I'm interested to see what games you have positive feelings for that you hated playing.

Pic related because you spend more time doing shitty/frustrating/boring bosses instead of the cool stealth. The stealth and the avant-garde storytelling through gameplay are really epic and then it's infuriating when you get thrown into another damn boss battle where you have to use the shitty weapons or the boring cqc.

Did you play the VR Missions stand-alone game? If you havent yet, you should...

If you hated playing the game then surely it's just a shitty game (to you)

NiGHTS Into Dreams. I love the comfy atmosphere and the boss fights are amazing, but I'm just plain terrible at the game. I'll never finish it, and I dont even like playing it. I wish I enjoyed it.

Any Monopoly game. I also suck at it.

It's weird, I think I still feel mostly positive about the game. Maybe the right word is appreciate, like I really appreciate what MGS is despite it being unfun to play.

Monopoly is not fun and it does a shitty job of conveying economic ideas. if you have no money, you don't stay at a hotel on Boardwalk just because you happen to be in front of it. walk two blocks and stay somewhere cheaper. nobody is forcing you to stay there

Sonic CD. I loved the graphics, the music, the animated intros, the 3D bonus stages, the concept of time travelling... but no matter how many times I try I never have the same fun I have with the Mega Drive Sonics. End up quitting after a couple of levels.

Here's my story with MGS1. I had played Metal Gear on NES when I was a kid and I cried when I lost the cartridge. I was literally playing it all the day and it was the best game for me. I probably couldn't figure out that I was supposed to use the compass somewhere in the game so I had explored every area except the last part of the game, I had a diary full of "save game" passwords, well these details are irrelevant anyway.

So I was 9 yo when MGS1 came out. I was already playing it on a black demo disc on my PS1, I had fully memorized the first area after playing the demo tens of times. Then some time passed, I couldn't find the actual MGS1 disc anywhere. I really wanted to play that shit because it was a miracle for me after Metal Gear NES. Then I finally found some MGS1 disc, it was actually VR missions but I had no idea there was such a thing. So this VR missions had a progress percentage, which I thought I was supposed to make it 100% before it lets me play the actual MGS1 game. Because as I progressed, various trailers were being unlocked that hyped me even more. After spending weeks, I finally managed to get 100%, and all I got was a fucking RAY-looking metal gear model briefly. Can't even complain because VR was cool, I was spooked in Mystery missions.

Well then finally I found the actual MGS1, which was the happiest day for me. I have a special bond for Metal Gear NES and MGS1.

Gaming made so many leaps and bounds in the 90's. Watching 2D games get turned into 3D blew my young mind. I never actually played MGS1 until recently. I remember reading Tips and Tricks magazine's guide and the game sounded incredible, but I didn't have a PS1. As someoone who didn't play it until 2018, the game still holds up and shows a lot more style and attention to detail than new stuff.

If you have a good enough PC, Mednafen is the one to use these days. However it’s not for zoomers, it’s command line only unless you use the retroarch version which isn’t quite as accurate.

Super Metroid gets its dick sucked ultra hard but it was simply not fun to play. I'm not a masochist. If a game doesn't catch me within 10 minutes I'm not going to play it. That being said there are plenty of games that are fun from the first minute so it's definitely not me. Same story for mega man.

I simply never got the appeal for megaman or metroid games.

Super Metroid is another good one, the controls are hard to go back to after there being so many other better controlling metroidvanias. I will say it got a lot better in the GBA games though, Zero Mission feels really tight.

Any JRPG with random encounters. I want to be able to explore every nook and cranny of every area. Getting stopped every 10-15 steps for a random encounter than is either "Spam Attack to win" or "Just Run Away" drives me fucking nuts.

It starts to feel like a huge waste of time cause in 99% of the games the battles aren't challenging enough to matter, so it's just ruining my exploration fun. Plus in a lot of games killing the encounter is faster than running so you end up overleveled and then the game is zero fun

20-minute exposition dumps in codecs and cutscenes are the polar opposite of "storytelling through gameplay."

>> No.6471324

>>6471229
The codec sequences are definitely a pace breaker. The game would be so much better if you could keep playing during the these parts (with maybe have Snake lower his voice when sneaking past guards). It doesn't make sense for Snake to stop dead in his tracks every time somebody decides they want to waffle on about their genes.

Apologies for the titles being a bit newish for this board, but here goes:
Deus Ex: shitty movement, glitchy AI, and Denton has the aim of a grandma who's shooting for the first time until he gets his augs upgraded.

Splinter Cell: again, the protag can't aim for shit and there's no upgrades that help with that.

I know neither game is supposed to be played like Doom or some shit, but it just doesn't feel very realistic.

>> No.6471545

>>6471351
>Deus Ex: shitty movement, glitchy AI, and Denton has the aim of a grandma who's shooting for the first time until he gets his augs upgraded.

That's kinda the point. You start as a newbie who can barely aim, though you can give yourself a boost at the beginning by assigning more experience points on aiming. You can play through the whole game without being a gun-guy if you choose to develop other skills. Good thing is that despite of having grandma aim, the guns will still do just as much damage as guns should. Some other games require you to level up for the guns to make more damage, but in Deus Ex you need to level up to get steadier aim.

>> No.6471664

>>6471545
>You start as a newbie who can barely aim

That's an asspull to make putting points into aim more desirable. I know the guy is not necessarily supposed to be a commando and whatnot, but he should have at least gone through some sorta training.
