Shining Force is more fun for me. I like being able to walk around and explore outside of battles, and I prefer way turns work. I also like the art better. That said, I haven't played the much Fire Emblem.

Admittedly I played almost none of it, but from what I have seen and know, at least FE still retains a good deal of the usual gameplay, and iconic units. Even if the stories and some designs may be hit and miss.
Whereas in my opinion Shining lost just about everything that made it feel like a Shining game, they removed most of the races and most seem to be action RPGs now, if not just ports or remakes of things.
But I might also be biased and could be wrong, so no clue.
I wish it wasn't so either way, it's just kinda sad.

Fire Emblem's mechanics are okayish I guess. They're pretty standard in terms of war games; cavalry in the front, archers and mages in the back, heavy armor warriors in between. What kills me is how horribly boring all the dialogue is, and the lore is like the most dull genre fantasy schlock out there. Shining Force at least keeps it to the necessary amount (at least til Shining Force III, which followed Holy Ark as being unbearably wordy). Shining Force had a similar set up, the war game standard, except they have Centaurs instead of mounted cavalry.

III is the only one I never played. Were Cypress, Iom, or the Sword of Hajya relevant in it or even just mentioned? I kinda liked the Gaiden crews, even though they had virtually nothing to do with the original lost civilization and technology of SF1. Sure, Final Conflict loosely tied into SF2, but it didn't have anything to do with the other GG/CD games.

Same, for the longest time I tried to convince myself FE's story was better because muh politics and sects and traitors but it became boring and literally making the Fire Emblem an ever changing macguffin item every game made me lose respect for the worldbuilding
Shining Force's story is basic but effective, plus it spans the whole classic saga

Also demons are actually somewhat relatable whereas FE villains are just deranged mages or kings wanting land for no reason, probably secretly a dragon or is being used by a dragon

Both series I only got through the first couple battles before losing interest completely. At least for Shining Force's case the game had humor unlike FE. Now Final Fantasy Tactics? That's a real strategy game. I was actually engaged in the story, world, music, characters and combat enough to finish it.
