In case any linux-friends care, I want to share this bash script I wrote for myself as a PR/GLBoom+ launcher. It can be used interactively or through arguments only.

The idea is that it auto-applies sprite fixes and dssecret, as well as optional DEH patches and perk's DoomSFX. It also has a list of wads that it recognizes for which it applies the correct complevel, IWAD, and wad-specific fixes. If you play a WAD that's not recognized, it just asks you what cl and iwad to use. It also integrates demo playing/recording and passes any extra arguments directly to glboom. It also copies the final launch command to the clipboard in case you want to retry a demo recording right away after interactive mode

Keep in mind you should tell it where to find your pr/glboom binary in the first couple of lines. It should detect any wads in your DOOMWADPATH environment variable, or failing that, inside ~/.prboom-plus. Or just in the current directory.

It might not be terribly useful to anyone except myself, but I thought I'd share anyway, on the off chance that someone likes it. It should work just as well for Mac-friends. Don't know how much tinkering it would need for Windows-friends. If you feel like it, try to break it and let me know if you find anything wrong so I can fix it!

>> No.6473307

What's the advantage of PR/GLBoom+ over crispy?

You can play Boom-compatible maps in the former. You can't on the latter. You can make the former render the game at higher resolutions. You can't on the latter, just up to double-native resolution (+widescreen recently). Those are the main things that come to mind.

Both Hunter and Lucy are perfect in their own ways. One is 6'6" of sheer feminine muscle and bronze cleavage, the perfect Adonis-with-tits given a lightning gun and a nasty attitude, able to backflip with every jump and wanting nothing more than to crush every Sorg skull beneath the heel of her enormous metal boots. The other is a wobbling, cellulite-speckled lardo with an ass I want to fucking suffocate under and her own brand of Southern-fried justice to dish out, if she'd stop hitting on the other combatants. Totally opposite, extreme ends of the body spectrum. Man, where were all these people bitching about lack of body positivity back in '99?

>> No.6473505

No anon, I think you're misunderstanding.

You can use PR/GLBoom+ to play Doom/Doom2 vanilla and limit-removing maps in the correct compatibility setting and be completely accurate, just like Crispy.

You can also use PR/GLBoom+ to play Doom/Doom2 Boom and MBF format maps in the correct compatibility setting and be completely accurate. This is the part that Crispy can't do, Crispy only does vanilla and limit-removing.

The most commonly used -complevel arguments used with PR/GLBoom+ are the following:
>-complevel 2 for Doom 2
>-complevel 3 for The Ultimate Doom
>-complevel 4 for Final Doom
>-complevel 9 for Boom
>-complevel 11 for MBF

There's complevels from 0 to 17, but the ones listed above are ones you'll use 99% of the time. The others would be very special cases that you'll probably never encounter.

The partial invis adds randomness to their attacks so one rocket could be leading you and you run right into it. Or the three cyberdemons could split up, one of them walking into the wall, instead of all three staying in the center of the room. I had both of these happen to me while 100%-ing this map. You could just skip the cyberdemons, but you could also just skip the entire level and beat it in ~12 seconds using the speedrun skip

Not true 3D person. Slayer is just a HUD element.
So when it looks like a fireball goes past the slayer's right and into the screen, you still get hit, and the enemies very visibly attack not the slayer, but the camera.

There was one actual 3D person mod inspired in parts by Max Payne or some such, "Dark hunter" or something like that.

How weird feeling? >It starts with generic "oh noes teh aliens!"
That's actually a cool way to start. You do run the risk of giving the impression that it's just gonna be "teh aliens" by having that right off the bat, but if done right you can really fuck with the expectations of the player by building off of that and making some deep shit that makes them think "oh shit it's not just 'teh aliums' any more," which I'd assume Marathon does anyway. I always thought the idea of taking generic tropes in fiction and building a world and making actual lore around that was a neat idea, kind of like The Venture Bros. how it started as a parody of the boy adventurer cartoon trope, and eventually started doing this parody of super villians and bad guys by having the Guild of Calamitous Intent and the OSI have actual rules and regulations with how good guys and bad guys fight. Obviously that's more so done for comedic purposes, but the idea of super villians having their own organization and actual rules on how to fight good guys is both hilariously ironic but also really fascinating to see play out.

