For those who are interested, sharing the latest iteration of my '4chan dospack', 1.33a

>What is it?
A pack tailored for DosBox which uses a simple menu, currently includes 75 games
You will find that most games have been optimized somehow (fixes, tweaks, patches etc.)

- Doesn't require tinkering/soundsetup/configuring controls
- Works without original game media (cd's)
- Has modern control scheme and 640x480 where possible
* Real DOS should work too but without the menu

>How do i install it?
- Check if you have a .rar compatible program (WinRAR, 7-Zip)
- Open this link: https://mega.nz/folder/CldGAahb#yn_8LkRHraywPgKJMp5pqA and download DOSGAMES.RAR
- Download the latest DosBox: https://www.dosbox.com

DosBox will be done first, so go ahead and install it (default path)
Now go to the DosBox install folder (under Program Files) and doubleclick DOSBox 0.74-3 Options.bat
Scroll down until you reach [autoexec], under there add these lines:

MOUNT E C:\DOSGAMES
E:
DOSGAMES.BAT

Close and save. Now create a folder in your C drive using Explorer (right click->new->folder), name it 'DOSGAMES'
Unpack the contents of DOSGAMES.RAR in the newly created DOSGAMES folder
You should now see 50 folders and 3 separate files in C:\DOSGAMES

Doubleclick the DosBox icon on your desktop and you'll see this menu: https://imgur.com/a/0QXlpGE
Press the letter/number/icon of your preferred game and it will start, have fun!

For more info please see the README.TXT in the mega link

>Ok, so where can i see a list of included games you faggot?
See pic related, or if i manage to fuck that up, see here: https://imgur.com/a/pLbgXP2

Same story, those games are so obscure it's hard to find non-rip versions. It was also a deliberate choice to go for rips to cut down on overall size of the pack (in comparison, exodos only uses full CD versions, but it's a whopping 500 GB, this pack is only 875 mb zipped). The other korean game, Zyclunt, is also pretty obscure. A full version exists but is Windows only.

i'm aware of exodos, but it's a totally different approach. I wanted to keep it small and optimize as many games as possible. His pack is a preservation project for archive.org and contains 7000 games (mostly unknown titles) and uses full-cd versions, making it 500GB big. Also his pack needs additional software to run. With this pack you can get playing in 5 minutes, and it has most of the famous titles. Much easier if you just want to dive into the best games quickly.

Hmm strange, because it works on both of my machines and on a friends' pc too. And afaik gog version is also using dosbox to play magic carpet. After some googling it seems to have something to do with memory management/dos4gw extender. In a few hours when i have time i'll see if i can change the .bat file for Magic Carpet, they say the 'loadfix' cmd should do the trick. It's hard testing for me though, because it works for me.

If you want to try it yourself, go to the carpet.bat file in c:\dosgames\carpet and right-click -> edit. Then type 'loadfix' (without apostrophe, just loadfix) on a new line between :BEGIN and the next line, like this:

:BEGIN
loadfix
CONFIG -set cycles=125000
etc.

Then close and save and try again

I'm thinking where i want to go with this little project, do i leave it as it is? Or do i add more games requested by users here? Maybe a good solution would be to 'fork' it, make a new package for the community here and add more games to it (file size would grow bigger ofcourse).

I'll keep civilization in mind, as with other titles mentioned earlier

>> No.6443137

>>6442803
I think what you're doing is pretty rad. I like the idea of providing a small hand-picked romset to introduce anons to gaming on a certain retro system. Exodos is stupidly huge and is completely overwhelming.

I gotta say though, some of your selections are kind of questionable. For instance, why would you add Keen 3 (a rushed mess, the worst in the series), but not 2 or 6? Why would you include Dissolution of Eternity but not the superior Scourge of Armagon? Why just Ultima VIII, why not throw in VII (and VI)? Especially in the case of Keen its only a few mbs at most so why not include them all? or just replace the Skunny games with them

If your aim with this thing is to be "anon's favorite childhood DOS games" then there's nothing wrong with that, so keep doing what you're doing. But if you want this thing to be a selection of the best DOS games for a relative newcomer then there's some work that needs to be done. If you want, maybe there's a way you have let others send you game files and batch scripts for some of the classic games that you're missing.

