Drawing and junctions would've been so much more interesting if there was a point in casting more than a few spells. Even before I learned how breakable the system was, I realized you could just hack through most things as long as you had bothered to not just let the GFs learn abilities in whatever order they were programmed to.

Oh yeah and the summon animations where you have to mash buttons is also suck. FF7 has really long summon animations too but if youre playing on emu or a modern port you can skip them, with FF8 you're just stuck with them. Also this is the only RPG where I played it with a turbo controller.

I'm sorry but the story and characters are not some gold standard for the time. FF7's plot is better, the side characters feel actually important, FF Tactics has way better writing and is somehow less broken than this game. What is so special about FF8? It's not terrible, it's not that great either.

Not gonna lie, I spent at least a decade playing this game with Squall/Zell/Irvine and just spamming physical attacks. Around 2013 I started using Squall/Rinoa with Quistis or Selphie, depending on whose limit I wanted to use for that run. Casting Cerberus at the start of a fight and "spellweaving" with double/triple is, imo, the best magic system in a jrpg. It's not as efficient as just breaking the game from the start with physical attacks, but I enjoy it.

FF8 was a great game dragged down by its rough edges. It left far too many parts of the game unclear and relied too heavily on minor details and foreshadowing, including two major blink-and-you-miss-it ones such as the classroom computer that tells you that GFs cause memory loss and Adel's broadcast.
