Why does everyone remember this song in particular from the game? I mean, don't get me wrong-- it's a great fucking song. It just seems bizarre that the ONLY song that was on the THPS1 demo disc is the one that literally everyone remembers.

Was the song really that good or did everyone just play the same demo disc as me?

Nah that shit was too soft for skateboarding music. Skipped it every chance that I had (or mute the demo disc after the first few weeks of playing it). Other songs in the game deserve more recognition. I blame Activision and Pizza hut for that soft song being approved as the epitome of the THPS 1 OST. Sorry if I hit any feels but I can't with Goldfinger as a band. Their music style is like being Good Charlotte's mature older brother. Pop and punk just don't mix well together.

Cindi Lauper and only Green Day's debut album gets a pass from me at least. But yeah, you definitely get where I'm coming from with the criticism. Lol

I know that people in the /vr sections despise hip-hop, but in skateboarding videos, most of the music was either hip-hop, 80s-mid 90s punk and metal. That's why THPS2 was the best seller of the first four in the series. They listened to us skateboarders' opinions and came with the response.

I love pro skater 4, I've beaten it countless times. 4 is one of the best tony hawk games, but in my eyes 3 is the best tony hawk game. I just like the personality and feel of 3 more than 4. Thps3 is more aesthetically pleasing to my eyes. The secret characters in 3 are cooler and more vast than the secret characters in 4. Although I do like that 4 has Jango fett in it and Mike Vallely. Tony hawk 3 feels more like a pro skater game, while 4 feels like and awkward stage between the pro skater games and underground. I'm pretty sure 3 has more levels too.

Just because it's the first and only to retain the "classic" goals structure from 5th gen doesn't make it a good game. I've spent enough money on THPS3 to know how overrated it is. And I wish that I could have my allowance back, but it is what it is. Wasteland to me is underrated due to underground 2 being the beginning of the Tony Hawk series downhill. It should have gotten more recognition than it did for a non retro game.

Only good thing about THPS 3 is Del. Nothing else.

Worst skateboard deck designs (not many board sponsors were endorsed for the game).

Soundtrack downgrade from THPS 2.

Aside from the PS One and N64 versions, the game physics was too much for the level layouts. As in once your stats was maxed, you're too busy floating all over the place to really accomplish reaching certain gap points. You had to hold on to the down button a lot because you zoom fast past shit. Good thing the levels were larger in THPS 4.

Is there a trick to getting big scores in these games? I used to play 1/2 quite a lot, and while I could keep up with 1 easily the second game's sick scores were way too much. Are you supposed to learn where all the gaps are then work out a line and manual between them or something? The later games felt like they were designed for people who could reliably get those huge scores.

Get your grind and manuel stats up and link together different types of grinds with different kinds of flip tricks and manuels. Maybe mix in some special moves if the character has any good ones, but that's not completely necessary.

No idea, sorry. I remember I managed to get the sick score in the hangar in 2, but I didn't utilise manuals too much and would used grabs more than flip tricks. I'd usually build up speed then do spinning grab tricks over gaps or after wall rides (or just jump a lot on rails and combo different grinds together until I lost momentum). The advice above helps a lot, I'll try it out. I know I suck, but at the time I didn't have access to gameplay of it being played well and the single player challenges hinted at it being all about finding lines with the collectathon aspect of SKATE and other objectives.

>> No.6385302

If you let the game play the "demo play" you'll see a good enough combo line to copy from, I remember the only way I could get gold in Marseille was by mimicking that "demo run"

>> No.6385819

>>6383513
For big score, diagonal flip to diagonal grab as diagonal tricks are more valuable than just pressing left/right/etc. If you have big air you can sneak another flip to grab in the air after your first flip to grab. Always hold your last grab as long as possible, that's where the multiplier will net you the most. Try landing perfectly, that's another bonus. Once you get good at managing balance scales you can link special flips and grinds together, manual to a ramp, and hit a huge trick like I described above. Watch speedruns for the best lines if you can't be bothered to explore the environment yourself (although exploring is half the fun of skateboarding in general so that's your call)

>manual to grind to manual to grind combos are your friend
>mix it up, don't do the same tricks the entire time, do the MGMGMGMG combo over to a halfpipe, then do some grabs and kickflips in the halfpipe, then go back to MGMGMGMG comboing once grabs and kickflips stop bringing in big points
>grab and kickflip specials are good point makers, but grind specials are the best since chaining moves together makes for big points
Getting the high score can be tricky, focus on getting long chains of grinds and manuals that finish off on a ramp grab move or kickflip move if you can. It's ok to spend some time in the pipe doing grab/kickflip spins, but you won't get the huge point multipliers you get with chained moves. As a prime example on the first level, try grinding over the pipe in the center right of where you start, and jumping off the grind into a manual, then making it to the halfpipe on the other side. Do it again on the way back. Then try just doing pipe tricks in the center pipe. See the difference in points for yourself.

>that one location in Skater Heaven with the concrete benches you can literally get million point chains with
>that one part in THPS1's downhill Dam level where you can glitch on the wall and sit there and spin around and do tricks for as long as you like, and you can actually get the points if you manage to land it

In the UK at least the Tony Hawk demos were clearly really popular so the song was drummed into players' heads.
The demo for THPS was used a bunch of times in the official magazine - for issue 49 and, weirdly, issues 78 & 92. 'Weirdly' because THPS2 already had playable demos in issues 59 and 68 so they were put back in just because they'd fill the disc but also because people clearly liked them.
THP2 also had demos in issue 90, 97 and 100, all of which came out after THPS3 which had no demo (not even on the PS2 demo discs).
For the most part the rest of Europe's demo discs followed ours so I'd say it was the same reason for them too.
