I'm pretty sure I played a ripoff version of Yars Revenge on one of my plug'n'plays, one of them I think used a lightgun.

I think it's one of those 2002 Newgrounds sniper games that were pretty much hidden objects games with a gun

Came here to post this. My favorite Atari 2600 game but it's impossible to understand what to do based on what the game gives you, especially on the advanced modes.

Genesia/Ultimate Domain for DOS. Was a turn-based strategy game about starting a new society while trying to hunt down magic rocks. The game was so brutal to new players, the manual actually had a step by step guide for the first few years of the game to get you started. Good luck not having some of your starting 4 people die off from disease or starvation if you don't follow the guide.

Absolutely mindbendingly fantastic concept game.
Sentinel rendered real 3D landscape with just a few k of memory back in the very early 8-bit days.
The purpose of the game was that you, as a robot, were placed in a procedurally generated landscape of trees, rocks and valleys.
Your robot could not move, but could rotate 360 degrees and absorb any trees or rocks within range. After absorbing enough trees and rocks, you could then materialise your own trees, rocks, or robot duplicates of yourself into a new position in the landscape.
The aim of each level was to ascend to the highest point on the map, however, there is a hostile Sentinel also placed into the landscape, if your robot moves into the line of sight of the Sentinel, it will zap you and drain your energy until you die.
There were 999 levels.

That game was tough. I tried again recently and made a fairly decent town.

I got that one. Years after I bought it by pure accident I managed to pass mission 2 or was it 3. Then I learned save codes barely work.
