Dear amazing feedback anons: I have finished a new map, and ask for your playtesting.

Map06 in this set. The map's theme/focus is on forcing the player to be constantly on the move and to find smart places to engage enemies from. It uses a ZDoom format cos Boom doesn't let me use flats and wall textures interchangeably. Please tell me what sucks, and how you think I might fix it.

Short but sweet. I couldn't find any of the secrets although I certainly found some of the semi-secrets. What was the point of the green button that lowered those four platforms, by the way?

Also, there's more than enough health and ammo to run through this entire thing and just tank the hits without worrying too much about positioning. I didn't really feel pressured, maybe on fast monsters it would be. Perhaps add a few ambush pinkies or something to crowd the player out? Lost Souls?

Welp beat Marathon 2 on TC and the last level was a bit underwhelming. It was much easier than M1 by virture giving you more save spots and an infinite supply of ammo. The very last battle is no joke as they take away your pattern buffers and then locking you in a small arena with tons of baddies. Two of which explode in a deceptivley large explosion. I survived with practically no health. Overall my opinion on the games rankings have changed. Marathon > Marathon infinity > Marathon 2: Durandal. M1 and 2 switched places after realizing how much more conventional the story and design of 2 is. Love them all still

Hmm, I'm not sure which button you mean. Is it located next to where the former human is standing on the raised platform in the first screenshot? If so, it opens a timed door to a secret, rather than lowering the platforms (which lower by themselves after a set time).

As for the health surplus, yeah, that's quite true. As a self contained level for a veteran player, it's a lot. However, the mapset is designed to be somewhat newcomer-friendly, and map 6 is still early enough that I want to be kind.

I've been playing a bunch of very old Doom 1 wads to enhance my map design knowledge (learning from the past) and one thing that absolutely despise are the masses of shotgunners they've put into the maps.

I get it, the shotgunners were the only option for dealing a lot of damage that could not be dodged back then, but holy shit it is so annoying to dance around masses of them that pop out of walls and corners in tight corridors. It's especially bad when mappers forget to put in armor or a chaingun.

>> No.6446937

I haven’t touched Samsara in a long time
I can say that the concept of a multi-FPS crossover will always be great, and the execution of it in this mod is the best it could be. I had gripes with some of the design choices, like infinite pistol ammo, the seemingly arbitrary choice to remap the weapon slots, and Heretic’s firemace being in slot 2, but I’ve realized that this was the devs’ way of trying to make all the characters compatible with every IWAD and as many possible usermaps as they could. Still confused about the second HUD on the top of the screen, but I’d assume that’s its there for classes without a weapon list on their original HUD.

The whole thing still holds up after 6 or 7 years, and makes me sad that I missed out on Zandronum servers when the mod was at its peak.

RECOMMEND ME SOME CUSTOM MAPS FOR PLUTONIA OR TNT IWADS

>> No.6447131

>>6447124
uhh, any of those projects that aim to be remakes or sequels to them, like Plutonia 2, Urania, TNT2, Revilution
Other than that, I don’t see why there’d be any maps for them, unless the people working on it really likes Plutonia’s vine textures, or whatever ugly things TNT has

>> No.6447147

>>6447131
There's some smatterings of individual maps people have made using the Plutonia wad, I assume because they like the texture sets and the sky and all. I think OneManDoom reviewed a couple.

No idea if anyone has done the same for TNT, though TNT does have some textures of its own which are good (and some which are maybe not so good).

Solid map, was mildly annoyed at the fact you can go around the back of the door in the start and realize all that's behind it is a couple inches of wall. This was the wad meant for new players, right? I'm not sure if all the hitscanners perched around will be all that new player friendly, though maybe it's best to start them early on the harsh realities of life. After clearing the starting area I ran straight for the blue key, then ran straight for the blue door by the red doors and from there on I had enough resources to clean out the map, it became far easier from that point onwards (not that that's necessarily a bad thing).