>> No.6443337

>>6443137
Not OP, but counter proposal. I'm working on a PCem pre-packaged mid-range DOS setup with a lot of games OP didn't have in his pack, mostly the pre-Quake shareware and major titles. Will have Keen 1-6, Ultima 4-6(so OP can just focus on getting 7 running), Eye of the Beholder series, D&D Goldbox games, Halloween Harry, Jazz Jackrabbit, SimCity(with the four architecture sets), some graphical adventures, and some select edutainment titles. This way OP is free to focus on the more 3D intensive high-end DOS titles.

>> No.6443339

>>6443137
I understand some of your critique. There's a few reasons why some titles aren't included. I guess one being personal bias, eventhough i tried to be as neutral as possible, there will always be some bias when making a selection.

Then there was the filesize issue, 1gb is kind of a barrier when it comes to downloading a single file (last release stands at almost 900mb zipped), since some browsers still have trouble downloading big files (especially through Mega's download caching system).

In the case of for example Commander Keen i think i've been slightly misled. I'm pretty sure i searched for the 'best keen games' in online discussions and i saw 3,4 and 5 pop-up regularly. Since they are quite small indeed i should've just added them for completeness sake (will add them next time).

Ultima VIII was a bit messy at launch because they were forced to rush it, but this one has the patch that fixes the plotholes included.

The hardest about all this is that the DOS catalogue is pretty huge and everyone has a different perception of a good game. It will be challenging to find a balance somewhere, because else i'm simply turning it into a bloated, exodos-like pack.

>> No.6443346

>>6443337
Jazz Jackrabbit i actually added in a previous version, only to find out later it somehow refuses to run through a .bat file. So i couldn't use it in conjuction with the interactive menu. The rest of the proposal sounds neat, could you perhaps make a zip file out of those titles and host them somewhere? Then i don't have to manually scavenge MyAbandonware/GamesNostalgia etc for each of them.

Currently there is a power struggle going on behind the scenes between the degenerate losers who barely maintain mainline DOSBox and the dude attempting to fork into DOSBox-X. It's resulted in a wider disinformation campaign and more specifically retaliatory measures toward anyone so much as *mentioning* the fork on VOGONS (the home of DOSBox). I haven't tested DosBox-X with my pack myself, but another anon here confirmed it works. Using DosBox-X for this pack won't make much of a difference though, all games in this pack run on software mode by default so base DosBox will suffice.

You don't. I can point you to the sources I had so you can try them in DOSbox, but the only way to get files out of the installed HDD image would be to mount blank floppy disk images and transfer the files 1.44MBs at a time.

I mostly used the Total DOS Collection on the internet archive since they had a lot of installers instead of just gamefiles. Though if you are using DOSbox or plan on using it, you'll probably have an easier time with eXoDOS, since that collection is modified to run on DOSbox, in most cases with dosbox.conf files included. What DOS games I couldn't find in TDC I got from the Depot, or individual uploads to the internet archive.

Why would you want to? PCem is more accurate in emulating a DOS environment than DosBox. Hell, even the forks of DosBox are more further along in development than the main branch. There's no reason to use the mainline Dosbox anymore.

Not very familiar with PCem but i did notice the difference between loading times (dosbox ready to go in 1 second, PCem goes through a conventional booting procedure). Guess it's more 'real' though? DosBox seems to boot up with everything already loaded into memory. PCem seems more versatile with many machines from different time periods to emulate. Does PCem offer hardware accel out of the box btw? Or does it depend which OS you're emulating?

What's "modern controls" mean? Can you give a game-by-game breakdown for titles and also indicate if a config file exists to modify them if so desired?

Pretty much all FPS'es in the pack have WASD + mouselook. Even for the games that were released without mouselook, it got added by included sourceports or tweaks (for example heretic, hexen, dark forces, powerslave). Doom and Wolfenstein have no mouselook (Wolfenstein doesn't need it anyway since it has no tall geometry) but do support WASD. Most 2D platformers have standard controls (arrow keys).

