The Demon Souls of the PSX?

>> No.6386951

You can draw comparisons to Brights or Deathtrap Dungeon or Blade of Darkness but what's special about Souls games is that every inch of the levels was purposefully designed. Whether you like them or not, that's what's evident and it's just not the case in other second person 3D action dungeon explorers

It was made by Quintis (same devs as Actraiser, Soul Blazer, and terranigma). They didn't just vanish after the Super-Fami! But it was Jp only so it is obscure. It's a big dungeon crawling rpg with real time combat . That's where the comparisons to Demon Souls comes in.

I'm personally fascinated by 90's and 00's attempts to make real time combat games.

I wrote this earlier for someone on /v/ who also was eager to try and was asking for a walkthrough.

I didn't look for one (Walkthrough) as I don't need one. But when I was checking for some gameplay footage to help me decided whether or not I want to try the game, I found this complete playthrough on YouTube. So that should help you with where to go and such but the deeper systems like magic, unlocking combos, upgrading attacks and of course the story (which is not very good) might be a little more tricky to figure out. It also supports the Sony PocketStation with several minigames, one among them let's you craft new blades, another potions and such but that obviously doesn't work in an emulator. Here's the playlist on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjotvIcBrLDl-5ngyyPVaQonIhM7qEJt0

I'll tell you this. In the village which is your base of operation from where you venture out into the dungeons, there are three swords master. They live across the bridge from the village center. Talk to them when you want to upgrade you swords skills. You can switch or level out your base attacks, buy special moves (you can stack up to three and unleash them buy holding the corresponding button for 1, 2 or 3 seconds) and buy combos step-by-step.

Weapons and armor can be switching out at any time though.

Inside the dungeons search for the "key element" shards. They are those blue crystals that function as torches, keys and batteries. Their light energy drains over time but can be recharged near light sources, when fighting (flashes from clashing blades), or when fallen enemies vanish in a spurt of light. Sometimes you'll have to pick them back up after using them in dedicated sockets to unlock other stuff like treasure chests.

Go raid the witches attic ;)
When you talk to certain characters sometimes the map will automatically appear and it shows you your next destination.
This should get you going.

Souls games, as well as most From adventure games, are very much in the style of Japanese CRPGs. E.g., any Falcom game feels like a proto-Souls game of some sort because it IS. Drasle, Xanadu--they're all "soulslike" in retrospect. Because Demon's Souls was very typical for its style in most respects: third person action, freedom of exploration, minimal story, a devastated fantasy-postapoc world etc.

I discovered this entry behind a waterfall. There's an arena mode sort of challenge down there where you fight your way downward through a series of increasingly more difficult combat encounters. There are many types of enemies down there that I haven't even seen out in the wild and it gets pretty tough. The amount of yet undiscovered foes makes me wonder just how far into the game I am at this point. Seems like this game might be longer than I anticipated - I'm not complaining though.

Anon, this is the PS1-N64-SS era. 3D was in its infancy and I really only think that Zelda had good combat for htis era and even then it's a little janky. You just gotta accept it. If you become one with the Jank, you can find fun in plenty of games like Castlevania 64.

>>6389927

So yeah, I think Demon Souls was the first to do this older style of gameplay and setting right in 3D. Brightis and other games would be early attempts to try to mimic this. Before then, the 3D combat game that worked were Devil May Cry or Zelda, and all the other games tried to copy those. So you get Castlevania trying to copy DMC. Even Maximo, which I think is one of the few 3D platformer action games to work and feel like an older game, tried to copy DMC for the sequel.

Well I don't know what you saw on YT but the world map is pretty open (see pic related). I just assaulted an evil magic tower, kicking its owner in the rear for blocking out the sun (one Rasalhague Dickmunch >>6389898), dodging many traps and arrows along the way and in the end, turned back on the sun. When I returned to the village I wanted to spend some of that newly earned gold and XP for new equipment and moves when I looked once more at that familiar waterfall by the lake near the houses (upper left corner >>6386890 ) - I decided to check it out and what do you know, there's this arena hidden behind it. I haven't beaten it yet though.

I'm definitely having fun with it. It is very combat focused however. I am actually super surprised how smooth it plays. I mean it. Gameplay wise it reminds me a lot of Maximo on PS2. I supports the analog functionality of the Dualshock and you have full camera control. I did however map the camera rotation from the shoulder button (or triggers?) to the right analog stick. Now it behaves 100% as you would expect from any modern title, left stick moves the character, right stick moves the camera.

