Because it's easier to create something brand new as opposed to having to remake something that was released in the past.

Tomb Raider II is a great game, but it doesn't really make sense when you think about it - how do you make a modern game where you stroll around the streets of Venice Italy shooting people to death in broad daylight for two hours and have it feel even moderately realistic?

Oh, come on. TR3 is average at worst. I still find it entertaining to play. AoD is crap, but it's a fascinating crap, like DA2. You can see the good game trying to get out, and this makes you sad, because it could've been a great game.
Chronicles is shit, but even Core themselves admitted that they half-assed it.

A while ago friend of mine tried to launch a general for that purpose and the very first thread convinced him that nope, most people bitching about TR on /vr/ are zoomers who started around LAU, while posing to be some sort of great fans playing ever since.
