The ninjato is a modern invention though. There is no proof of such a sword existing prior to the 20th century. Ninjas most likely used a wakizashi or a katana like the samurai.

To be found walking around with a katana when you were not of the samurai class would have been a death sentence in the japanese medieval period. If you were an assassin you would have used concealable weapons like knives or poisons or just improvised weapons like farmers tools and shit so you had plausible deniability.

also, apparently what we know as the "ninja costume" is actually what backstage theatre workers used to wear to blend in (similar to how people who perform with hand puppets wear black). it's reasonable that assassins would choose to wear them to fit in with that specific environment without drawing attention, but it's not an all purpose sneaky suit. above anything else, black clothing is actually quite easy to see during the night. darker blues, browns etc would be much better for camoflage. having a specific set of clothing that says "I am a ninja" is the worst thing you could possibly wear if your goal is to go unnoticed.