There aren't that many puzzles so far. One of them in particular is not solvable without being able to read Japanese (pic related) BUT I linked that complete playthrough on YouTube earlier so the solution must be in there somewhere right? It's pretty early on in the game.

The writing is TERRIBLE but hey... you probably can't tell. It's dogshit though, honestly.

To add to that, it obviously can't hang with OoT. Come on. You don't get any fun toys or gadgets, no hookshot, no bomb, no instruments, no nothing. "You have have your motherfucking swords and shields, you have your magic spells, now go fuck shit up", is the order of the day.

For its pros, combat is fun, animations are great, I love the art style (like you can't, look how many screenshots I took). The music is nice, pretty upbeat and happy most of the time so far. It introduces new enemies fairly regularly which is a big deal to me. I like that.

Cons are, the draw distance is garbage in the overworld. I thought the game was too easy for the first couple of hours but enemy damage output has gone up but so has mine - the stakes are up. I don't like that when you buy a new shield the model for that doesn't change but for swords it does. Fuck is up with that. Seems lazy. Armor also doesn't change visually only ups your stats but that one I can understand.

Overall it really plays a lot like a less difficult Maximo where sometimes the batteries on your flashlight run out on you. Combat is deeper than Maximo though. A lot more customization with the move set. You can switch them out, level them, get various special attacks and combos. And there's the PocketStation support but I am repeating myself right now.

Difficulty is definitely picking up now. For the first few hours I was breezing through it (was my main complaint really) and the game handed me plenty of healing potions, but I actually ran out of them on my last excursion. They pretty much all but stopped dropping from fallen foes. I should've have stocked up at the herbalist in the village. I saw them slowly dwindle away for quite a while but didn't act on it. I have a healing spell and it heals fully but takes all my MP to cast and recharging takes a while.

Its intriguing at least but its definitely slow paced. All of them. I just don't know is the thing. Logically it looks shit but I know not to judge certain games until you play them yourself.

I'd imagine some translation/emulation community would be a better place for this question but maybe the .STR files? Since STR could be short for string which is a text variable type in many programming languages. Just a guess.

>> No.6394383

STR files are movies, so no.
Either way, I've found a hint as to how text is stored.
Example: 82 60 = A, 82 61 = B.
With this info, I can build a text table, and eventually do a full text dump of the game by building a text dumper (on c# or some shit).
Then proceed to translate it all and inject into the ROM.
I'll get to work on this.

I can do a quick job by having a rough/shortened translation of this, but ideally (and if I give enough shit about it), I should reverse engineer the text writing engine they've implemented to artifically add "80" before each text insertion. The 80s that precede each letter is superfluous anyway. I essentially can double the text by doing this.

Or I can expand the rom and adjust pointers when necessary, but fuck that noise.

Obviously there's a limit to the jank you should accept. But generally it took until the mid 2000's for game devs to really get how to do 3D games right and along the way there was a lot of failed experiments. So if you go into 90's era 3D games and expect the same polish as later games, you'll be disapointed. But you'd be missing out on some great games. Like I've been playing Tenchu and it's fantastic, even though I could complain about the draw distance or camera not being perfect or the combat system being wonky. But it's a great 3D game that makes you feel like an actual ninja, which almost no game ever does! Ninja games are often action games where you plow through thousands of enemies (like Ninja gaiden or Sekiro). Very few games let me stalk my prey and kill them.

Another neat little feature about the dungens that I enjoy is that when you fall intro pits like this it usually doesn't kill you but drops you down to another level. Depending on the layout you might've been there before and will have to work your way back up again as punishement, or it might actually be required to jump down there in order to advance - there's no fall damage in the game. Chasms in the overworld are a different story though. Best stay away from those.

King's Field 4 is cool. It's weirder and more alien the deeper you explore. King's Field before that is just brown, grey, skeletons, man eating plants and ass.
First Armored Core was cool, the rest of the series is less interesting.
Eternal Ring sucked.
Adventures of Cookies and Cream is fun with a friend.
3D Dot Game Heroes was really hyped up and I enjoyed it for an hour before it really set in how uninspired it was.
Stuff like Evergrace, Forever Kingdom, Lost Kingdoms are migraine inducing with the nasty colors and music that sounds like several different tracks played at once.
The only FromSoftware games I still have is Echo Night and Kuon because I find Heian era aesthetics interesting and I like ghost stuff. Echo Night Beyond was stupid though.

