ignoring the downgrade in gameplay, was panic on funkotron any good?

It's decent. There's some fun exploration in getting through the levels and finding secrets. It feels really slow and tedious sometimes though.

>> No.6378329

I wouldn’t say it was a downgrade. I don’t know why people harp on this. They’re two different genres. If anything, I feel like TJ&E1 as a roguelike gets fairly stale without any real combat or progression systems, while 2 has pretty good secrets and oddities for a side scrolling platformer.

I rented toe jam and earl in 1992. It didnt make sense i remember wandering around and never figured out the point.

Mom was out of town we rented total recall and had little Caesars as well.!

at the very least the game could've had a run button that wasn't tied to limited powerups

tj2 is a great game. it is best played as a 2-player co-op. otherwise you won't see all of the jokes and gags.

>downgrade in gameplay

Considering the Gameplay in the first game was already pretty sparse, it was a bad decision that reeks of having been made by some suit at the publisher who just saw the popularity of platformers and thought it would be a waste of 'franchise potential' if they didn't try to jump on that bandwagon.

>> No.6380979

I like it more than the first game. There's a reason Sega forced the devs to make another side-scrolling platformer - shit worked well.

Grew up with 2 but 1 as a kid was really something special. 1 also make for a better coop game than 2 which at the time with my brother was a major factor as the options were to either play together or take turns. Both are great games but 1 was more special at the time due to the larger range of freedom it gives your buddy.

I do respect 2 for making easy mode unwinnable. If you beat easy mode (not even half of the game) it tell you to quit being a pussy and play the full (normal) game instead. Even then the normal game have multiple endings depending if you found all of the secret items or not. Toejam & Earl 2 I felt was one of the few games that didn't insult me just for being a kid at the time and took it players seriously. Of course nowadays accessibility is a thing people like to debate about and I don't want to open that can of worms personally but if you get the best ending of Toejam & Earl 2 then it is only because you mastered everything the game could offer to you. The game respect the time and effort you put in. The only "accessibility option" I can recall is limited powerful items that you gotta find in the first place and unlocking perma super jars which is a pain in the ass in of itself that require mastering a minigame thing that arguably harder than the base game itself if your timing is shit.

While I respect what the sequel tried to be, I can't help but wish we'd have gotten the original intended game instead.
the one that resembled the first game in style and with the whole humans on funkotron story.

Wow it's almost like platformers sold more than roguelikes on console. What could have been added to a T&E roguelike sequel anyhow? The first game really nailed it

>What could have been added to a T&E roguelike sequel anyhow?

I'd be willing to guess they'd have tried adding houses like in the final map shown in >>6383161
And maybe allow you to go inside them and talk to people? they probably would have used the same story of humans holding on to the spacecraft and running amuck on Funkotron. maybe allowing for portals to reach hidden smaller maps containing secrets and all that stuff.

>> No.6386986

The original game had a hot tub with naked girls. You can't make a sequel and NOT include that again.

>> No.6387027

I have a thing for this game because a childhood buddy of mine always brings this up when talking about retro games. It was way too wacky, but until emulators were a thing, I didn't even know there was a Toejam & Earl game before this one.

>> No.6387193

>>6386958
I dig the enthusiasm, but isn't the whole point of PoF centered on rounding up humans in jars because they're all invasive unreasonable pricks? Wouldn't that sour the whole "interacting with them" angle?

More to the point, wasn't combat a last resort in T&E for situations that required it? I can't imagine catching peeps in jars would feel as snappy as the twin stick shooters it would inevitably be compared to. The whole game engine would need an overhaul. Not that I'm entirely opposed to that notion, jus'sayin'.

>> No.6387248

>>6387193

No I mean, a rogue like version of the platform game, so a map with alien houses on it with people like peabody to talk to.
as to the human catching part, I guess the roles would have been turned around. and instead of humans being dangerous you'd have to catch them instead.

Not sure how that would have worked, the first game does show that you can sneak up to Santa so.. maybe they'd have come up with various ways to catch the humans.

Someone should really ask them on Twitter or something, like "what was the original plan?"

Good point. What I learned after playing online is that you have to designate one player as the lead and the other to follow otherwise it falls apart as you said.

To be fair the new game does a good job designating helpful humans (the D&D geeks, Carrot Guy, Opera Singer, and Gandhi) from enemies.

And in the original game you just read this in the manual, people tend to forget how helpful manuals used to be.
aaah sneaking up on Santa was such a defining moment.
