Didn't Wolfenstein 3D also use SFX2? It was the one of the worst wolfenstein ports of all time though. Playable but not very good framerate and so much censorship all over the place. The inclusion of ammo capacity increasing backpacks and new weapons is pretty good, but the Jaguar and 3DO had that too, better play the Jaguar version.

Other than a collectors piece or a memento from your childhood/youth, there is little to no reason to play this port of Doom. Doom can run on a modern toaster now without any flaws, and also has a decent amount of excellent console ports on modern consoles. This version was inferior to the PC version by far and you only bought it back then because your parents didn't have 2k to drop on a home PC that could play it.

Now if you want to lambast his obsession with expensive CRTs, that may be reasonable, but I have to admit, the motion blur on flat panels is starting to get to me, and it really annoys me how anything not at the panels native resolution looks like shit, so much so that if you put it next to a panel that's 10 years older but native 1080p or even 720p, it looks way better, and even sharper at times.

Fuck yeah, I am playing through it and Doom II RPG right now on my android phone using a Java emulator. It actually works really well, on screen keypad of course but its not bad.

I am really digging both, I was aware of them back in the day but didn't have a phone that would play it or didn't want to spend the 2.99 or whatever it used to cost, it wasn't free I remember that. I love the little further glimpses into the Doom lore/universe it and Wolfenstein RPG give, even its not canon. It is official though and Carmack wrote the engine.

I use my Android phone to play them, using an app called J2ME Loader. Those games are just on a single java file and you just load it in and play. Here is what it looks like on my phone with virtual touchscreen keypad.

Playing it on Android or PC is exactly like using an emulator to run a rom. Not sure about actually buying an old phone and putting it on there, I am sure they keypad would be nice but I can't deal with those tiny shitty screens, J2ME allows you to play in a much bigger screen than originally possible with these games.

It's how I played doom for most of my childhood. I had a family computer but I just had the snes version of doom for some reason.

Ran like ass and the visuals are so fucking bad you can hardly tell what's going on at times, but it's technically pretty impressive. I'm still kind of good at it when I dicked around with it in an emulator a while ago lmao.

It's Brutal Doom (or one of its many variants/derivatives), with a shader that makes all sprites and textures warp and jiggle constantly.

Someone actually just came up with an algorithm in ZScript which lets you warp/deform the actual level geometry in realtime, which you could probably pile onto that mess to make the level constantly twist back and forth, and then the Nausea Machine is complete.
Actually, switch out Brutal Doom for Extreme Weapons Pack and then it's complete.

One of those people were programming prodigy John Carmack, he used this port as a test-bed for Binary Space Partitioning, a rendering concept previously never ever applied to videogames before, and which would be the fundamental reason Doom, and later Quake, could get as good performance as they did out of machines of their times, while many other 3D games without such optimization, or with less efficient optimization, couldn't.
