Topic was about games with great concepts but ruined by being shitty. This game is cool on the surface but then its a shit game so it just didn't matter. Still wouldn't mind seeing a modern actually good version of the idea done.

The cover was one of those 3D holographic things.
The game itself is an averate to mediocre platformer with some horrible difficulty spikes, but I still enjoyed it to an extent, and it does have some comfy atmosphere and music, also some interesting pre-rendered graphics, since it was developed by the same people from Clayfighters (I think some of the claymates characters make cameos in Clayfighters too)

Certainly did I do this when I started buying games for the C64 when I still was buying cassette tapes (like the game in the image, which was a real stinker with only the title music as redeeming factor https://youtu.be/_Nx1SQeMXAM ). But of course halfway through I started consulting magazines and stuff, especially when I finally had money for a floppy drive and later when I owned my Amiga(s).

At the store circa '93 - '94 to buy my first game ever with my own money. I remember having a game in mind of what I wanted(can't remember that game tho) but I saw the cover for Shinobi 3 on those little plastic tabs toys r us had and took a leap of faith. In hindsight I was lucky as hell. So much garbage I could have been stuck with. Gif sorta related.

USA box art was pretty shit at depicting the game you were gonna get, but any way you slice it this art and game kicked serious ass. Best blind bargain bin pick I ever made.

I discovered Ranger X similarly, to me it was just a loose cart in a pawn shop I got on a whim. Easily one of my favorite Genesis games.

I originally got Final Fantasy because the DM in our D&D campaign had this poster on his wall.
