6390897 No.6390897 [Reply] [Original]

this could've been the perfect controller if it had a trackball where the second analog stick should've been. a trackball is much better for looking around than an analog stick.

Is Dreamcast the most well-designed console in terms of hardware specs?

No a thumb/analog is much better. Even better than that depending on the game is a mouse. Even those little thumbstick nubs on certain handhelds such as PSP and 3DS are far superior. In fact I would rather camera control with L and R like its PS1 than a stupid trackball on a controller that has no right being on one. BTW just in case you didn't get it, no Dreamcast controller was garbage.

As a big fan of the dreamcast I gotta say, the d-pad on it sucks major ass, probably the worst of any console I've used where the library has like, a lot of games that don't even really use the analog input. just total shit for playing stuff like KOF

I have the Retro Fighters N64 (not their newer USB one but one for the N64) controller.
Overall I do like it and I use it more than my official N64 controllers (slightly loose sticks) but with some caveats. It definitely does have a cheap feel to it, like the sort of plastic used feels cheap. The low weight of it adds to the cheapy feel. Also the D-pad itself is terrible - but on the N64 that isn't too much of a problem, the D-pad was rarely used even in cases where it could've been (menus, etc). It looks like their Dreamcast controller uses a very similar D-pad which is a shame.
But for what I paid for it, I really do like it. I'll definitely wait for reviews of the specific controller before buying the DC one though.

So extreme. "Very little, if anything?" Only thing missing is another analog and shoulder buttons. How is that "Very little?"

>>6391170
Clearly never even been close to a DC controller. The buttons were nice. Triggers were nice and tight.

But the dumbest thing about this controller was the fuckin VMU. I hated those things. They were ahead of their time but were held back by dinky LCD shit screens. Specialty batteries that died and lost saves when they did.

For one the grips tapper inwards making the wrists hurt, the buttons were sharp, the analog stick slippery and wonky, the d-pad imprecise and a downgrade from the mighty SS. The VMU/puru-puru cages took too much space and the fingers wouldn't be able to rest properly. The 3D Nights Pad was a million times better and the cable didn't come from the bottom.

This seems like the best thread to ask, wtf is up with my Dreamcast if it crashes games after a while and then struggles to even boot them up? It booted my copy of sonic adventure once and then crashed and wouldn’t boot it again, and my SA2 copy crashes a ton on the start screen

This is still one of the best controllers I've ever seen, and I've never even touched one. It solves the non-N64 "neutral d-pad or neutral analog stick?" issue flawlessly by placing them vertically one to another. Why was this design never continued (except arguably on 3DS)?

This happens to me, too: Power Stone randomly stops playing any sound after playing for a while, and Sonic Adventure 1 disc won't play at all, despite still being in perfect working condition. I've never found the solution to either one of these things, and it ONLY affects those two games of mine. I think the DC has some build quality or programming issue.

This controller is absolutely terrible.
-It's too big for the functions it provides
-The start button is fairly difficult to reach
-Has less buttons than a fucking SNES controller
-Hard plastic analog that's also sharp
-Really uncomfortable d-pad, also sharp edges
-Cable in the wrong position

I have liked Retro-bit's most recent official Saturn and Genesis controllers (not the USB ones, but the ones for the console). Those feel great, and even better than my original controls, certainly because all the rubber and plastics aren't 20 years old or more.

I have plenty of Dreamcast controllers, but I'd probably still pick this up.

>> No.6400670

>>6391161
Don't read Sega Retro, they are deluded. That's the z-culling speed.

The console can't output more than 100 MPixel/s/100 Texel/s. Granted, because it's tile-based deferred rendering, it can output those pixels with near 100% efficiency, while the likes of GeForce 256 will probably have like 3x-5x overdraw.

It was a massive downgrade in comparison to the Saturn controller. How the hell do you go from the greatest D-pad in history to the garbage on the Dreamcast? Why remove two face buttons? Like someone else said, despite being a controller for a modern system it actually had less buttons than a SNES controller.

>> No.6400912

I don't know how you're counting but as far as I can tell it's only missing a parallel for Select. In 3D/analog games the d-pad is effectively 4 more buttons, too.

3x-5x in typical scenes of the time, which consisted of static and closed-off BSP's.
But with dedicated hardware culling, there's room for so much more complexity, all entirely dynamic. I feel like this power was untapped.

In the right situation with high complexity the Dreamcast GPU could probably cull 31 levels of overdraw for free, which would make the performance insanely good.

But the problem is that in a scene with high complexity if there are too many triangles overlapping outside of tiles, the GPU will get bottlenecked on the triangle setup cost anyway and can't actually make full use of that culling.

Videologic developed a benchmark for PC called Villagemark which basically presented an ideal situation for TBDR chips, and the fill rate efficiency % of non-TBDR chips was only about 6x worse at worst. Non-TBDR chips with built in z-culling algorithms like the GeForce 3 were only 3x less efficient or something.
