This console could have been huge. Why didn't 80% of it's games get ported?

This is pretty much it. You'll notice it's just been Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony for almost 20 years now because they know what they're doing and have the resources for it, for better or worse.

Wasn't it too expensive? The graphics weren't really good either since it had 8 bit architecture.

NEC's North American division had zero clue how to market a video game console, they should have done what Sega did with Kalinske and bring people in from the toy industry that knew how to market to kids and their parents with the money, instead NEC's rebranding wVibeswas obviously a bunch of old, out-of-touch fucks pandering to what they THINK kids want and respond to.

The games we did get in the US weren't as good as what can be got on genesis and snes. It still had good games but still, these are facts. Also the western console should have been the same design imo. Nothing was wrong with it, it looks superior in fact.

PC Engine could have been the next big console and could have been the 4th competitor. I really wish it was, Aero Blasters was the shiz.

I read somewhere that most of the people at NEC America were former Atari employees. No, I don’t have a source for that but it makes sense given what a great job they did.

Pic related Victory Run. A TurboGrafx 16 game about driving your red Cadillac convertible to Paris? Some Boomer was like “Its got a car on the cover, don’t it? Ship it!”

It was slightly cheaper than the Genesis at launch. But the system nickel and dime’d you. You had to buy a TurboTap so you can play games with your little brother. A TurboBooster to hook it up to “the good TV”. And the controller wires were 3 feet long. Plus anyone who had played Shinobi or Sonic the Hedgehog could easily see it was NOT a 16-bit system. There’s a lot of nostalgia for the system now, but at the time it just looked cheap.

From a consumer standpoint yeah, not having a second controller port, not including a second controller packed in, and making RCA composite outputs be a "sold separately" item really made a bunch of moms recoil and go with the Genesis or SNES later by-default.

Probably because of the hentai you’re imagining exists in every game.

The games we got in the US weren't even as good as the games Japan got regularly. It's bizarre how many quality games weren't localized and released in favor of trash like Keith Courage.

>> No.6401127

>>6399338
There was hardly any anime in the US at that time. You had to look for it in specialty/import shops. It was rare, most kids thought it was gay with a few exceptions (Star Blazers, Robotech). So why would NEC release obscure Jap stuff that Americans have never heard of, on a tiny install base?

This. Besides, /vr/ is pretty much /nintendo/ at this point anyway.

>> No.6401412

Exactly why it failed. The pack-in game was precisely obscure Jap stuff based on a shit manga. Bonk's adventure would have sold more consoles, and lets not forget how NEC turned down Mortal Kombat exclusivity.
Complete mismanagement from start to finish.

Much of the Japanese library were anime tie-ins whose appeal would be completely lost on Americans, so there's no point in bringing those over. And later on there were a ton of CD games with heavy amounts of voice acting as that became the console's niche, as the TurboCD didn't do nearly as well stateside as it did in Japan it wouldn't be worth the extensive localization required to bring them over.

>> No.6404703

>>6404681
TurboCD only didn't do as well in North America because NEC already shit the bed with the launch of the core system.

the graphics weren't good because of the small card sizes, the PC Engine and Mega Drive are roughly comparable in power

what matters is the core game, games like Decap Attack (Magical Hat), Mystic Defender (Kujaku Ou), Shatterhand (Super Rescue Solbrain) and many others from the 8-bit and 16-bit eras were anime or tokusatsu tie-ins with a new name and some edited graphics. Keith Courage in Alpha Zones itself was an anime tie-in too in Japan

>> No.6408948

>>6400723
Keith Courage was the worst possible pack-in game they could have chosen. Should have come with Legendary Axe, Alien Crush, or R-TYPE to stand out at the beginning.

>> No.6408976

>PC Engine and Mega Drive are roughly comparable in power
On paper yes, but PC Engine had an 8 bit architecture while the Megadrive is fully 16 bit. Less bottleneck.

>> No.6408985

>>6404905
I'd say the PC-Engine only became as powerful with the SuperGrafx. That added an extra scrolling background layer which brought it up to par with the Mega Drive.

>> No.6409453

>>6408985
It's so weird because NEC clearly intended the Supergrafx to be the answer to the Mega Drive and upcoming Super Famicom, they were really a victim of their own success with the PC Engine CD becoming way more popular then they'd probably initially planned and killing any chance of a "real" 16-bit HU-card successor.
