6412558 No.6412558 [Reply] [Original]

This is a totally personal issue, but I find old "pad" style controllers like the ones used throughout the 8- and 16-bit generations to be uncomfortable after long play sessions, and after a while, give me hand cramps, because I'm effectively gripping the pad with my fingers rather than the palms of my hands.

Are there any 3rd party retro controllers that come with dualshock-esque grips? The SN30 Pro+ is the only controller I'm aware of that's like this, and combined with 8bitdo's retro receivers, it and modern controllers are compatible with the NES/SNES/Genesis/Wii&U/etc, but I'm still wondering if there are any other controllers that exist?

Also as a quick aside, as I don't actually own any of the retro receivers - do they support wired USB controllers, or is the USB port on them merely for updating firmware?

>> No.6412570

the micro usb ports on the 8bitdo mega drive reveivers is only there to update the firmware be that bluetooth or rf reveiver

Shit, that's a shame.

I was also about to mention the Brawlergen, as it started to actually sound good unlike the Brawler64;
>Form factor is exactly what I was looking for, has a dual-ended cable for use on the SMS/Genesis AND Saturn, and the analog stick is capable of turning in 8-way inputs, which is good for 3D games that don't support the original Saturn 3D controller
>>>But the control stick isn't actually capable of turning in 360 degree input for 3D controller-compatible Saturn games like NiGHTS or Panzer Dragoon
I fucking hate this monkey's paw of a controller manufacturer, why do they always fuck up and ruin their controllers when it comes to the analog sticks? It shouldn't be this hard...

>> No.6412707

I had the old SN30 Pro (non-plus version) and threw it away because the D-pad was bad, kept missing inputs. Was tempted to get the Pro+ but there's conflicting information about whether the D-pads are the same or improved. The review/shill sites say improved, but users were reporting the same. Anyone here own one and can comment?

>> No.6412713

>>6412707
Not as bad but I've found it does still miss occasionally.

>> No.6412725

>>6412707
I have one and it mostly depends on whether you want to have diagonals next to impossible to input or not. It's definitely not missing diagonals in my case but I found that the d-pad was a little stiff for my taste, so I replaced it and that affected results (now it's registering diagonals more often, let's say, although still far from accidentally). You could grab other set of buttons and contact pads for SNES controllers and use them there and the result would vary essentially. As it is by default I actually miss diagonals unless I press a bit hard. As for the rest of the gamepad it's fucking perfect though. Find it better than the xbone one I have.

>> No.6413260

>>6412725
D Pad is definitely stiff. I am hoping to wear it in because I've only used it for about 6 months now. I have a fairly brand new SNES controller and the D Pad on that is also quite stiff compared to my two childhood controllers that I am used to and are super soft.So I don't know if the Pro+ is stiffer than an original controller but I feel like it is. Great for playing Switch games and emulating on PC.

>> No.6413284

>>6413260
I managed to find some store that sells contact pads in packs of 2 (one stiff, one soft) through eBay because they seem to know how not everyone likes the idea of buying random contact pads to find eventually that they're either too stiff or too soft. The way the SN30 Pro+ is designed inside you can fit the original parts, although it requires a few small cuts (that thankfully don't change how they would feel if put back into the original) to fit properly. I don't know why but despite being very, very similar, the original buttons/d-pad also seem to protrude less/be a bit more loose than the ones that are already on the SN30 Pro+ (using the same contact pads). Weird stuff.

Assuming you're talking about emulation, then legitimately just use a Dualshok 4 + Inputmapper.

It's got the D-pad symmetrical to the buttons for 2d games, and fantastic joysticks for games that need them. Only problem is the battery life.

If you mean for actuall consoles, I've seen people 3D print grips like this one

I like the controller, it's a good all-rounder. D pad isn't perfect, but it's leagues better than any Xbox controller that's out there.

DS3, Wii Classic Controller Pro and the SN30 Pro+ are al pretty good choices. The DS3 I would actually recommend over the DS4 unless you want 2 extra buttons, as I find it a bit more comfortable and the battery life is just much better. As for the 8bitdo SN30 Pro+ it covers pretty much anything. Decent battery, decent layout, you don't need extra software to set it up (except Steam if you want to use gyro) and it works on anything.

oh well, I guess I wait for the DS5 (DualSense) now though and maybe pick that one up eventually.

>> No.6416027

>>6416023
There are other gamepads that can do that as well on PC. For instance, if you pair any 8bitdo gamepad as a Switch controller on PC, while you're gonna lose support with some games that only like xinput (very easily fixable) you gain 2 extra buttons that you can bind to anything that games or emulators let you. So if you don't use turbo or the guide button on an emulator, you can use those to do whatever else.

>> No.6416220

>> No.6416226

>>6416220
Yep, that's precisely it. Home button becomes generic button 13 and turbo button becomes generic button 14, or something like that.

I wish 8bitdo would release a controller that'd be like a mix between their M30 and their Sn30 Pro+. 6 buttons and rolling D-pad, but with the grips, control sticks, and triggers.

Also on an unrelated note, how come whenever a 3P controller comes out that takes inspiration from the GameCube, it's always just basically an improved GC controller? I'd love to see a dualshock/SN30P+ esque controller with the face buttons of the GC, I genuinely find the GC layout far more comfortable than the diamond layout in most cases.

The plastic part behind the D-pad (the one that holds it together behind the case and actually pushes each button) is flimsy and if you mash the d-pad a bit hard it can break. So basically the part that matters most in a fucking Saturn pad.

I'm not that technically well-versed and probably a brainlet but I had a similar problem with a Switch 3rd party controller. first I unplugged and plugged it in all the time until I found out that some controllers just go in a stand-by mode after a few minutes of no use even if plugged in. older controllers definitely worked differently.

bottom line: just try and press your PS home button or whatever along the lines it has and it should work. no need to un- and replug it.

Are you doing the thing where you peck at the buttons with your thumbs' tips rather than resting the middles of the thumbs across the d-pad and the right-side button area? If so, just stop doing that and maybe your grip will relax and become more natural. (You should not do the pecking thing regardless, because it is stupid.)