There's no reason to dig up a company's whole catalogue just because a few games were great.

I played King's Field for the first time shortly before playing Souls games and I couldn't help but feel a lingering disappointment with the new games. King's Field was probably the most amazing game experience I've had in years at that point. Exploring, making my own paper map, and gradually progressing gave me overall just a really great time. About the structure of the game, I just wanted to say this more clearly once again (I feel like I really only hinted at it before) to save those some frustration who are giving it a go but can't understand Japanese: When you "finish" a dungeon, you have to retrace your steps to make it back out again. Near the entry of every dungeon you will find a totem stone that let's you fast travel back to the village again. Do this every time. I'm pretty far into the game now and thus far there hasn't been a single instance where hanging around in the overworld would've been benificial. Once you're back at the village talk to every character there until one of the converstations automatically brings up the world map and highlights your next destination that will progress the story. I guess if you knew the game well and you had already memorized the order in which to clear the dungeons, you could travel from dungeon to dungeon without returning to the village. I'm not 100% sure on that. However, you wouldn't be able to buy new weapons and armor, spells, moves and potions this way - which you can only do at the village. For more on that please read my earlier two posts here >>6387562 and here >>6387584

One more important thing: the blue crystals. They're very important. Essential to beating the dungeons. Find as many as possible or you won't be able to open certain doors. Therefore, if you carry one and use it in a socket to unlock a door or activate a mechanism, ALWAYS check if you can pick it back up from its socket and still progress. On your way through the dungeons you will encounter treasure chests that can't be opened until the evil presence dwelling in that place has been banished. You open them on your way back to the entry and you will need a blue crystals to unlock each one, losing that crystal in the process. Those chests are your reward for kicking the dungeon boss's ass.

You really can't aggro too many of these guys at once. They'll gang up on you hard. Taking a single hit means getting poisoned and then you run as if through molasses at a snail's pace for a moment. You're essentially stuck. It's all downhill from there because blocking only guards in the direction you're currently facing and you can't hold them off coming in from all directions - sometimes simultaneously. They have pretty good eyes too and come swarming in from farther away than most other enemies.

This latest dungeon, or rather it's a cave system, is pretty different from the ones that came before it. It's pitch black down there. No natural light whatsoever - and where did the happy music go anyway? This is sounding kinda spooky now. Wandering around in the darkness with only being able to see ~4 feet in front of you can be pretty disorienting, especially in the larger irregularly shaped caverns.

So the only light sources are these fluorescent flowers but those few and far between - you have to fight in order to recharge your torchlight. Hey and here's a little quiz for you Brightis edition: What's worse than a cave dwelling werewolf? That's right. A cave dwelling werewolf with a giant meat cleaver and a shield. Man, I miss the sunlight.

Can i get a rundown on this? It's a bit annoying having to check a bunch of websites to find the right patch because author is a special snowflake and won't upload/link it anywhere but on their own website. I was wondering why people do that and if there's some issue that people take with romhacking.

>Is this game all about blocking and attacking? Maybe shooting a spell here and there.

The combat is pretty much about just that, yes. But I think there's some nuance to it. I can do several different combos and end them differently - mix ups. The hits are also delayable and sometimes changes in timing change the move that will come out. I have a combo I can do out of a blocking stance, a dash attack and jumping attack as well. Some combos are just like hit square, circle, square or square, circle, circle while others are command moves that require directions inputs as well.

You are very nimble on your feet too. There is no turning animation at all and you can do a 180° turnaround to block something when standing still in a single frame and change directions while running just as fast. So dodging attacks by moving out of harms way is also a legit tactic and it gives you time to "charge" some of your special moves that you can stack 3 of on a single button (press / hold & release 1 or 2 sec). The swords thrust I do here at 24 seconds I put into the 1 sec hold slot >>6404295 and you can see a little "1" appear for a second at the bottom of the screen.

