslim population. This totally and fully convinced Huntington that they aren't just a variation of Islamic, they are a separate things, because somehow the situation when writing an essay about this bullshit was more important, than historical context of previous 700 years.... and only in case of Turkey.
Magic.
Early 90s was just beaming with all kind of similar bullshit, since suddenly sociologists couldn't just write on the merits of western civilisation and/or capitalism or shit on Soviets and their system, as the Cold War ended with a wet fart. Some were ecstatic, like Fukuyama, who declared the final victory of liberal democracy (and then 9/11 happend) OR, like Huntington, decided to fabricate new enemies, if the old ones were suddenly best friends (you probably can't recall how golly were the relations with newly-emerging Russian Federation back in the day, but some people instantly assumed everything is going to just continue in the best possible direction)
Generally speaking anything written between '90 and '00 when it comes to geopolitics is more dated than any other piece of information from the rest of 20th century. Let me reitterate - Cold War stuff or mid-30s praises to Hitler as "peace-loving" are less dated then stuff from the 90s.

The "campaign" is simply a mess. You have 2 kinds of campaign: each nation has a 3 missions mini-campaign to familiarise with it, then you have the "main" campaign against the Dark Tribe, where you keep switching the nation you are playing as and it's a combination of being too short (12 missions in total, most of which can be finished in 2 hours each) and too simple (short from 2 missions with arbitrary handicaps, the rest is piss-easy). The expansion pack is also underwhelming, since the balance is off and the number of mission is again limited to bare minimum
Compared to 3, that's a MASSIVE step-down, because the difficulty bar is in the "meh, too easy, boring" territory for the most part or "fucking hell, did they even playtest this bullshit" in those two special missions, while in total, you don't even have half the missions 3 had. Sure, it's still more than 2 had, but 2 had also it's own pace and difficulty, so on average a single mission was entire day of intense playing and planning (not to mention how many people were filtered out by Europe map in 2: GOLD)

The only saving grace of 4 is ability to generate random maps with passable generator and using it both against all-AI enemies or for multiplayer. This really does help this game, elevating it from clear downgrade from 3 gameplay-wise and replay-wise to being just slightly inferior
But other than that, the game is just meh. Which is a shame, since Mayans > Egyptians and the mechanical tweaks to the game (like rework on pioneers and setting up new outposts or improving transport in general or unique goods of other nations converting to your own unique goods once stolen/captured [so you don't end up with a stockpile of "wrong" alcohol or meat source) are fine, but other than that, 3 with Amazons expansion is the peak Settlers, even without random maps
And if you are playing the 25th anniversary edition, due to all the fixes and tweaks to it, 3 improves so much, there is no reason to bother with 4

Also, if the mini-campaigns for each nation was at least 5 missions long, or preferably 7-10 range and the main wasn't so underwhelming, the game would be much better. Europe's filter was mostly achieved by the fact that:
- your starting position has shit terrain, so you need to get to the plains of northern Italy... which is mostly covered in stone first
- the only gold in your reach is in Brenner Pass and unless you put full focus on getting there from the start, Yellow is going to capture it
- other Roman factions in Spain and Greece start with gold mines and expand quickly toward your direction - conquering that terrain is hard due to quality soldiers, while without any worthwhile resources, since everything will be mined out before you get there
- Carpathia is your top priority, but you have to get through Yellow and Red to tap that gold
Failure to secure any of those means you are fucked in a slow, painful way, while investing 4-8 hours into the map so far.

Settlers was HUEG in Germany. Germans love their village administration games like this and the Anno series

I don't get why this wasn't ported to consoles. The slow pace is a perfect fit.

Because the slow pace only applies to the first game. Also

He clearly ment the deformed shit that is in the 10th anni edition. I personally have a love-hate relationship with 10th anni. I like the gameplay improvements. I fucking hate the art directory.

The mouse snapping when laying down roads and flags is so nice. The viking expansion also has military buildings automatically disable gold gathering, so you can start using your gold where it's needed without babysitting every new building.

My only real problem with the game is playing above 768p starts to make the UI too small.

You mean the US, because it was well known in Europe.

Settlers 2 is still the best one imo. The original oozes soul(the 10th looks outdated as fuck without the souls aspect) and is one of the comfiest games ever.

Begining with 3 it started to focus too much on combat and just copy pasting the same game over and over otherwise. No surprise the series starting tanking in reviews there.

Not... really?
I mean what you describe applies to 3 and 4, which is not only normal, but expected. People from Blue Byte back in the day had a design philosophy of "one big change, two games", so you have 1 setting up basics and 2 refining them, 3 setting up basics for new gameplay and 4 refining it...
... and then they got bought by Ubisoft, doing AoE weak-ass clone. And then the series was never the same, even if trying to go back. Each game, starting from 5, is distinctively different, as if Settlers had identity crisis