Anyway, the game shipped with a lot of bugs, and the first level is really not very appealing or fun, even if overall, Dai-Katana is mostly an ok game (assuming you patch out all the bugs), with all the hype and delay (for the time), I fail to see how else it would be received. That's something I've thought about in fiction before rhetorically: if the work in question takes place in a time/location where the medium it's presented in (books, movies, video games etc) exists, is it possible that the exact same work of fiction that details all of the events in the story exists in that story's universe? Like how there's a Double Dragon arcade cabinet in the Double Dragon movie?

And if it's a live action movie that takes place in a universe where real life actors could possibly exist, do the actors that play the movie's characters also exist in this universe as well? For example if there's actually a Keanu Reeves in the universe of The Matrix, or if Jim Carrey also exists in the universe of the Ace Ventura movies. Really it's just junk food for thought though, if anything.

Pic related, btw

Eh, I think Hexen was still worse about it. The hub system makes it incredibly easy to lose track of things, IMO.

is gzdoom too resource intensive? i try just getting mods that run with zdoom because the former feels 'laggy' and heats my computer, unless older versions of gzdoom are fine?

>> No.6477719

IIRC framerate is uncapped by default, meaning your computer will strain to output as many frames as physically possible. Fluctuations between 500 fps and 1000fps can be perceived as lag.

It may also be that your computer only supports very old OpenGL versions, in which case you should try using LZDoom instead of GZDoom. (it uses an older GZDoom renderer version but is otherwise much more up to date). Do try to cap the framerate to your monitors refresh rate first though.

Some visual effect to be applied universally to any harmful floor, regardless of its texture.
My idea initially - make upward going "evaporating" particles, with either color or density being an indicator of just how much hurtful the floor is.
IDK if it is possible to match a particle color to the main color of the texture that is not dependent on a databas e of textures.
Optionally - add popping "boiling" bubbles (from Heretic/Hexen lava with recolors) to the surface of known liquids if said liquid is damaging.
Another option - apply some sort of special easily identifiable glow to the texture? I'm not sure on how well that will work/look.

Soild wall surrpunded by sky-ceiling low sector. It can also be improved somewhat by having high floor on sky-ceiling sector.

Not sure. With something untextured probably. Crispy Doom seems to just black out if it can't do deep water.

Considering they have the source code already, it should probably work out pretty well. Wouldn't mind having it on console either, if only to get the Japanese to try it, they would probably like it for how weird and arcade heavy it is.

>> No.6478630

probably has something to do with it being made with multiplayer in mind
having constant updates and nightlies might fuck up some popular mods, and if people are using different versions of the port, then there'd be major issues trying to connect to anything

>> No.6478723

skulltag added a bunch of new enemies, items, and modes that spruced up the game
even if it was unofficial, it still felt like team arena or UT in a way: a multiplayer expansion pack to a popular game
the content isn’t included with zandronum for copyright reasons, but it can still be downloaded and used in a server
problem is, almost no server uses it, so all you’ll be getting is whodunit/8bdm/lca

also, skulltag is a much cooler name

>> No.6478732

The one.

>> No.6478749

The new weapons and monsters in Skulltag were a little bit dubious desu (mostly just palette swaps with more health and doing more damage), but it had lots of good levels ready to go for multiplayer, which was the real high quality content it had to offer.

Zandronum should definitely catch up to the complete Decorate codebase if anything (at least for the close future), and then set sights on some good levels to package with the port, levels which are well suited to respective base game modes.

>> No.6478753

>Zandronum should definitely catch up
Isn't the project dead?

Or is someone actually forking it and picking up the development, like Graf and company are doing with PRBoom+ ?

>> No.6478771

ZDaemon was forked off of ZDoom when there was no Decorate yet, hence no mod support.
Skulltag was made to rectify that - a ZDoom with client-server multiplayer AND mods. Then it's lead dev left, and Zandronum was made to succeed it.

It's not dead, but porting ZScript support over all the changes Z& itself made is not as simple and the people working on it now just couldn't care less about it so the progres on that front is slow.

Exactly, that is what I'm talking about with "security through obscurity". They claim they can make it safer if the code is closed, but this is not actually the case. You can have anti-cheat without making the code closed source.