Being able to block indefinitely though is one of my complaints. Not all attacks are blockable but I see the worth of stamina system implemented in the Souls games compared to this. The enemy in that webm you quoted is a beefier variant of a known beast and it's attacks you with a flurry of blows that will kill you while the tamer versions only have like a 3 or 4 hit variant. So that might make it seem a little boring but you're taken by surprise the first time it happens. Also by the fact that this one now breathes fire.

>> No.6404881

>>6404797

>>6404873 Continued
The combat is at it's best when it mixes different enemy types into a group. Arches hanging back, harrasing you with arrows while you're trying to deal with brawlers. Stuff like that. I tried to aggro as many of them possible sometimes but often they have clearly assigned areas they stay in and won't leave them even if you fight another group next to them. Sometimes you can even cheese them by staying right outside the edge of their combat zone so they won't attack you but you can still hit them.

Finally blade length is kind of important. The game even tells you this and at the weapon smith the length of the blade you're currently looking at is always clearly stated. Longer is indeed better. Sorry it's just true. Deal with it. And you can craft fire, ice and lightning blades. I already said that earlier.

Oh yeah, and one more thing. With the environment being as open as it is most of the time, you can literally run past all the enemies. All of them. I think some players have the tendency to abuse something like this once they find out but not me. Not until at least several hours into the game when I'm backtracking or have gotten myself lost. But it is a possibility.

There's another challenge dungeon in the game! This one is a noble family's crypt and a side quest the villagers kept telling me about. Unlike the other one it's relatively far from the village too and pretty annoying to travel to because of some mazy platfroming sections along the way.

It's a little different from the arena challenge I found earlier inside the village permeter in the way that it presents itself. That one felt more like straight combat training as it lead you from just a single room filled with enemies to the next. This new one loads an entire floor plan filled with enemies you can freely move around in that you then have to clear out to get to the next level. They do have one thing in common though: they're both randomized - it's different each time you drop down there. You know I'm keeping this save state!

Last time I consciously looked it was something +8h but that was quite a while ago. Might be well +11h now. I can answer it precisely when I get to a save point after beating this goddamn dungeon - 30 floors down right now, *whew*. I'm hoping this is the last one. But that hour count will be pure progression time. I have been playing for longer than that because I'm using save states, so I can play some encounters twice to take screenshots & videos.

Sometimes I do it during the 1st time but mostly I want to be able to enjoy it without having to worry about this stuff. Also depends on how difficult the fight is. I take screenshots by clicking the left analog stick. Using save states exposes some of the inner workings of the game as well. Through using them I realized that not only are the floors in this dungeon completely random but also what enemies will spawn within the individual rooms is up to RNG right as you enter the room. Reload the state, walk one step to reenter the room, complete different set of enemies will spawn.

If you look the world map >>6389958 it shows 12 locations. One of them is the village and one is the clan cryp I'm doing right now. But I haven't yet been to all of them. Story wise it seems the final encounter should be coming up now but apparently the villain still has a card up his sleeve - grand schemes. How that will pan out, I can't say. He might get away and I'll have to chase him to another location. This dungeon is definitely a side quest but I wanted to do it before beating the main story. I'm not sure I'll be able to afterwards. My gut instinct was to not do it, because I wanted to see all the cool enemies in their actual dungeon environments first but oh well... better than potentially missing out on content entirely.

Man, I better get something good in return for last 30 floors of straight combat. I'm not content with finding two books, a few magic rings and a lost child. Pic related is one of the 30 floors. The map is rather useful with how it shows a history of your movement pattern.

Every step. Even after you leave the area and a new map was loaded, when you come back that is still there. The line color fades with time though, or rather with steps. It's also zoomable and the scale indicator changes accordingly. You can set waypoints as well which was extremely handy in this latest randomly generated dungeon for marking the exits of each floor since you often come across them before meeting the necessary clearance criteria (which varied).

If you hit the map button a second time, it brings up the world map >>6389958 and that just highlights the section you're currently in and you can highlight the dungeons to see their names. Since they get mentioned in conversations that's handy as well.

I just read some things in a Japanese thread about this aristocrate's crypt and there's some mystery surrounding this place and when best to tackle it. I only skimmed it for now but I think I saw mention of skill bound and hidden items and ring's that make them visible and loot on floor 50 that might mutate a boss fight (???). Maybe that was supposed to be a bug description? I don't know. I'll think about it later, I had enough sword fighting for the day.

