I have spent this and the last month playing the campaigns of this game for the first time ever

ROA was quite straightforward, basic and barebones but still fun

ARM BL felt much better, much more refined and was just overall a lot more enjoyable to play

I'm close to the end of SOD and I'm just not having as much fun as I did with ARM BL, the missions are much more tedious, not as enjoyable and just not as engaging as in ARM BL

Oh and I dont think I even need to mention that certain skills/spells can make or break a map and give you or your enemy a guaranteed win no matter what

We played HotA and we all hated it. If there is some sort of config of the game, then great, but as for now, even the fact such simple things as "press Space to interact with things you are already standing on" have been disabled, which is simply grating to play. I would understand if it didn't work on single PC. But all three had the same problem.
Either way, that wasn't the main issue. The problem was mostly about adding to the game stuff we didn't really want and no clear way to disable it (like in WoG, where everything that isn't basic utility is just squashed). Also didn't have fun with having to figure out some bullshit pirate units and what tier they are, while the map was infested with them to the brim. Then happend the doom hammer and the game was pretty much done.
The only reason we even played it at all was due to the fact we couldn't find any other way to run SoD online, but the experience was... lacking.

I'm playing MM6 again. Trying a theme party based off the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. Leonardo is a knight that will eventually use double swords. Donatello is a druid that will use staff, and started with learning. Rafael uses is an archer that uses double daggers. Michaelangelo is a cleric that uses a mace, since it seem similar to nunchaku.

Basically there is little magic allowed, but wands and scrolls are okay. Wizard eye is okay since it's like their ninja senses. Bows are okay, they are like throwing stars or whatever. It's basically a might team though. I just got to goblinwatch and haven't played in 3-4 years so we'll see how it goes.

So I got through Goblinwatch. I decided on a few new "rules".
No reloading after death, so it's like more roguelike.
No save/loading when bad shit happens. I have to roll with it.
Wands and scrolls can be used by Donatello.
Spells can only be learned if I find the book through exploration.
Spell skills can only be trained if I have leftover points.

So far it's pretty fun. The bank is actually kind of important now since I got wiped and lost 2000g at the start of the game.

Does reputation in MM6 increase only with completing quests? There seems to be a limit for rep you get for donating and not every quest gives it. Does it mean that you can miss a Light Magic Mastery if you spend too much time in resting or traveling around?

>> No.6375763

>>6375754
Reputation only goes to Respectable through donating. Yes it's possible to never hit Saintly, but you have to mess up in multiple places. To get past Respectable you get small amounts for most quests, and a full category for council quests (except Loretta). The traitor quest gives 4-5 categories by itself though, so unless you fuck up there (mainly by doing the unlisted Baa quest inside which loses about 4 categories and not donating before turning the traitor quest in) you will end up with Saintly at that point.

Works fine with vanilla.

If you want to play any of the mods using it:
1) Go to HoMM3 directory
2) Change filename of Heroes3.exe to anything, say, Heroes3backup
3) Change filename of exe of your mod (I assume WoG, since HotA has own lobby) from, say, h3wog.exe to Heroes3.exe
4) Run GameRanger
Doing so will make GameRanger run the modded game instead of the vanilla one. As long as all people in the game use the same mods, things will work perfectly fine.

The implication is that people fail at school or drop out and in Russia, unless you are an university student, disabled or from a small handful of religious denominations, conscription applies. Early game is OP as fuck thanks to cannon (imagine ballista that's good and useful, while also being able to attack fortifications) and relatively good units that are also very cheap. Native terrain is swamp, so go fucking figure what it means for mobility and defense. Some of the heroes are blatantly OP. Tier 2 and 4 grows like crazy, since they have their own horde building and in case of tier 4, it's a decent flying unit. And unlike any of the original factions, it has no obvious weaknesses. Officially it's weak because it's "slow" (top speed is "only" 12, even if not a single unit has speed below 6) and it "only" has lvl 4 mage's guild (so you are missing that single lvl 5 spell, the horror!), but in reality, it has no weakness whatsoever. All in all, it's a faction that's "balanced" only in HotA dev team's claims. Cove is the reason why I ultimately dropped that mod, because it's just ridiculously unbalanced, while pushed hard as "balancing the game". It is not.

