Couple of minutes, then I just got frustrated and screamed at the game "UP! DOWN! UP! DOWN" while pressing said directions.

I legit just turned off the game, took it out, and played Illusion of Gaia after that. Didn't play s3 again for a while.

Even playing the game blind on my first playthrough, I didn't have trouble with it. I guess I had seen similar mechanics in other games and decided to try pressing up and down in time with the barrel's movements.
