I really like the character arcs and plot in Breath of Fire games. For all their flaws you get a real sense of closure.

We'd just seen the first Mortal Kombat movie and my friends were using the washroom. There was an MK2 machine in the lobby so I put a quarter in and started playing.

Some guy saunters up, puts his own quarter in to play me which kind of annoyed because I wasn't looking to play serious, just goofing off waiting for my buds. He picks Liu Kang, I take Mileena and round 1 I just spammed teleport kicks and rolls and got him to a sliver of health before he hit me with a fireball.

Trying to sound as offended as possible I said "you ruined my flawless!" Second round I played more fair and he got a couple hits in but it was still over pretty fast. He snorted and turned away but his kid brother tugged on his arm and said, "No wait! Look!" And they both stood there and watched as I did Mileena's bone spitting fatality. Him giving me dirty looks and the kid looking in wide eyed glee.

I've always liked Bridgette Wilson, but she was definitely poorly cast in Mortal Kombat. If nothing else, she was too young for Sonya. She was something like twenty when they filmed it, more than a decade younger than Robin Shou and Linden Ashby.

A lot of the "best ever lists" are like that because those truly are the best stories. It isn't like storytelling especially in the earliest retro eras was all that sophisticated.
Anyway let me give this a stab:
Final Fantasy VI, VII, VIII, IX, and Tactics
Tactics Ogre
Legend of Mana
SaGa Frontier 2
Koudelka
The Silver Case
Yu-No
KGB
The Secret of Monkey Island/LeChuck's Revenge
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Chrono Trigger/Radical Dreamers/Chrono Cross
Kojima's Metal Gear Solid, Snatcher, Policenauts

Also Mother1&2 and Dragon Quest V, they have simple plots but are conveyed rather beautifully.
Guilty pleasure pick of mine would be Hellnight

Most of my favorite videogame stories are post-2000, mostly VNs like steins;gate and muv luv. At the time I absolutely loved the story of FFIX since most JRPG tropes were new to me, but I suspect it wouldn't hold up nearly as well if I played it today so I'll just enjoy the memories I have of playing it the first time.

Mother.
I went in not knowing what to expect other than knowing the music was good.
Ended up loving the plot, way more than in Mother 2/Earthbound, which is more like a generic "group of kids save world from evil alien", Mother 1 is way more layered than that, it's ultimately a love story

I'm gonna be honest - a game where you take control of a lowly plumber and destroy an evil giant monster who stole a rich hottie princess just has a good theme to it.

Of course, I'm talking about Mario saving Daisy in Sarasaland. Peach is an ungrateful attention whore who may like spiked lizard dingus. Daisy got saved once and was like, "Thanks! Gonna be appreciative and try to make sure that never happens again."

Peach did nothing, more like it. It makes more sense that *Princess Peach* (there must be a king or queen) is trying to rebel against her parents and elope with King Bowser in a way that doesn't put blame on her. Why would Mario find the wrong castle 8 times in the original game? Who would get the wrong intel and risk fiery death for nothing 8 times in a row? They were obviously running castle to castle, sacrificing one of Peach's Toad servants as a distraction each time, until Bowser and Peach just couldn't run anymore - Bowser is strong enough to survive even extreme physical abuse, so getting his ass kicked, letting Peach go back to the castle and letting everyone assume Peach has the hots for Mario is the best option to maintain their facade and secrecy, until one day, they're able to successfully elope and never get caught. Where the hell did Koopa Kids and Bowser Jr. come from? Why do they all (except maybe for the undeveloped Bowser Jr.) have more human traits and names? In Super Mario 3, when it's NOT Bowser that "kidnaps" her, she's suddenly able to send you letters and good power-ups to actually help you find and save her. Where are those when Bowser takes her? Is Bowser's anti-mail service more powerful than a giant magical amphibian's?

Mario is a classic heroic character who feels a drive to do what's right for the sake of doing what's right. Why else would a layman take up the knight's charge to save the princess of a kingdom that he may not even actually live in? When Mario found himself in Sarasaland and finds their princess, Daisy, is in trouble, he saves her with the same vigor that he saved the pink princess back in the mushroom kingdom. Difference? She got saved and stayed saved.

i guess for me, a fulfilling ending doesnt go with a good story.

Like, the ending of Castlevania 2, the graphic, the melody, the somewhat esoteric use of english, that really felt like a satisfying end.

but story? gawd no.

from my growing up with the NES, I don't know that any NES games in the west really had a story in the sense of a narrative through the game until JRPGs caught on.

>looks at list of nes games by year

Well, I guess Rambo was an early one, followed by metal gear. Ninja Gaiden after that, then faxanadu. Then Clash, maybe those Golgo13 games....

they're interesting games i just listed, but pretty meh to my memory...

Lufia II is probably the first game I played that I felt had a great story, and I still really get invested when I play it. I also really like the story telling in MGS, Silent Hill, FFVII, and FFT.

However, I tend to feel that games with even very simple stories are often underrated. As I see it games are supposed to provide you with things that capture your imagination: setting, characters, themes, art styles, with maybe a few important plot points/twists; but the "story" of a game is mostly what you create in your own imagination based on the outline provided within the game. If a game makes you want to write a fanfic than that's pretty ideal in my opinion, no matter if your talking about Zelda, Dragon Quest, Sonic, Doom, or Mortal Kombat.
