>Not hooking up a Sound Canvas to your machine for DOS games

You're really missing out.

Not just filtering the midi controls to another screen and listening to the orchestra in your mind.

>> No.637581

I'm emulating an MT-32 in Dosbox SVN. That's enough.

MT-32 can't into Metal.

Then use the Sound canvas emulator or VSTi.

Better yet is using fluidsynth with DOSBOX and using decent soundfonts. Some more than others.

Sometimes MT-32 is better than SC-55.

I'm happy with my Gravis Ultrasound + SB Pro 2 setup, too bad MT-32 or Sound Canvas are quite rare in my country.

>> No.637734

Are Gravis Ultrasound cards worth it?
Music is better than OPL, but that's quite pointless if the SC-55 is used anyway.
I'm more interested in PCM playback, is it better than Sound Blasters?

>> No.637751

>>637734
I've got 2 of them for like ~5$ each, so that's worth it for me. About sound quality: yes, I think that they sound much nicer, especially if demo/game mixes it using it's hardware - it has 32 independent mixers.

>> No.637759

it's not like the music from DOS games is particularly important... just soundblaster and let your soundcard handle it!

What happens when the game only supports speaker sound?

Nothing. It uses the speaker.

I would but those seems to be (somewhat?) rare.

But SB and PC speaker is good enough for me

I did get rid of that fucking sticker, but Im lazy to take new pic

Even old Gameboy games sound better hooked up to an external speaker where you can properly hear the bass

>> No.637884

Personally I just can't stand the way the SC-55 sounds. Doesn't help that it's one of the most overused sample sets in history, to the point of being the default for MIDI on PCs these days.

>> No.637916

>>637884
Well that's the point. It was popular, thus composers designed music with that in mind.

>> No.637921

Yes, it's the sticker that's the problem with that image.

>> No.638686

I have a D-110, which is a superset of the MT32, it sounds bretty good with Ultima and stuff.

B-but I love my FM music. ;_;
