I'm thinking about selling all of my flashcarts and buying a full blown mister fpga setup. Is this a good idea? Anyone else done this?

Gee MiSTer, there's no need for a MiSTer when you can just emulate on a PC.

200% this. Show me a side by side video comparison of a "mister" and bsnes or gxplus or something. I must be missing why HARDWARE! emulation is so great.

FPGA is the future.

all emulators get the rope

What would be the advantage of doing that? Right now I have working hardware and flashcarts and I would only ever consider selling the flashcarts if my hardware craps out one day. And even then I would probably just fix or replace the hardware.

in 20 years, todays cheap FPGA are not powerful enough, and the powerful ones cost a lot of money!
call me back when the n64 core, ps1 or the saturn core camomes up!

I pretty much did this, it was worth it. Play with original controllers via SNAC and output to a PVM. I have a large physical collection so really it was just a move fuelled by convenience and now I can play over HDMI and RGB without fuss. You won't find any constructive discussion of FPGAs on /vr/, I wouldn't waste your breath on the majority of Luddites on this board.

>Play with original controllers via SNAC and output to a PVM.
I do this, but my PVM can take VGA/EGA so I just emulate and output to the PVM as a 3rd monitor and use a BlissBox to connect original controllers.
Its really nice since it's a "best of both worlds" type setup IMO
But a Miser is still nice because some of the cores let you connect some original hardware to them, like the Macintosh and C64 ones.

Even if my PVM could accept VGA or I had 15khz analog output configured, it would be nice to have just a small simple perfectly accurate box so other people could be using the PC while I play retro games.

The only thing is that I could build a whole additional capable gaming PC from used parts for what it costs to build a MiSTer

Ok I’ll bite. A mister can be easily hooked up to a CRT without latency cost. It uses a lot less power and has more controller options in a way. And is always “ready to go”. You could argue the controller thing but the others are just factual.

Yup I got rid of anything not sentimental to me that ran well on the mister. My only regret is the convenience of having so much available means its a little hard for me to focus in on one game if that makes sense. The slight inconvenience of swapping out cartridges and plugging in consoles sort of acted as a deterrent from that behavior if that makes sense.

this is the kind of thing I was looking for. I bought a house and as I was unhooking all my consoles and packing my games it hit me how much of a headache it is having to juggle all these things. Going to buy the parts tonight.

yea you could I guess, but I think putting the carts into a real console is aesthetically pleasing.

Yes, you should just ditch playing on real hardware and buy an expensive piece of superfluous emulation electronics because something something controllers something something luddites. Sounds like a plan!

Op here. For the price of an SD2SNES and an SD card I bought the DE10, the Ioboard and the sdram for the MiSTer. Should all be in next week. I'll let you guys know if I regret it.

flashcarts = fpga based cartridge
mister = essentially open source console+flash card with multiple consoles and arcade boards on one device
