Both work well, really. I was just thinking NFS3 because of the menu and general visual design in particular. It's dated now, yeah, but all those swoopy blue menus with pixel-egg backgrounds and Rom Di Prisco's ball-shattering techno pumping in the background, there was really nothing like it or since, and that includes the other NFS games.

That said, I adore Motorhead's track visuals, it's like someone mashed together Atlantica and Empire City and made a whole game out of it.

That game had a really long community support (last update of F1GP-Ed on the Aminet is from late 2010, but there are more patches for the game like GPPatch or PatchF1GP)
http://aminet.net/search?query=f1gp-ed
Which includes teams, drivers, patches to match the current state of the sport and of course technical patches like uncapping the frame rate so you can run it as fast a you like either with acceleration cards for a real amiga or emulated. This seems to be recorded with an emulated run and (of course) uncapped frame rate. But I only know that stuff like this exists for the original Amiga version, but I'm not quite sure about the PC port, that came out one year later in 1992 and was also released on CD in 1994.

Test Drive 5 was great. The soundtrack was excellent. But the cheats and broken collision detection were awesome. You could put in codes to make it so that whenever you honked, all of your opponents would immediately stop. Another code would make it so that honking launched your car upwards while giving it a boost. Combining these, you could just spam the horn and watch your opponents get locked in frustration while your car bounced around the map, hitting collisions and changing directions on a whim, all at warp speed. To my 15-year-old brain, this shit was hilarious.

Also, this was the first time I realized that some games could be easily modded. All of the car data was stored in zip files with different extensions. You could just change the skin on a car, its model, or its stats based on the data in that archive.

just started replaying pic related. Did not really "get" it when I was 10. Could not get past the garage mission in the beginning and just did free roam hoping it would be a 3D Grand Theft Auto that didn't exist yet.

Playing it now I really appreciate it having seen alot of the movies that inspired it (French Connection especially), It's really a one of a kind game. Not many games let you drive muscle cars in car chases, and when they do they usually handle like boats. Driver actually makes the cars feel heavy and forces you to throw the weight around. Modern racing sims generally never give muscle cars their due diligence. This game has physics that hold up really fucking well today.

Every official addon vehicle for NFS4, fully extracted and ready to be put in the game. Do note that for whatever reason (copy protection/EA retardation etc.), these cars go in the SaveData/Cars folder rather than Data/Cars. If you put them in the latter then the game will crash on startup and throw a stack pointer exception.

Also note that the XJR-15 is a modified version as EA broke the reverse gear when they originally released it. That said, it's a pretty fuckin' ugly model which doesn't really resemble the real car to start with. Pic related for MM2's far closer, so I'll probably try and convert it over sometime in the future for my own personal enjoyment.

No problem, my dudes. Also, I forgot to mention - if you can't see the two BMWs after copying them in, rename their .viv files from --car.viv to car.viv, removing the two dashes. This is something the NFSHS Mixer appends so that they don't appear in your game but remain in the car folder, thus allowing you to have more than 50 (inactive) cars without removing them.

>>6471347

It was nice, but I really, REALLY wish they hadn't locked off modding with that title. If it had followed in the footsteps of its predecessors, maybe releasing Hot Pursuit 2 a year earlier, it would have been the consummate NFS title. It was definitely the tightest put together in terms of physics, graphics, and features, but lacked the replayability of 3 and 4 due to being unable to be modded until many years after its release.

BTW, this is going to sound like a retarded question, but how do you spoiler text here? Is it something you get with a pass? On cripplechan and a few other IBs it was double asterisks, but that doesn't work here. Some image tutorials show it's BBcode, but I'm almost certain this is a rib designed to bait newfags.

It's kind of embarrassing to think that at one point in time some Jap NEET made better cars than EA themselves, using their own meshes and photos found on the internet.
If you want to kill a few minutes, Archive screenshot is VERY related; Ryuji Kainoh's old website:
http://web.archive.org/web/20051221003323/http://rkncs.totalnfs.net/

Click the links at the bottom to see what he did for HP and HS. Almost ALL of them were made using the default Ford Falcon mesh, simply stretched, retextured, and with additional polies where necessary.

I'm also in talks with someone who mods Re-Volt to take ownership of some of his cars which haven't seen the light of day in over 15 years, so stay tuned.

I've done that too, at least with "lore-styled" cars (authors like Ben Trapp, Felixx, RK, and GriefOn), because I don't think NFSC has more than 18 months' of life left in it. Looks like it suffered some database crash around May of 2016, as that's when a lot of historic file comments were restored. Forums are completely gone, and with it, it looks like a lot of knowledge has vanished too. Traffic is probably a fraction of what it was back in the Black Box era, and to be quite honest I'm stunned that they're still online.