Because it's randomized the crypt isn't exactly the prettiest area of the game either. Almost no verticality, just very basic rooms stitched together. I guess it's charmes lie elsewhere (rewards).

So the game does have a quantity vs quality when it comes to sword skills. I'm sure that with some experimenting and research we can find out the most useful ones to get. The "stinger" seems useful.

>> No.6410796

His statement is just not true. You don't even have a single combo when you start out iirc. Just single slashes as you hack away at the enemies. Later enemies have shields and some block A LOT. But they don't always manage to block your entire attack string and you get your second, third hit in which tend to become more powerful, knocking them back or down or at least stunning them out of their attack animation. That can alone can save your life. But hey, maybe if you just keep spamming your basic heavy slash from start to finish that works out too. I don't think that sounds very fun however.

I can't really imagine this working out. There are small enemies that some lower that your knees and hitting those with your basic top-down heavy slash is really annoying because there's no lock on. A horizontal swipe close to the ground helps with that. In this combat heavy crazy shit I find myself now in, I wish I had bought that 360° because I AM GETTING MUGGED sometimes, ugh.

This crypt has no problem dropping you into the middle of a group of four enemies at the start of a floor and they are ready for you. You're getting hit before you even know what you're up against and there are no save points. Since calling up the quick select menu grind time to a halt, I resorted to doing that. It's tricky but if you time it right you'll be suspended still in mid-air but you still have control of the camera so you form a strategy if need be. Other times the room will just be empty.

Off-topic: Does anyone know who made Blade Arts? It is published by Enix (like all Quintet games before) and surprisingly enough I could find some IGN articles about it. They claim that "Nobuteru Yuki, also responsible for character designs in Chrono Cross and Seiken Densetsu 3" worked on it.
And that it should get a NA release.

Absolutely. Try Mednafen. It's very compatible and accurate - ePSX can't hang in that regard. There's not tinkering with settings to get the games working properly. Though it doesn't have a GUI. You can install an aftermarket one if you want to. Like MedGUI Reborn or MedLaunch.

There are also two ports of Mednafen running on RetroArch. That's like a program that has many such ports combined in one place. You download these emulator ports individually from inside the program depending on what system you want to be able to play. The two Mednafen ports are called Beetle PSX and Beetle PSX HW.

There are others of course but these two get recommended the most and for good reason. You can get a lay of the land here: https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/PlayStation_emulators

>When i played during this quarantine the first 3 Resident Evils textures where a mess, same for sound sometimes.

Oh yeah, one more thing that I think many expect functionally from an emulator of the 3D era and are then disappointed to find out it does not support that - Mednafen does not allow you for a higher internal rendering resolution. It's native resolution only. Its RetroArch ports do have that functionality however. or maybe just the HW variant I don't remember. But if you think the screenshots posted in this thread look acceptable then rest easy because that is native rendering resolution - although there's a shader applied to it which changes the look. Screw the challenge crypt. I'm 90% sure it just goes on forever. I called it quits on floor 52 - spent 2h10m down there, that's 2:30 per floor on average and I think I level up 3 times down there since it's all combat all the time. So you get something on floors 10, 20 and then again I believe on floor ~36 you find who you were sent there for. After that you can keep going down and floor 50 will hold a relatively powerful item but not what I was hoping for. I read that this dungeon is tied to obtaining an elemental sword and I saw pictures of what looks like a blade made from ice. Though it may only be possible after a certain point in the story.

Screw the challenge crypt for now. I'm 90% sure it just goes on forever. I called it quits on floor 52 - spent 2h10m down there, that's 2:30 per floor on average and I think I leveled up 3 times. It's non-stop combat with no save points but every 10th-ish floor or so will be a bonus floor containing a lot of items like health potions and such. It's definitely nerve wracking when you get corned by a combination of enemies that you never had to fight in this setup on the outside and you're running low on health.

Not only are there all sorts of enemies down there, it also plays a mix of musical themes from all over the game. Requirements for clearing a level may vary from having to kill all the enemies or a specific enemy to obtaining a certain item. Some floors require a key to clear and these you might even have to carry over multiple floor. But it's programmed in a way that you can't miss the key because picking it up is the criteria to leaving the floor it spawns on.

Though it may only be possible after a certain point in the story and allegedly you don't even get the sword inside the crypt itself. It's all very mysterious.

