Lufia 2 would have been better if weren't for that fucking downer ending. The DS remake gave Maxim and Selan a happy ending, but at the cost of fucking up everything that made Lufia2 be Lufia2.

Lufia 2 is the best snes rpg but Lufia 1 is too damn slow and too much random battles.

In Lufia 2, yes.
I didn't at first, but then I saw my friend had Gades Blade with Octo Strike IP attack.
I restarted and did lots of grinding lol.
In the new game+, I didn't do much grinding because of 4x experience gain.

We both played Lufia at the same time, but he played slower because he already had a job while in uni, I hadn't until I'm graduated.
I had already met Gades the second time by the time I restarted.

beating gades in 3 is easy since you simply need to find a bunch of HiBombs which doesn't take much time
the later optional bosses are a different matter.

Only played & finished Lufia 1 & 2.
Played one of the GBA Lufia (Ruins of Lore or something), but still in early dungeons (first or second).

I just couldn't finish the DS remake. No Capsule Monsters, almost complete removal of puzzles and I was not feeling the art style they gave the characters. I guess the gem grid powerup system was neat but, no, it was too far removed from the source material for me

Grinding in Lufia 2, seriously?? It's not that hard to find out enemy weaknesses, IP-items make it easy to deal a ton of damage and even when your party may not be ideal sometimes like right after the timeskip and when Lexis in your party between Dekar and Artea it shouldn't be hard to figure out how to clear areas and defeat bosses after 1 or 2 tries. The only part that could be walkthrough material are the puzzles and if you don't like those then you should play a different RPG than Lufia 2 anyway.

lufia 1 had some mechanical issues (attacking empty spaces? fuck off with that shit) and was slow, but lufia 2 improved on literally every single aspect. 2's puzzles were phenominal. also 2 gave us the gem of the best line from a final boss ever.

It's pretty much it's own thing with no connection to the previous games.
Dekar is the only connection to the previous games.
There is no descendant of Maxim.
There are no Sinistrals.

There are puzzles, but they're all baby-easy. None of them come close to even mid-game puzzles in 2.
The Ancient Cave is nowhere near as fun as the previous 2 games, you only bring your main character into the cave, no party members. They were trying something with the Ancient Cave where you could link cable with friends and explore it together, maybe interesting but I never used it.
The battle system is nothing special, and it's really slow so hopefully you got an emulator speed up key.

Overall I would say it's mediocre.

There is a patch/hack for Lufia 1 that speeds up gameplay and lowers random battle encounters. I haven't played it yet but I plan to. Hopefully it's as good as it sounds.

>>6368425
What's the storyline for 1? I couldn't get passed this part where you have to build a bridge in a cave because of so many random battles and losing interest. I've beaten Lufia 2 over a dozen times though and I fucking love it. I always get confused with the storyline but

Lufia is one of the sinistrals and takes on a human form to hand out with the humans right up until the final battle and then after Maxim and the girl dies then Lufia 1 starts with Lufia going "hi my name's Lufia". Right?

>> No.6370903

>>6370781
yeah i could see a patch like that being good, the random encounters are pretty annoying. you got the story about right. lufia 1 had the advantage of surprise though when it first came out. unless you noticed one of the statue of the 4 sinistrals was lufia which was a nice touch

Very few jrpgs actually require you to grind. It's just a last resort if you're too retarded to work out how the mechanics and systems work.

I didn't like Lufia 1 that much, I'm guessing it's because I played 2 first but 1 just felt awful to play. Awful encounter rate, 80% of the game was just exploring caves, the fact your party will attempt to hit defeated enemies was the worst though, especially for a game from 1993. It just ticked me off when I played. Also, wasn't there a mechanic where if you wore heavier armour you had an agility penalty or something? So, stronger armor means heavier weight and thus your party would always move last?

I think I just had a bad experience maybe, I remember finding one battle really hard in Lufia 1 and eventually looked up a guide and it said "You should be level 25 by now and should defeat this guy easily" and my part was around 21 or so and I was so confused if I missed something because I did every encounter I faced even if I didn't want to

Still, as weird as it seems I think playing Lufia 2 before 1 was a better choice since seeing all the references to 2 before they were hinted at was cool. Seeing Guy again made me smile andwhen he died I was actually pretty sad since it felt like he was going to join the party again and it'd be like Lufia 2 but instead it felt like losing someone you've known for some time.

>> No.6372587

I'm surprised the ancient cave wasn't ripped off more as far as I know. Probably because of the way mobs on the map screen work, but that should have been ripped off too. If I was an indie hack I'd definitely steal a lot from this game.

>> No.6373104

>>6371783
lufia doesn’t require grinding but the encounter rate is crazy. it definitely would have frustrated me if it wasn’t one of my first jrpgs

>> No.6373124

Forgot which I play a while back but I while I wasn't a fan of it I will admit the level/puzzle design was great. I remember a cave with lava and boxes and it was an optional puzzle. I skipped it thinking I'll get an ability later for it but nope was just an extremely hard puzzle that reward those who were good at puzzles. Got so used to casual AAA games that I honestly forgot what being challenged was like. I think the combat was the only reason I quit playing. Honestly it was so unmemorable that I honestly can't tell you what kind of system it was. Recall fighting a mermaid-like demon or some shit but that is literally all I remember from the combat though I got up to the 3rd dungeon (not counting the tutorial).

I just finished that for the first time the other day. On the whole I liked it, but I'm not a fan of the dungeons all being randomized. It just ended up making them all feel the same, with no opportunity for puzzles or clever design.

Dang man you should have kept going. It gets really good when you get your monster helper. There is one cave with regrowing grass that you have to come back to later on in the game, not sure if that was the puzzle you got stuck at. I honestly needed a guide to beat the puzzles in this game on my first playthrough. Even after that I find myself getting stuck but because I have done it once I don't need to look it up again. It's just one of those things where you either get what the puzzle is about or you're an idiot like me.