>Holy shit, that's impressive! Was it the only way to do mods back then?
Most very early mods for NFS3 were done this way as bespoke 3D software was typically off limits and the idea of modding video games/creating addons was still a very new one. As a result, much of 1999 - 2000 is made up of Falcons and HSVs with crude additions. RK of course proved that that was all you needed to make cars which looked better than the ones made in a game development studio.

At the end of the day, I think it's ironic that at one point in time the default aesthetic that authors such as RK produced was considered "undesirable", and that cars with 3D modelled details like wheels and headlights were considered the "ideal". Now it's many years into the future and RK's, Trapp's and others' work have aged gracefully whereas those from mid-'02 - early '04 are borderline unplayable, pic very related.

>Destruction Derby is a vehicular combat racing video game developed by Reflections Interactive and published by Psygnosis. Based on the sport of demolition derby, the game tasks the player with racing and destroying cars to score points. The developers implemented simulated physics to make the results of collisions easier to predict, and they kept the game's tracks small to increase the number of wrecks. Versions of Destruction Derby were released for MS-DOS, PlayStation and Sega Saturn.

>Daytona USAis a racing video game developed by Sega AM2 and released by Sega, with a limited release in 1993 followed by a full release in 1994. It was the first Sega game to debut on the Sega Model 2 arcade system board. Daytona USA is a stock car racing game where players race opponents and a clock on one of three tracks, including the Daytona International Speedway. Sega claims it is one of the highest-grossing arcade games of all time.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHZvMCzlQKc
>Daytona USA: Championship Circuit EditionThis version was originally released in Europe and North America, with some modifications done in the subsequent Japanese release. Improvements over the original Sega Saturn version of Daytona USA include a drastic reduction in popup, increased framerate (now a consistent thirty frames per second), a new selection of cars, two new courses, a 2-player mode, compatibility with the Saturn's 3D analogue control pad and Arcade Racer steering wheel, and a ghost mode. The European release does not feature the "black bars" at the top and bottom of the screen that are present in the majority of PAL games of the era - the box boasts "slick new full screen graphics".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaaQNtEx9kM
>Daytona USA Circuit Edition
Though the western Champion Circuit Edition and Japanese Circuit Edition are by-and-large the same game, Circuit Edition adds further tweaks to the formula, creating the definitive copy of Daytona USA for the Saturn. Circuit Edition extends the draw distance even further, swaps some textures and allows the user to set the time of day in which to race in, whether that be night, dusk or morning. On top of this, the arcade soundtrack is now an option, and new drift mechanics have been implemented, making the game control more similarly to the original arcade version.

>Destruction Derby 2 is a vehicular combat racing video game developed by Reflections Interactive and published in 1996 by Psygnosis for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation. The sequel to Destruction Derby, players race with the goal of earning points by damaging opponent cars. Standard races and matches based in arenas with the goal of remaining the last player driving are also available. The game is an overhaul of the original and features ideas that did not make it into the first game including tracks that feature obstacles and improved realism. The car mechanics were also redesigned. Development was also focused on Americanisation: the game style shifted away from the British banger racing of the original, and the cars and music were changed to fit a NASCAR theme. The game features Paul Page as commentator, and the soundtrack was created by thrash metal bands Jug and Tuscan. The game was positively received, with reviewers praising the large tracks and car physics, though the PC version was criticised for its difficulty.

>Muppet Race Mania is a PlayStation racing game that was developed by Traveller's Tales Ltd., and published by Midway in North America and Sony Computer Entertainment in Europe, and released in 2000. The game includes the choice of 25 muppet characters driving 25 vehicles. They race on 34 tracks based on locations in Muppet films and TV programs.
>This game marked the first vocal appearance by Janice since the death of Richard Hunt in 1992. She, as well as Scooter were performed by Matt Vogel, the only time when he voiced these characters. It is also the first vocal appearance of Link Hogthrob since the death of Jim Henson in 1990, as performed by Steve Whitmire, as well as the final time Frank Oz voiced his characters before retiring from The Muppets.

What are the number one, entry-level racing vidya that everybody should be expected to have played? I'm very new to actually paying attention to the genre, as the only series I really know of are Mario Kart, F-Zero, Daytona, Sonic R (if that counts), Burnout, and (although not /vr/) like, one random NfS game I had on PC as a kid.