There is but I'm doubtful the data could used in any way inside the main game when emulating: https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/PocketStation_emulators

I gave the two books I found deep down in the crypt to the nameless witch back in the village and apparently she can read them - tells me they're about ancient forbidden magic. She's studying them now to see if she can make sense of it all. Said to come back later ;)

But granny who told me about the secrets of the land and the stupid crypt in the first place still says I haven't finshed my mission yet. Whether or not she's actually refering to the crypt I don't know. I found the missing boy down there but Granny never said anything about that. She did say the crypt had a powerful illusion spell cast on it to guard it from tomb raiders (looking at you,Lara). But since I wasn't a grave robber it would probably be fine. FUCK YOU OLD HAG! I checked my magic rings again and stuff. Nothing that I can equip seems to fit this job yet.

Oh yeah, I bought this combo. It's the one for 3800 skill points from here >>6397732 Has two variants, short and full. You drop it into any of the 4 or 5 (?) predefined command move slots. I put this one in the "back, forward, attack" slot. It is my second command move. The first one was the low double swing from this video >>6400141 The input for that one is "forward, forward, attack".

This new move, as you can see, has a dash up at the start. That needs to hit for it to come out. It tracks a little but not too much. If the enemy you are attacking dies from one of the slashes, you immediately turn towards the next enemy for the following hit. If they're close enough they get the rest of the business until the combo is done.

It probably wasn't the most useful move to buy but it looks cool. I should've tested it in the arena challenge dungeon inside the village. I realize now that this is its prupose. D'uh. It's inside the village right next to the sword master's housings. But in the end I didn't test it. I just rolled with it.

interesting design choice with the camera controls.. right analog up/down moves camera up/down, but right analog left/right zooms in/out, with L/R being camera left/right
i can only assume this is so you have consistent controls between digital and analog controllers (where L/R for camera left/right is common)

Most important for you at this point is teleporting back to the village by using the totem stone at teh dungeon entrance. In the village talk to everyone until one of the dialogs brings up the map again and shows you where to go. When you obtain one of the four big crystals from one of the bosses go to the witch. You can slot a magic spell into it and the put it in one of your quick equip slots to use during battle.

Yup i´ve seen the mechanics and the basics, that´s how i got my first skill before going into the first dungeon.
I was kind of wondering how could i get my first magic since i though crystals = little ones, not the big chunk that i just got now.

I was kind of lost with the locked by darkness chests until i figured out that you need to kill the boss in order to loot them. It´s interesting how you play with crystals and their possitions, i hope the game exploits this a lot with puzzles.

Notice how the little piggy that tried to creep up from behind before I healed up suddenly wasn't an issue anymore? You can barely see it but he got zapped by the tower at the 24 second mark. Things like this have happened to me multiple times by now with these turrets. They come in different models. If you line them up right the sometimes even destroy each other. If you time it right you can also power through their shots with sword attacks as with most projectiles like arrows. You can deflect them using your blade. Fire though? Hostile flame attacks are among the deadliest in the game. Insane damage!

Cut out the fumbling with the menus part since I didn't have a health potion set up in a quick slot. Used it from the menu instead. That's why you see me healing even though I have the fireball selected.

I can't see any tweets if there are any since his account is set to private but his Twitter bio says he founded a company called Larcx or L'arcx in 2009 and that he's still working in the industry. Last update on the larcx website seems to have been in 2012. Link to another site from there with his name attached to it leads nowhere. I found a short biography though: Born in 1959, graduated from the faculty of literature of Tokyo University with a degree in Japanese literature in 1982, joined Sony Computer Entertainment in 1993, blah blah blah, blah blah blah...

I'm also very certain that if you went out onto the street and asked normal people who weren't heavily into video games "what is the PSX" they wouldn't be able to answer, whereas if you said PS1 they would know.

The main thing is fixing the camera rotation to not be L/R but the right analog stick. The rest is a matter of taste.

One thing though and I don't know if this is emulator weirdness or has to do how the original DualShock worked in analog mode, when I touch the D-pad the characters turns in that direction but doesn't walk. This is kind of actually useful because I can still enter the command moves without moving an inch from the spot. I'm wondering if this is on purpose.

I like the idea of L and R buttons to be the main attack buttons. The Souls controls are focused around the inherant awkwardness of the Dual Shock controller. You can't use the analogs and the main buttons at the same time.