>> No.6386543

Oh, and speaking of cannon, there is a hero that specialises with it, making it just fuckking ridiculous, as it deals obscene amount of damage.
Also, the hero classes, Captain and Navigator, are some of the best skill chances and stat growth in the game, with only downside being that you obviously have a high chance for Navigation. WoG is your friend, then. The mod as a whole is a steaming pile of burning dog-shit... but it's adjustable. You can turn off literally everything but that one option you want/need to have in your game and thus enjoying the good parts of it, without even knowing how bad the bad ones are. So you can have things like on-map dwellings stacking units (and defenders) or witch asking you if you want to learn the skill she teaches, without having to bother with tier 8 units or broken new skills.
HotA meanwhile has a hard-on for "our mod is perfect and perfectly balanced", so you either suck it all up, or have to ditch the whole thing.
Don't get me wrong, when comparing the whole package of both mods, HotA is light-years ahead of WoG, both in design and balance. But it's not customisable, where WoG shines with ability to offer you all the utility without shitting up your game, while HotA simply doesn't have such feature.

Yes.
And depending on how you measure their shitness, they end up at opposing ends of the scale. Are you measuring the whole package? Then WoG is far, far worse. Are you measuring utility? I think I have fallen in love at first sight with a HoMM2 map.

Plains of Aekon XL map, 6 factions

Red Necromancer, a few dozen extra stacks of peasants/goblins/rogues nearby
Green Sorceress, starts with a scroll of Resurrect True
Orange Knight, 5 Crusaders in the starting town, 3 archer dwellings, forge, stable nearby
Yellow Barbarian, Spike Shield artifact (+2 to ATT/DEF) and Badge of Courage Game of Thrones themed, your heroes are Drogo and Danny
Purple Warlock, Teleport Scroll (supposedly useful with your Hydra stack)
Blue Wizard, three mystical gardens by the starting town
>(to claim your starting bonus you might have to take a few steps out of your town)

>Everyone has an additional single hero (level three) in the middle area with small stacks of T5 (five-ish) and T4 troops (ten-ish) as well as a minor artifact (usually gives +2 to something). >There is a teleporter nearby that leads both to your own zone as well as your story-opponents' (Knight vs. Barb; Sorc vs. Necro; Wiz vs. Lock)
>Everyone's starting town is a village (that can be made into a castle), but has the first three dwellings built and upgraded and comes with all the special buildings (save the market place) already built.
>Your starting hero there has the exact same troop line-up as your mid-hero.
>Your starting zone is either entirely difficult terrain or the core is your home terrain with the rest being difficult, no roads in either case.

Can't wait to start playing it in earnest. The question is which faction should I pick? Impossible difficulty if that matters.

The only downside is Magic hereos are almost guaranteed to end up with Intelligence (highest chance of skills) and both classes have very high chance to get Navigation. But that's about it. You can unlock tier 5 superb shooter/debuffer on day 2. Or pick any of the broken specialists as your starter and just laugh.

What do we need to do to fix druids in MM6 and MM7? They do great early or outside in MM6 but fall off completely by the time you get to mid-late game, which thinking about it is the exact same problem they have in MM7. They look good on paper, but they don't have the powerful start of a melee class or the scaling of the other casters or MM7 monks. Sprites insteads of models. Changing combat and hero speed when using models makes everything just look ridiculous, and using the default speed is too fucking slow.

Army can move without heroes only if they are within 2000 movement of an owned town. Think of it as they still fall under your dominion, but when theyre further away they resort to being neutral with no ruler. ofc this means a calculatable grid is back.

Spells are rng *but* you can spend double resources when upgrading the guild to pick which spells you want that tier.

Had a thought, what if your standing army had a daily or weekly upkeep cost? The bigger the army, the more you have to keep paying. Feel it would help balance larger maps later in the game. It'd wouldnt be a ridiculous amount.

Lets see if we can merge the wonders of 4's heroes. We'll use the hero mechanics of 5, but when your army is wiped out, your hero is placed on the battlefield like in 4. If you dont retreat or surrender, then they have to fight to their dying breath. Even if you end up winning, your hero is still sent back to the tavern because they lost their army.