>Doom and Wolfenstein have no mouselook
Sorry if that was a bit unclear, i meant to say you can use the mouse for horizontal movement, but no looking up/down (as with originals). Original Wolfenstein had no strafing ability (A+D left n right) but it got added thanks to a small mod

>Does PCem offer hardware accel out of the box btw? Or does it depend which OS you're emulating?
Do you mean hardware accel as in a 3D GPU emulated? Because if so, PCem does allow for VooDoo and VooDoo 2 cards and SLI so you can use more than one. The main differences between PCem and DOSbox is setup and what is being emulated. DOSbox requires a lot less setup, since it's emulating a specially modified version of DOS "well enough". DOSbox frontends tend to use separate configurations for each game, and emulates each game in it's own separate machine. You don't need to install DOS, or know much about how DOS works.

PCem is the BSNES/Higan if x86 emulators. Instead of emulating a DOS environment, you emulate the entire machine. This means you need to make a HDD file, format it, install DOS on it, then whatever else you wanted. Sound drivers, mouse driver, CD-ROM driver, menu programs, COMMAND.COM replacements, etc. You need to manage memory, and know how to deal with config.sys and autoexec.bat if you want to play more memory demanding games. If you want 635K free of the base 640K, then you gotta install QuarterDeck's QEMM or whatever to fuck with DOS enough to get it to accept being loaded mostly in EMS or XMS. You have to go into BIOS and tell it that HDD's are connected, or you won't even make it to the install DOS step. But the end result is you'll have a virtual machine you can treat as a real DOS machine, with far greater accuracy than what DOSbox can do. Installing expansion packs and old DOS patches for games is a lot easier thanks to this.

One good example of accuracy, try playing the CD-ROM version of Ultimate Domain/Genesia under DOSbox, then try it under a PCem machine that meets the system requirements of the game. PCem will run the game without problems. DOSbox will either crash or lockup after about five minutes, if it makes it that far. No mucking with DOSbox settings will make the game work.

Why would you play DOS games on CRT television? VGA screens of the DOS era were crystal clear.

Thanks for the elaborate answer. Sounds nice being able to fiddle with a near 100% accurate DOS build, safe in a virtual environment where mistakes won't do harm. Maybe i'll give PCem a go later.

Thanks, you're welcome. I'm currently not planning to update this in the coming few days (heatwave over here), but i'll definitely consider adding Rayman later.

Best part is, it's emulating the hardware. You can install any version of MS-DOS, DRDOS, FREEDOS, Windows 1.x, 2.x, 3.x, Win9x, CP/M, Linux, or anything else the hardware supports. All you need to do is supply the install disks for the OS, and drivers for the chosen hardware for that OS.

The only downside is, much like BSNES/Higan, PCem requires a lot more processing power than DOSbox. DOSbox runs on toasters, my toaster struggles to run systems over 133MHz under PCem.

I don't own any old OS'es on physical media anymore. And what about DOS? It came on floppies correct? Surely it's possible to 'pirate' an image of DOS, let's say 6.22, and make it work right?

Google winworldpc. They have install disks for many old OS's, and the formats they use are accepted by PCem. They also have a lot of old software for these OS's.

p.s. reminder for everyone who didn't read the readme.txt and are not so familiar with dosbox, these are the three important keycombo's:

ctrl+f9: closes dosbox (if normal exit from a game doesn't work)
ctrl+f11/12: alternates between cycles (changes speed of games, if needed)
alt+enter: toggles between fullscreen or windowed view

I use the shader from this comment with the DosBox of this repo:

>>6451158
Enabling 2x scaling before it gets to the shader does a proper double scanline for low res, just like the good old PC CRTs.

PC-Emu needs much better cross-platform support before it can land the killing blow to DOSBox.

PCem and DOSbox are two different ideas. PCem is for full and accurate emulation of an environment where you can install old OS's. DOSbox is an emulated 95% DOS environment for playing games with as little config and knowledge of DOS as absolutely needed. PCem requires a high end CPU to run the best Win98SE machine it can support, DOSbox runs on crap hardware like phones. Even if PCem was ported everywhere, it wouldn't kill DOSbox since DOSbox is still useful for people who are only looking to emulate a specific DOS game or a few games.
