I've never played them myself, but from what I've heard/read, I,II and IV are usually considered great.
III has often bad rep, but it's more because it's very different from the other games as it doesn't seem to be a bad game in itself.

I think the sequel Gussun Paradise on PlayStation is the only one out of the entire franchise to ever get released outside of Japan. But it also looks like that game runs very slowly due to the PAL conversion - and at least for that one, it's not like you can't play the original due of the language. That would be like saying you can't play Super Mario Land because you don't speak Japanese. Gussun Oyoyo was originally an arcade game and was ported to a whole bunch of systems.