I know this is semi-offtopic, but can you guys recommend some good fantasy TBS games that arent HoMM, Age of Wonders, Warlords or Disciples? I love all of these games but after playing them for almost 2 decades I am very hungry for something similar but the genre has been really barren for a long time. I am okay with any production values (AA or indieshit) and any deviations from the templates set by series mentioned above
I would prefer something really similar to Disciples 2 though

Master of Magic is the best TBS game imo, a 4x fantasy game.
You settle cities like in civ, and there's a tactical combat screen like in age of wonders.
Age of Wonders series is often called a spiritual successor to Master of Magic. I played Age of Wonders first and figured MoM would just be outdated, but when I played it several years ago it ended up being one of my favourite games.
AoW1-3 are worth trying out if you've only played one of them.
Which Warlords have you played? 4 sucks. 3 is the best. 2 is good in its own way and 1 is servicable, but mostly interesting if you have people to play with.

Warlords 2 Deluxe is the w2 version you want to play.

It's very hard to balance might heroes and magic heroes in III because there's just no real kits to balance against each other, they're not really competing mechanics. In SoD, artifacts that block enemy spells such as Recanter's Cloak were basically game-breaking since with spells reliably taken out of the equation might was just better, but if you remove spell blocking then mages with their insane MP pools would creep much more efficiently and still have MP for real combat, so they had to nerf Intelligence too. You can't just look at one aspect of the game and go "Hmm they changed this, what the fuck" because of how even small changes affect various aspects of the game.

Google "Tribute to Strategists", it's a manual for intermediate and advanced strategies, explaining all the mechanics of the game in the process. Reading it is pretty much pre-requested to git gud, because figuring some of those things on your own might be tricky, to say the least.

>Play on Impossible
No real point. AI isn't getting better after after Hard (the rook icon) and all Impossible really does is stripping you off from starting resources. Which teaches you nothing, really.

>> No.6389207

>>6389186
The sweet spot of AI behaviour is somewhere between Hard and Expert: Expert is good at managing troops and building shit with decent amount of heroes, but is overly cautious, which significantly slows it down. Hard is great at exploration and somewhat "ballsy" (attack targets that aren't sure win), which adds to its mobility, as it doesn't pussy out from fighting mid-tier stacks blocking its path, BUT it only hires 3 heroes and builds every other day.
Combine good capacities of both of those difficulties and it's perfect. Meanwhile, Impossible is a meme difficulty for owners of 2-inch penis (erect) that need to compensate, while gameplay wise all it does is removing your starting resources and giving AI bonus ones... even if AI doesn't need resources to build, just cash.

Have heroes move in pairs of 2.

If you want to learn your ropes, play just about any of the campaigns. They always cover all the basics nicely and the maps are mid-sized, which is good for learning stuff.
After that, you are unfortunately thrown into random maps, the bigger the better, to have massive, spiralling place to move around and learn by experience. Small maps only work for basic shit.

Also, important stuff
>Familiarise yourself with units and their tiers
You don't need to remember their stats, specials or things like that, but you absolutely must know two things about them: what tier they are and if they are a shooter. This saves you from the "joy" of going against enemy that you have no hopes of winning againts
>Have more heroes
Always, no matter what, have at the very least three heroes: your "main" and two scouts. Have the scouts with minimal army consisting of the fastest unit you can provide them, as this affects their movement points. Look out for heroes with specials that grant you money and/or resources, those are well worth to have and the money ones pay pack within a week, being pure profit after that
>Skim through Tribute to Strategists - HoMM3 specific
You don't have to read it fully (200 pages of strategies and game mechanics is a bit too much), but knowing the basics from it is always helpful, regardless if you are just starting out or playing HoMM3 for more than 20 years.

>> No.6393910

>>6393829
HoMM3 isn't particularly hard or demanding. However, there is a skill plateau on which everyone can get within playing 10-12 matches on random map... and never advance any further, because the more "complex" game mechanics are so obtuse and under-the-hood that you will never figure them out on your own. For example, most people openly ignore various elements that contribute to movement points calculation and/or undervalue Logistics as a skill and it's still an achievement if they just ignore them - usually they don't even know how this shit works, despite playing for decades.
On the flip-side, to have fun when playing hot seat with my old buddies I need to get hammered, or I automatically start to meta-plan and gain unhealthy edge over them by third month, so they are no different to handle than late-game AI. And I'm not even some kind of pro, I'm the perfect middle ground of long time, but also continous player.

It isn't a fast campaign, especially the last map where all the stacks are so big. Then again all of the expansion campaigns are big, even the one with 3 scenerios. It puts each of the 4 of them on the same leaderboard as Roland/Archibald campaigns so the expectation is you end up spending about the same amount of time on each of them, although with Navigation you can speed up water levels.

So basically no, but if you aren't careful you can end up taking 500.