So I'm playing Doom for the first time (DOS Ultimate Doom, on a windows 98 machine). I'm usually not a big FPS fan but I'm enjoying it a ton for the most part. The stage based progression and lack of a tutorial/plot make the pacing fantastic. Movement feels good and all of the guns so far feel great. The shotgun is seriously one of the best feeling shotguns I've used in a shooter. The map design is just open enough to encourage exploration for secrets without feeling log a slog to get lost in. The enemies all look and sound great too

I'm actually really surprised. Kind of like Mario 64 it baffles me how they managed to nail a genre right out of the gate. I'm only half way through The Shores of Hell and so far it's definitely one of my favorite shooters

Not perfect though. My only big issues with the game are
>lots of moments where you enter into new rooms with enemies on upper levels just out of sight that start shooting you with hit scan weapons. I always flail around for a few seconds trying to find what's even attacking me
>as far as I can tell there's no way to disable forward/backward mouse movement. I'm sure its just a product of the time but it makes kb/m feel like playing the game on ice
>surprise crush-me-blocks. Was not fun working through Deimos lab for 10 minutes just for a random floor tile to crush me into the ceiling

That's about it. Thanks for subscribing to my blog. I'm not sure if I should move onto Doom 2 next or try some other doom engine games (was looking at Strife)

Two good submission were thrown out, one on technicality, the other with no explanation (Libby, a furry goat or something made by artist who previously designed mascot for Krita graphic editor and some minor FOSS projects). Meanwhile, picrelated is what had made it to the finals. And to make it worse, despite organizers claiming they put every submission to the scrutiny, that god-awful penguin turned out to be traced from existing clip-art. You can imagine the public reaction. So Freedoom is not the worst thing in this regard, at least textures are okay and Doom 1 monster replacements are passable.

gameplay wise i'll admit that it's differently balanced but so are most gameplay mods and you don't see people shitting on GMOTA for example for changing balance

when it comes to the developer you need to remember that he's brazilian, it's his culture, check your privilige.

I didn't say it cancels the whole thing, I said it cancels half of it. why should the player give a shit about author and "community"? I'd argue the code/optimization part is also only barely relevant, assuming you've got a PC from the last decade. going to choke on massive slaughtermaps obviously, but that's to be expected.

again, there are plenty of legitimate reasons to hate the mod. cacos die from a single ssg at 10 meters, pistol class doesn't work, purist mode doesn't work, it fucks with textures and actors it has no business fucking with, etc etc. but I only ever see complete shit reasons being parroted

Serious Sam is extremely legit and deeply misunderstood, play it on a higher difficulty and the games encounter design really shines through, it's like playing chess at a million miles an hour as you try to deal with each set of encounters, prioritizing enemies, weapons etc. That being said they can be extremely exhausting games, hard to play long sessions of. Serious Sam is basically what happens if you take something like Doom, completely disregard level layout, puzzle design, etc and focus entirely on encounter design and enemy design, and they're extremely good at that one thing.

Completely fair, I always see people call Serious Sam brain dead though and that's totally off the mark, its just hyper focused on it's big goals. I think it leads to an interesting comparison to retro shooters as well, one of the things that makes retro shooters so enduring is the raw versatility of their verbs(don't like the term but can't think of a better one) survival horror levels, linear action romps, slaughterwads, adventure levels, etc. There's a huge possibility space that Serious Sam completely abandons. Consequently I think it's actually much harder to make a good Serious Sam style game than people think; just look at how braindead painkiller is despite being conceptually similar it is to Sam, or how bad all the Serious Sam user levels are. There's definitely a level of craftsmanship above what people think there is.

All the maps from new faces either felt too showoffy, or were just a drag overall. It also has three levels that are blatantly filler (20, 25, and 26), as they were originally going to be demonfear maps but were donated to Requiem due to the project having difficulties with getting every slot properly filled.

I am at risk of triggering the shitstorm, but how nowadays it is generally accepted that Duke was "sexist". How so? At least in DN3D (which is the definitive game for the character) the absolute maximum that he allowed himself to do is watch a stripper shake her tits after paying her. Not like in DNF where he just watched two of his underage fan girls being raped to literal death and then cracking a joke about that. Which was, not gonna lie, unsettling - not because i cannot handle that but because Duke is generally more lighthearted and that came off as designer pushing his fetish into the game.

So instead, they thought if they turn Duke into an edgy piece of shit, that alone will be a recipe for success. It wasn't, but considering the people in charge for DNF since the earyl 2000s, it's not surprising at all. I also refuse to accept either DNF or WT as a sequel. My main issues with it are that I think the favourites list could be a bit more robust. I also dislike that favourites aren't sorted (they're just kept in the order you add them), and neither are engines. Additionally demo recording launches the engine with the working directory set to that of the engine, this is probably not an issue on windows, but on Linux if you have your engines installed as system-level packages it means you effectively can't record demos through the rl2 ui because it tries to record them into /bin or whatever path your engine is installed to. Pretty minor issues, but ones that if I wasn't incredibly lazy I'd probably work on patches for and send pull requests.