If you talk to the witch back at the village after beating this horned smurf, she tells you that your biggest challenge is yet ahead of you and that she has a gift for you in the attic. If you check her treasure chest has respawned and inside you'll find a phase stone. An item that if you have it equipped raises you form the dead once should your HP reach 0. Dude no! Just stop! They knew what they were making. They're even bigger now. Awesome!

This hadn't actually happened to me before. Numerous anthropods had attached themselves to me like this but it never cause such sever state of poisoning. I don't know if the smaller ones can even do it to you. Usually it paralyses you for a bit (player model and health bar turn yellow) and I always shook them off quickly. Only this time I turned the camera around because I wanted to see that facehugger-like underside (wish I hadn't btw). I had only glimpsed it in on the smaller specimen since I encountered them just once in a cold dark cave in the snow mountains.

I've been poisoned several times in the last hour or so. I hadn't realized how severe it is. I wore a ring that protected me from poison for most of my playthrough. I thought the effects of paralizing venoms would just wear off quicker and I could get back into the fighter quicker instead of taking another dose. The thing is, there are different poisons. Several DO NOT wear off until you take an antidote! Your health drains until you die and quickly. Even after I used the phase stone, that item that brings you back from the dead, I was still poisoned.

There is but it's not easy. You go to this place I marked for you. It's a noble family's crypt. There's a randomized challenge dungeon down there. You can find to books there 10 and 20 levels down. Give them to the witch lady at the village and she'll study them to teach you stronger spells BUT seemingly you have to first finish another dungeon run after you hand her the books. On level 50 of the crypt you can find stronger armor than I have seen anywhere else in the game. Only took me ~2 hours of non-stop combat, bro. IMPORTANT: I am not sure if you can only enter the crypt after a certain point in the story. You can for sure do it after the old lady appears by the save point in the middle of the village center by the save point. I don't know about than that. My guess is you can. >Is there any way to upgrade magic?

There is but it's not easy. You go to this place I marked for you. It's a noble family's crypt. There's a randomized challenge dungeon down there. You can find two books there 10 and 20 levels down. Give them to the witch lady at the village and she'll study them to teach you stronger magic spells. BUT seemingly you have to first finish another dungeon run after you hand her the books. She tells you she needs time to make sense of them and to come back later. On level 50 of the crypt you can find stronger armor than I have seen anywhere else in the game. Only took me ~2 hours of non-stop combat, bro. IMPORTANT: I am not sure if you can only enter the crypt after a certain point in the story. You can for sure do it after the old lady appears by the save point in the middle of the village center. I don't know about earlier than that. My guess is you can. If you're yet strong enough is another question.

You can read all about that stuff here if you want

Why not? Japanese games tend to use a lot of English and Japanese gamers have a passing understanding of English. Engough to read words. Ever watch Game Center CX? They say "Chansu", "hit and run", "continue", "pinch", etc. Loads and loads of english.

Okay, so my main complaint throughout this run so far turns out to be the quick euqip menu. There's nothing wrong with it per se. Actually, I like how it stops time when you bring it up. It can show you cool little character animation moments and lighting effects that way. It looks and sounds nice too, every icon is distinguished visually and sloting them plays a satisfyingly chunky soundeffect like your loading a gun. BUT the controls are all inversed!? All of them. My brain can't get used to it. Even after 13h I mess it up more than I get it right.

Usually you only see a single icon and if you press △, you use that icon. When you hold down △, the icon expands into pic related. The middle one marked by the cursor is ofc the one you had previously selected. So in this picture, how do you get from the fireball to the lightning strike on the right? You press because you want the cursor to move to the right, right? WRONG! So wrong. You press . How to you get to the map icon up there in the middle? You just press up, no? NO! What are you? Stupid? It's . You press . God how fucking stupid is that?

Essentially in this menu you don't control the cursor at all. You control the direction in which the icons are moving. It's like a piece of paper you're slide around under a stationary crosshair or something. You're not the crosshair, you're the icon. You can't think how do I get to this icon but rather I am the icon, how do I get to the crosshair. It's so weird. I can't count the number of times I have messed this up and you can't change it in the options menu.

Usually you only see a single icon and if you press triangle, you use that icon. When you hold down traingle, the icon expands into pic related. The middle one marked by the cursor is ofc the one you had previously selected. So in this picture, how do you get from the fireball to the lightning strike on the right? You press right because you want the cursor to move to the right, right? WRONG! So wrong. You press left. How to you get to the map icon up there in the middle? You just press up, no? NO! What are you? Stupid? It's down. You press down. God, how fucking stupid is that?

You can't think how do I get to this icon but rather I am the icon, how do I get to the crosshair. It also doesn't help that it loops around in a 3x3 configuration because one icon disappearing on the left will simultaneously reappear on the right. That throws you off even more. It's so weird. I can't count the number of times I have messed this up and you can't change any of it in the options menu. Though the game lets you remap the buttons. Commendable.

Another situation I imagine could potentially mess up a playthrough courtesy of the language barrier:

When you are at that point in the story where you're about to assault the magic tower marked in (A) while traveling there you find that you can't reach it directly. Instead you run into your buddy (B) who tells you to go to location (C) where you find the item marked in (D), a dagger that can cut through rock. Upon returning to your friend (B) you use that dagger to destroy a rock formation and finally reach your destination.

Several hours later however inside the game's final dungeon, you might trip and fall or - being the fearless adventurer that you are - even jump down voluntarily one of these hollowed out gargantuan trees that lead all the way down into the vast stronghold's catacombs. Upon doing so you find yourself trapped inside the bark with this Deatharmor (G) who's been very lonely for a long time and has forgotten all his manners. So you remind him... and he understands. But how do you get out? There's still questing to do. Well you guessed it, the only way out is to cut through that rock face (H) to create a hole (I) that leads out into the extensive basement. Time to make your way back up. Don't fall again.

So it appears I didn't beat the REAL final boss yet and holy shit this motherfucker is hard to beat! I don't think I can do it today. You barely even get a chance to hit him, he just hangs back 95% of the time and if you're not potion buffed you do maybe 0.5% damage upon hit. All the while he's is battering you with a barrage of dark magic and each of his talons is about man sized. If you ever make it this far... bring potions, lots of potions! This is probably the final collage you'll get out of me now that we've seen the final boss. I will of course banish this devil back to the underworld but maybe not today.

I hope you had at least a little bit of fun reading this thread that I didn't create - it's sort of my step child but treat it no differently from my own kin. I had a total blast playing this game as it kept surprising me again and again with it's enormous scope (playtime is sitting pretty at ~15h btw), unique atmosphere, beautiful art direction (took over 1k screenshots wtf) and fast paced combat. I hope you'll be able to play it for yourself in the not too distant future - remember we've had an Anon announce in this very thread that they would make Brightis their next fan translation project! So please look forward to and keep tabs on that over at www.dmanufacture.com - site is said to return later this month.

I'll still stick around though as long as the thread's alive. I'm sure I'll have some more thoughts and tidbits on the entire thing. I know now for example that the magic ring I read about in that Japanese thread that let's you see things hidden by illusion magic is indeed in the game - and I'm pretty sure I know where to get it. I do not know where to use it though once I have it. I'm like 90% sure you can keep playing after the main quest is over. There are so many combat moves I haven't bought yet, some of them so expensive that the would've stayed unaffordable even if hadn't bought anything else throught the entire run. Also, it seems I can leave the final dungeon without killing the boss and stock up on potions at the village and then come back.

Later

PS: I've you're one of those playing right now and get stuck, as away

If he's actually collaborating and someone else is doing the translating and he's doing the work putting it into the game then the first bottleneck would obviously be how fast he will get the translation. I couldn't let it end like this. Just beat Zeraword. Really wasn't as difficult as I initially though. There's a pattern you have to go through to be able to hurt him. Once you figure it out and buff your attack strength with cypress seed before the critical strikes it really isn't that bad. Yesterday I only tried for a brief moment and couldn't figure out how to hurt him and then I took a look at that YT playthrough. Holy hell, that person fights it for +30 minutes. I thought to myself "I'll never pull this off, this player brought a hundred health potions." I ended that demon's entire career in less than 5 minutes.

Just did some reading. I was mistaken earlier. I had said something along the lines of there potentially being a ring in the challenge crypt that might make one of the bosses mutate if you acquired it beforehand. There is no such thing in the game.

It was a mistranslation of figure of speech I had neither seen nor heard before. It says that you have a chance of the guard ring dropping down in the crypt and that it trivializes a certain boss fight if you have (and use) it.