I disagree people just dont know how to handle him. It's a timeless parody if you ask me.

A modern day action hero nobledark grimderp like Vinny Riddick or Wick clashing with alpha attitude duke would be hilarious.
Duke just needs care and attention or else you end up with lunatic gears of war type character like the guy bullestorm.

If by 'not developed' you mean:

-The player being equipped with weapons that are either useless right away, or have a ridiculously slow rate of fire (the mauler)/high ammo consumption (the assault rifle),
-While enemies with the very same weapons being able to deliver a deadly hit in a matter of seconds, sometimes from so far away that they only appear as a few pixels,
-If they even need those weapons, because some (especially (mini) bosses) simply kill you upon contact,

Then you're right. I had really high hopes for this game. After defeating the first boss, it all went downhill. By the final levels, I was forcing myself through only to see the ending. It could have been a great game if they had enough time to finish it, though.

Duke actually has no real personality, much like Doomguy. They tried to make him edgy in DNF and it didn't really pan out. There's a lot of places they could take him, though I personally don't think he'd be fit for an attempt at a serious plot. All those negatives can be attributed to Doom as well. The combat in strife is neither better or worse, which is what i was saying.
Strife has very pronounced lowpoints, i admit. The levels can be absolute ass to navigate, and the combat get's stale real fast before the game finally picks up, which is also a problem i attribute to level design. But again, Doom and especially Doom 2 has it's fair share of crappy levels as well.
Generally, if you like Doom, strife will feel average if you judge it solely by it's combat. It's the story, open world exploration, and light RPG mechanics that give strife it's flavour.

I mean, what are some modern iconic action heroes? Only John Wick comes to mind. Not to mention that Western world is stuck in nostalgia for 80s and 90s.

Maybe the reason there are no more masculine heroes, or positive role models in general for either sex, is because a certain group of people doesn't want your people to grow up healthy and strong. Men are portrayed a bumbling idiots like Homer for example, and women are portrayed as sluts; no positive role models, no good epic stories like the ancients did in the past like the Iliad for example. Or women are unrealistically portrayed as the action hero instead of an ideal motherly role, like in Ion Fury or Blazing Chrome or the newest Terminator movie, in an inversion of roles
>inb4 simpsons was the 80s
Because the process has been ongoing for a long time, very slowly. Too quickly and too many people notice.

because the future looked bright back then. i forget who said this or how it was phrased exactly but people are nostalgic for a future that never was

Eh, its not even that. It just feels like a leftover from when the game initially had Wolf3D style pickups, but they couldn't be bothered to remove the stat, so they just applied it to a bunch of powerups and bonuses and called it a day.

There's definitely a push in popular media in opposition to strong masculine heroes and dedicated mothers, but I don't think that characters like Homer Simpson is born out of that (he's just written to be funny, well, used to be, perhaps he is used for subversion now), and I don't think that strong female heroes have to detract from family at all.

There can certainly be more role models of more kinds, but I don't think that means we can't have unrealistic power fantasies, I think those are important.

I wish I would've started using Doom Launcher sooner. It even keeps track of the statistics of every time you beat a level. I recommend you just keep your current WAD folder as-is, and only add WADs one at a time into Doom Launcher to keep it organized

It even keeps your demos organized for you. I like to record my runs because it takes up virtually zero hard drive space. I deleted my E1 demo because I died in it, and I already have an E1 UV-Fast demo I recorded in the past

>examine Half-Life's AI in depth
>AI is capable of taking cover, retreating, ambushes and even suppresson using only a handful of simple rules (basically just "shoot/grenade the spot you last saw the player at" and "break line of sight if your health drops below this level")

>examine FEAR's AI in depth
>AI can not take cover in the absence of fixed cover nodes (and in fact will sometimes take cover behind walls that no longer exist)
>AI does not know how to suppress
>AI can't actually flush you out with grenades, so corner-camping is super effective
>AI seems to be unable to pursue the player, instead just returning to its scripted patrol route if you disappear long enough
>but it announces everything it does, so it seems like it's doing a lot

Yes, but the Duke isn't a bit like Rambo in the first one and even in the 2nd. 4 and 5 are out of question i guess because they are a decade younger than DN3D.
